Italian restaurant chain Olive Garden is denying that it has made contributions to President Donald Trump's campaign as thousands have called for a boycott of Olive Garden. It all started over the weekend after a now-deleted tweet claimed Olive Garden has contributed to Trump's campaign. After the tweet went viral, thousands on Twitter and Facebook used the hashtag #BoycottOliveGarden to spread the word. On Monday, Olive Garden fired back on its Twitter account. "We don’t know where this information came from, but it is incorrect," Olive Garden tweeted. "Our company does not donate to presidential candidates."According to the Federal Election Commission, it appears the accusations that Olive Garden and its parent company Darden supported Trump were false. Corporations are forbidden in directly contributing to elections, according to FEC guidelines.Previously, Darden operated a Political Action Committee that many top executives contributed to. According to government filings, the Darden Restaurants, Inc. Employees Good Government Fund PAC made significant contributions to a number of Republican and Democrat leaders. In the 2013-14 election cycle, the fund made contributions to both the Democratic and Republican House and Senate election committees. At the end of 2015, Darden announced it was ending the PAC.Although Darden and Olive Garden cannot make contributions directly, many top executives for Darden have made individual political contributions. According to FEC filings, only one of the 19 Darden executives listed on its website made a contribution to a presidential campaign since 2015. Susan Connelly, a Darden Senior VP, contributed ,700 to Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign ((,000 to Hillary Victory Fund, ,700 to Hillary for America)). JCPenney announced it plans on closing 154 locations nationwide this summer, with additional closures expected to be announced in the coming weeks. The company has been hemorrhaging locations in recent years as shifts in consumer habits have led customers away from legacy retailers such as JCPenney. Stores closing due to the COVID-19 have hastened the demise for companies like JCPenney. The affected stores will begin store closing sales on June 12. It will take 10 to 16 weeks to close the 154 stores.The loss of 154 locations will reduce the company’s footprint down from 850 stores nationwide. The 154 locations are spread over 38 states. “While closing stores is always an extremely difficult decision, our store optimization strategy is vital to ensuring we emerge from both Chapter 11 and the COVID-19 pandemic as a stronger retailer with greater financial flexibility to allow us to continue serving our loyal customers for decades to come,” said Jill Soltau, chief executive officer of JCPenney. “I am incredibly grateful to our talented associates for their ongoing dedication and their passion for meeting and exceeding our customers’ expectations during this difficult and uncertain time. In a town on the Puget Sound of Washington, Mario Rivera makes his way down to the secluded beach in his backyard. "We have to walk a little bit to get to it," he says.Rivera walks along the beach to an adult male gray whale decomposing on his property."40 feet long… we named it Gunther," Rivera says, pointing to the rotting whale.Gunther is one of 30 gray whales that have washed up dead on the shores of Washington so far this year. If you include Alaska, Oregon and California, that number jumps to 81 and counting.The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is calling the phenomenon an unusual mortality event, and there's simply not enough storage space for these massive decomposing animals."This whale got stranded about three or four miles down there," Rivera explains.Homeowners in the area weren't too happy about where Gunther landed naturally, so the Marine Mammal Stranding Network had to find somewhere else to designate as his final resting place."My wife and I just looked at each other and said 'Hey, let's take it to our property,'" Rivera says.With permission from their one neighbor, Rivera and his wife were the first to volunteer their property as a place for the whale to decompose.They were the start of a movement as NOAA says 15 more have volunteered since. It's an unexpected response considering the scent of a decomposing whale is far from pleasant."It smells like a rotting whale," Rivera explains.He says the stench comes and goes with the hot temps and wind, but he's been covering it in lime to help, and he says the pungent smell will likely go away after a month. What's more important, is that Gunther has given Rivera and scientists an opportunity to study why so many whales may be dying."When we opened him up, we found nothing but eel grass. And eel grass isn't part of their diet. This whale was what we call desperation feeding," Rivera says.John Calambokidis has been studying whales along the West Coast for 35 years. He's a research biologist with Cascadia Research. Calambokidis says the malnourished state of Gunther was very similar to what they've been seeing with other dying whales."Most of these whales have shown up very thin and emaciated--very little oil or fat in their blubber layer, which suggests they didn't get enough to feed last year," Calambokidis says.Gray whales spend the summers feeding in the Arctic and then migrate south near Mexico for the winter. All the whale strandings show some aren't making it through their normal seasonal fasting as they migrate back north along the West Coast in the spring. Calambokidis says it still isn't 100 percent clear why so many whales are dying, but he thinks its at least due in part to food supply not being able to meet the demand of the West Coast's growing whale population."Most recent estimate was 27,000 gray whales in this population," Calambokidis says.Research biologists have seen this trend once before back in 1999 and 2000. The theories were the same, and gray whales have made a comeback in the following decades. But now, scientists are questioning whether warming waters is also playing a role."We're not yet alarmed about this in the sense that we've seen something like this before and they've recovered from it. But we really do want to understand what's going on," Calambokidis says. "Particularly since there have been such dramatic changes in the arctic ecosystem. Making sure there isn't also a climate change element to this that could suggest a longer-term pattern we need to be more concerned about."According to Calambokidis, waters are warmer, and ice cover has dramatically been reduced, changing the dynamics of the ecosystem and how whales reach their prey.Part of their job as research biologists is to learn if there's more to the story. Calambokidis says they study each carcass searching the tissues for disease or contaminants. But for now, the main issue is dealing with the abundance of dead whales. INDIANAPOLIS — Six people are suing Conagra, the company that manufactures Pam and other canned cooking sprays, after being severely burned and injured when a can of the cooking spray exploded or caught fire, they say.The law firm representing the six individuals, Koskoff Koskoff and Bieder, issued a press release Tuesday saying their lawsuit "aims to highlight the dangers of certain household cooking spray cans and Conagra's refusal to recall them."Raveen Sugantheraj, a medical student in Indianapolis, was burned back in March. His girlfriend, Rachel McCree, shared his story because Sugantheraj was still in the hospital having multiple surgeries at the time. McCree said Sugantheraj had been cooking when a can of Pam cooking spray sitting near the stove top exploded, causing a fire. Once the couple put out the fire, they noticed Sugantheraj had been severely burned and he was taken to the hospital where he had to undergo multiple skin grafts and other surgeries from the burns on the upper part of his body. "He's a full-time med student. He's educated. He's very smart ... he had no idea — I had no idea," McRee said at the time. "We know to keep cooking oil away, especially not on the stove top, but we had placed it far enough to where we thought it was OK."The law firm says their independent testing, over the course of several years, found a defect in the bottom of Conagra cooking spray cans that made them an extreme safety hazard. They claim Conagra has discontinued production of the new can design, but has refused to issue a recall for the already-shipped product. “It is beyond irresponsible that, to increase profits, Conagra Brands made and sold cans of household cooking spray that are susceptible to explosion, choosing not to use the safer designs as it had for the last sixty years, and failed to warn consumers about the very serious risks,” said J. Craig Smith of Koskoff Koskoff & Bieder, the law firm that represents the victims in each of the cases. “Perhaps more alarming is the fact that, to this day, Conagra apparently refuses to institute a nationwide recall to ensure that the defective cans sitting on store shelves right now are removed before someone else suffers permanent injury from an explosion. Each day that these cans remain on store shelves, Conagra’s negligence puts consumers in danger.”The six different lawsuits against Conagra Brands Inc, were filed in Cook County Superior Court in Chicago, home of Conagra's headquarters. The lawsuits claim the company's product is dangerous and caused injuries to people in home kitchens and at least one restaurant.
