SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new plan is calling for more than 170,000 new homes across the San Diego region over the next decade.The San Diego Association of Governments says the region needs 171,685 housing units by 2029 to meet demand. On Friday, its board approved a plan that divvied up those units across the region's 18 cities and unincorporated county based on a formula of job growth and access to transit. "We are in the midst of a housing crisis. It's time to act. Doing things the same way is not going to give us a different result," said San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer. The debate at the SANDAG meeting lasted about four hours, with some of the county's smaller cities saying the plan gave them an undue burden they could not meet. "It is impossible," said National City councilman Ron Morrison, who is not on the board. "Our urban reserve is the weeds behind the backstop in the little field. There is no place to build."National City's mayor Alejandra Sotello-Solis supported the proposal. Most of the homes, 107,901, will go in the City of San Diego. Chula Vista will be responsible for 11,105; Imperial Beach will add 1,375; Coronado 1,001, and Del Mar 163. Del Mar Deputy Mayor Ellie Haviland voted in favor of the plan, though she said she didn't know where those 163 homes could go. "If we are pushing housing away from transit and away from jobs, then that is not going to work with the regional transportation plan we are trying to build," she said. Del Mar Councilwoman Terry Gaasterland, who opposes the plan but did not have a vote, noted Del Mar added 20 housing units in the past 10 years. The board initially voted down the proposal, but Faulconer then called for a weighted vote based on population - getting the necessary votes to pass.Coronado, Lemon Grove, Imperial Beach, Poway, Escondido, Santee, Solana Beach, Vista, El Cajon. I know I probably lose some business, possibly yours too, because of my choice not to chase him away but I won't. He's not looking for handouts and he tries not to bother anyone. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local truck owner is making an emotional plea for the return of one of his late father's prized possessions.The empty space that greeted Brad Mouw in front of his San Carlos home on Ballinger Avenue hit him with a flood of emotions Thursday morning."Hurt, violated, and angry," said Mouw.His 2008 Dodge Dakota pickup was gone.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhood"My heart was broken. That truck belonged to my dad. He loved his truck. He drove it to work every day," said Mouw, choking back tears.Mouw says the truck is something his dad Marvin held close to his heart, even as he battled dementia.   Marvin Mouw passed away in 2016 in Iowa. His beloved truck was eventually driven to San Diego."I got to see my dad every day.  Pretty much think about my father every day I get into my truck," said Mouw.On Thursday, those precious moments disappeared before his eyes, as he watched his surveillance video. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man wielding a metal chain was shot and killed by a two-year veteran of the San Diego Police Department this week, the department announced Saturday.SDPD said 48-year-old Vaugh Harrison Denham, of San Diego, was shot and killed by Officer Corey Pitts after Denham refused to obey officers' orders to drop a machete he had reportedly used to attack someone Wednesday.Police said they arrived at a violent disturbance call involving a "machete-style" weapon in the 4000 block of Boston Ave. just after 5 p.m. Police found a 57-year-old victim with injuries that suggested he'd been attacked with an "edged weapon."ORIGINAL STORY: Police investigating fatal officer-involved shooting in SouthcrestThe victim was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.At the scene, police tried to contact Denham around the corner from the initial scene. He was uncooperative with officers, police said, and a Taser was deployed after the confrontation escalated.Witness statements indicated Denham approached officers with a metal chain and refused verbal commands to stop by officers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego Fire-Rescue crew went above and beyond the call of duty in Paradise Hills Friday. The firefighters from Station 32 on Briarwood Road recently responded to a medical call involving an elderly woman. While on scene, they found the home had a damaged wheelchair ramp. After the crew left duty, they went back to the home to rebuild the ramp. 377
