ABUJA, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- China and Nigeria celebrated the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations on Thursday evening in Nigeria's capital city Abuja.More than 600 Chinese and Nigerian guests, including Nigeria's former Head of State Yakubu Gowon, attended the gala event. On Feb. 10, 1971, the two most populous developing countries in Asia and Africa set up their diplomatic relations, said Deng Boqing, the Chinese ambassador to Nigeria. The frequent high level visits from both sides built up the mutual trust, the exchanges and cooperation in the fields of economy, culture, science, education and health, he said. The bilateral trade volume in 2010 is expected to break the record 7.5 billion U.S. dollars in 2008. The total Chinese investment in Nigeria has been nearly 8 billion dollars by the end of 2010, he said.Deng also gave tribute to the indispensable efforts made by the overseas Chinese and Chinese companies in Nigeria.Yakubu Gowon, former head of state in the 1970s, told Xinhua that he was delighted to witness the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Nigeria in 1971 during his term. He visited China and met the late Chinese leader Mao Zedong in 1974.Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan sent his representative to the celebration of the 40th anniversary of bilateral ties, pledging the two countries would work closely in the future.
NEW DELHI, March 5 (Xinhua) -- Doctors in India have claimed to have successfully performed a rare robotic heart surgery on a 23- year-old person at a hospital in the southern Indian city of Chennai, local media reported Saturday.Dr. R. Ravi Kumar, the Director of the Institute of Cardiovascular Disease at the Chettinad Health City, said the robotically assisted procedure involved replacing both the mitral and the aortal valve simultaneously. The surgery carried out on D. Vijayakanth, an auto driver from Vellore, was done by a three armed robot, took four hours and cost 225,000 rupees (4,500 U.S. dollars)."The best part about using a robot in cardiac surgery is that the patient's heart need not be opened and the surgery can be done using a small 4cm incision. This is not possible with normal surgeries without a robot," Dr Ravi Kumar was quoted by local daily The Times of India as saying.Robotic surgery, which is fairly new in the country, can be used for a gamut of medical procedures, said Dr Ravi Kumar."It requires a lot of precision and intense training because though the robotic hands do the surgery, it has to be controlled by a trained surgeon. One of the biggest disadvantages is the lack of sensory perception which is there when the surgeon actually does the surgery himself," he said.
BEIJING, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has demanded the comprehensive enforcement of the country's food safety laws, urging checks to be tightened against unsafe food products.China should enhance efforts to ensure food safety, which is crucial for protecting human lives and improving people's living standards, Li said while addressing a meeting on food safety on Friday, according to an official statement issued Saturday. Also, emphasis should be directed to both special campaigns, which are launched to check against unsafe food, as well as daily supervision of food manufacturers, he said. The meeting also heard reports on food safety delivered by officials from health and agriculture ministries, the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, and the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.Participants at the meeting agreed that China should improve its system to monitor and assess food safety risks and enhance emergency response capabilities in this regard. They also called for improvement of food safety-related laws and regulations, as well as measures to target those core factors that affect the safety of food products. At the meeting, local government departments were asked to closely cooperate and improve the system to ensure food safety.Further, the participants agreed that authorities should publicize accurate information about food safety in a timely manner, and do more to forge a social atmosphere favorable for ensuring food safety.
BEIJING, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's central government on Wednesday called on local authorities to step up efforts to ensure a stable market supply of daily necessities, such as food and clothing, as freezing weather continues to plague south and southwest China. The Ministry of Commerce required local government departments to guide companies to increase supplies such as rice, edible oil, meat and vegetables. It also required local departments to closely watch market changes and release reserves of commodities when necessary, said a statement on its website. The statement said the government of southwest China's Chongqing Municipality has urged local supermarkets to maintain the prices of 10 types of vegetables that are affordable to the public, while authorities in the rain and snow-battered Guizhou and Hunan provinces guided logistics companies and wholesales markets to take measures to insure supplies. The Ministry of Agriculture on Wednesday also ordered local departments to expand areas for growing vegetables when conditions allow, as agricultural experts were also sent to fields to help farmers save their crops. The country's meteorological authority forecast Wednesday that over the next three days, heavy snow and icy rain would continue in provinces and municipalities including Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, and Chongqing.
BEIJING, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council, or Cabinet, Friday published the newly adopted regulations on expropriation of houses on state-owned land and compensation. The new rules, which took effect upon the issuing, took the place of the 2001 regulations on administration of the housing demolition and relocation in cities. The new rules specifically stated that neither violence or coercion may be used to force homeowners to leave. Nor could measures, such as illegally cutting water and power supplies, be used in relocation work. The new rules also banned land developers' involvement in the demolition and relocation procedures, as well as demolition by local governments without court approval. Moreover, the new regulations ensured fair prices for homeowners by providing that compensation for expropriated homes should be no lower than the sum of the market price of similar properties at the time of an expropriation. The regulations were first reviewed at a State Council executive meeting in December 2007. Later, public opinion was twice sought in 2010 after revisions had been made to the regulations. An executive meeting of the State Council Wednesday gave in-principle approval to the regulations.
