TAMPA, Fla. — It's often called the most wonderful time of the year. With Christmas just 10 days away, public health experts are urging families to be cautious around the holiday to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.“If people interpret the vaccine being here as an opportunity to lower their guard, then, unfortunately, we’re going to see more sorrow and death, and those are all preventable,” said USF Health professor Dr. Marissa Levine.Since the Thanksgiving holiday, we’ve recently seen an upward trend in COVID-19 cases in the Tampa Bay area. Dr. Levine points to an increase in hospitalizations, too, though not as steep of an increase as what we saw this summer.“This is happening with Christmas and New Year’s just around the corner, so all bets are off in terms of what happens after that,” said Levine. “That will really depend on what we do between now and the beginning of January.”The CDC says celebrating the holiday virtually or with people you live with poses the lowest risk for spread. It says getting together with family and friends who don’t live with you can increase the chances of getting or spreading COVID-19.If you are having a small gathering, the CDC suggests limiting the number of people, hosting outdoors rather than indoors, and having supplies like extra masks available. If inside, experts recommend opening windows and doors to increase ventilation. “I would really push people to do everything possible to try to keep your distance, and if you can’t, wear your face coverings all the time that you’re not eating,” said Levine.The CDC also says people who have COVID symptoms, are waiting on test results, or are at an increased risk of severe illness should not go to an in-person celebration. If you travel, the CDC says testing does not eliminate all risk, but it can help make travel safer. Still, it says the safest thing to do is to stay home.“I think the real message here is there’s hope. There’s lots of hope ahead. Surveillance video captured a woman red-handed, with her hand in a donation box at a 7 - Eleven in Melvindale, Michigan.However, she wasn’t putting in her two cents.  The images have some people outraged and giving the lady a piece of their minds. The video shows the woman standing at the counter. It appears when the coast was clear, she made her move.According to the video, she grabbed the donation box meant for the Dearborn Animal Shelter and people with Friends For Animals of Metro Detroit.The staff and volunteers help cats and dogs every step of the way. The donations are used for medical care, food, shelter and anything the animals need in order to help them get adopted.Now it’s gone. “There’s about 40 dollars in there coins and bills”, said 7-Eleven employee Michelle Roberson.“Robbing alone is disturbing, but from a charity that only helps people!,"  said David Wayman, who also works at the store. The shelter and the non-profit both need the support, said  Katie Johnson, Director of Operations with Friends of Animals of Metro Detroit.“We are a non-profit, we take in 2,500 animals a year and we rely on the generosity and support of wonderful donors," Johnson said. "We just put an appeal out there to say, whoever took it, please return it because it will really help us save a little furry life." If you would like to help them recoup some of the money that was lost when the donation box was stolen, you can make a donation at www.metrodetroitanimals.org. 1603

The BlackBerry phone, which many of us probably thought was a thing of the past, is officially coming back.OnwardMobility announced on Wednesday that the phone would be manufactured by FIH Mobile, which is a subsidiary of Foxconn Technology.“Enterprise professionals are eager for secure 5G devices that enable productivity, without sacrificing the user experience,” said Peter Franklin, CEO of OnwardMobility in a press release. “BlackBerry smartphones are known for protecting communications, privacy, and data. Students who survived the school shooting in Florida are using their voices to try and spur change. It’s young voices, that haven’t heard before who are speaking up.Seven seniors from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School — Jack Haimowitz, Ronnie Froetschel, Vincent Frettoloso, Matthew Horowitz, Cole Sumner, Cain DeLima and Joey Mondelli — say they hope the tragedy spurs change.“The day that changed everything,” Mondelli said, when asked how he wants people to remember the day of the shooting.“I don’t want them to look at it as a statistic,” Somner said. “I want people to see this as the last one. I want people to look back at that day because that was the end,” Haimowitz said. These are seven faces of survival, family, and ultimately, they hope, change. “If there’s anyone that can change the outcome of situations, it’s going to be Parkland and we will change it,” Frettoloso said. “It’s tough when you’re by yourself so when you’re all together, it kind of get your mind off it,” DeLima said. Tonight, they’re freshly blonde, for their friend and victim, Joaquin Oliver. “His favorite artist was Frank Ocean, when he dropped his album 'Blonde,' it was about the time Joaquin dyed his hair this color,” Haimowitz said. “He was everyone’s friend.”“That kid didn’t know a single thing about lacrosse and he was out there screaming like he’s been playing it for the last 18 years,” Haimowitz said. On Wednesday, they grew up fast. “It’s a race for maturity. No one really told us there was going to be a starting line or a starting gun, they just expected us to go,” Haimowitz said. First, they will grieve. They have 17 funerals to attend. When the time’s right, perpetuate change. “An assault rifle, that’s a weapon made with intent to murder and harm people.
