BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday reaffirmed its resolve to keep its economy on track amid the global financial turmoil.     In a meeting with visiting U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel, Vice Premier Wang Qishan said the financial crisis, triggered by the U.S. credit crunch, had exerted a grave impact on the global financial market. They should work more closely on economy, trade, investment, energy, environment and high-tech.     He also urged the United States to observe the three joint communiques, refrain from anything harmful to bilateral ties and the stability of the Taiwan Straits, so as to ensure the sound and steady progress of bilateral constructive cooperation.     As all nations were becoming more connected, Hagel, a Republican senator from Nebraska, said the stronger cooperation between the United States and China would help ensure world financial and economic stability.

BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao on Thursday urged the Chinese army to carry forward the courageous spirit it had shown in the earthquake relief work earlier this year to better serve the people.     Hu, also the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee general secretary and Central Military Commission chairman, made the remark here while meeting soldiers and officers who were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the disaster relief work.     On Wednesday, China held a ceremony to honor outstanding organizations and individuals for their contributions to the rescue and relief work after a catastrophic earthquake hit the southwestern Sichuan and some neighboring provinces on May 12, leaving more than 87,000 dead or missing.     The People's Liberation Army (PLA) troops and armed police were among the first to provide rescue and relief following the quake. In total, 146,000 troops, armed police, reservists and police were mobilized for the rescue and relief. Chinese President Hu Jintao (1st. TIANJIN, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has urged Tianjin Municipality in north China to step up opening and reform of its Binhai New Area.     Wen made the remark during his inspection tour in the coastal municipality on the sidelines of the 2008 Summer Davos Forum which was held here on Saturday and Sunday. In all, it is 2,270 square km and has a population of 1.4 million.     Lying between China's capital and the Bohai Gulf, the area has been decided by the State Council, or the Cabinet, to be one of the key economic powers in the country.     Taking an intercity high-speed railway shuttle from Beijing, the Premier asked the administrators of the shuttle line to provide a safe, fast and convenient service for people living in the two cities.     After arriving at the Binhai New Area, Premier Wen inspected some industry zones near the port. He was accompanied by Tianjin's Communist Party chief Zhang Gaoli.     Wen attended an opening ceremony for an assembly factory of the Airbus A320 model in the area.     "The Binhai New Area should take the advantages of various economic policies given by the central government and constantly improve its abilities of innovation and international competition," said the premier.     During his visit to the city, Wen also went to local households to convey his greetings of the National Day, which falls on Oct. 1.     When visiting a supermarket in the old community of Tianjin, Premier Wen asked the supermarket to ensure the quality of the products on sale.     He also went to a children's hospital where many parents sent their babies to have medical examinations in lieu of the toxic milk scandal.     The premier urged doctors in the hospital to carefully examine every child and to set parent's hearts to rest.

Todd Bachman died from knife wounds while his wife suffered multiple stab wounds and was in critical but stable condition after an eight-hour surgery.    Police said that the assailant, 47-year-old Tang Yongming from Hangzhou of east China's Zhejiang Province, later killed himself by jumping off a 130-foot high balcony on the Drum Tower.    During the Sunday meeting, the two presidents also exchanged views on other issues, including the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue and the Iran nuclear issue.    They agreed that the two sides should maintain communication and coordination, and make joint efforts to facilitate the proper settlement of these issues.    Both leaders also made a positive evaluation of the progress achieved through the strategic and economic dialogue between the two countries, and agreed to work together to help the dialogue achieve more positive results.
