NEW YORK CITY — From Times Square to Herald Square and along Fifth Avenue, stores across the city are boarding up window displays in preparation for possible chaos surrounding the presidential election.The sight of boarded-up windows has some New Yorkers feeling tense and anxious about the Democratic process.Incidents in the New York area over the weekend served as a preview of potential unrest on Election Day or the days following.Tensions flared between protesters and police in Chelsea on Sunday, resulting in 11 people arrested, the NYPD said. A Black Lives Matter group had gathered waiting for a caravan of President Donald Trump supporters that never showed.Meanwhile, hundreds of vehicles draped with flags and banners in support of Trump snarled traffic around the New York metropolitan area Sunday.According to The Associated Press, a large caravan of Trump supporters traveled through Rockland and Westchester counties and Queens, in some cases stopping traffic without further incident.In addition, videos posted online showed hundreds of vehicles at a standstill around noon in the northbound express lanes of the Garden State Parkway near Lakewood, New Jersey. Police say the incident caused a 5-mile backup.A separate caravan is being investigated by the FBI in San Antonio, Texas after swarming a Joe Biden campaign bus and allegedly trying to run staffers off the road ahead of a rally.Trump, in a Sunday tweet, called the supporters in that caravan "patriots" who "did nothing wrong."The Associated Press reports that more than two million people in New York state have already cast in-person ballots during the state's early voting period.Additionally, over a million New York voters have already returned absentee ballots, election officials said.This story was originally published by Anthony DiLorenzo on WPIX in New York City. 1861

NEW YORK — Businessman and former presidential candidate Andrew Yang has filed papers to enter the already crowded Democratic field in the race for mayor of New York City in 2021. Yang filed papers with the New York City Campaign Finance Board Wednesday to join the race. Yang, a CNN commentator following his run for president, now arguably has the highest national profile of any of the candidates. The former ambassador for global entrepreneurship under President Barack Obama has not officially announced his run. Yang grew up in Westchester County, went to law school at Columbia and began his legal career in New York City. The NYC CFB said that Yang is joining the city’s -to- matching funds program. NEW YORK (AP) — Actor Carol Sutton, a fixture on stages in her native New Orleans, has died from complications from COVID-19. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell announced the death. Sutton was 76. Her roles included the 1989 comedy “Steel Magnolias” and the TV series “Queen Sugar.” After making her acting debut in the late 1960s in Dashiki Project Theatre productions, Sutton appeared in productions such as “The Last Madam,” “Native Tongues” and “A Raisin in the Sun.” Her recent credits included work on the remake of the series “Roots,” “Treme,” “True Detective” and “Lovecraft Country.” 599

New Mexico Democrat Deb Haaland and Kansas Democrat Sharice Davids became the first Native American women elected to Congress this week.Davids identifies as a lesbian, making her the first openly LGBT member of Congress from Kansas. She will enter Congress as a lawyer and a former mixed martial arts fighter.They are not alone in creating history: the first Muslim women, Rashida Tlaib (a Michigan Democrat) and Ilhan Omar (a Minnesota Democrat) were also elected to US Congress. Tlaib is endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America, a burgeoning left-wing group that also counts New York Democratic congressional nominee Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez among its members.Omar, in addition to being one of the first Muslim women in Congress, will also be the first Somali-American member. She came to the US more than two decades ago as a refugee. Tlaib actually campaigned with Omar ahead of the latter's primary race earlier this year.In Colorado, Democratic US Rep. Jared Polis will be the state's next governor, becoming the nation's first openly gay man elected to a governor's mansion.During his gubernatorial bid, Polis has pushed for universal health care, free early childhood education and progressing Colorado to a 100% renewable energy state.This election also saw an age record set: New York Democratic congressional nominee Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez won her general election race easily and became the youngest woman ever in Congress.Having turned 29 last month, Ocasio-Cortez inched out the previous holder of the distinction, New York Democratic Rep.
