SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced Thursday that several more shoreline park areas and piers and boardwalks would be reopened this week amid the COVID-19 pandemic.Mayor Faulconer says the following will be reopened in June and July:June 8: East and West Mission Bay Parks will be open for park and water use, including parking lots at 100% capacity.June 8: Fiesta Island opens to pedestrians, dogs, and cyclists only.June 9: All piers and boardwalks within city limits reopen.June 12: Balboa Park Central Mesa reopens and all Balboa Park parking lots open at 100% capacity.July 6: Fiesta Island opens to vehicles.Gatherings are still prohibited and social distancing is still required at beaches and parks. Mayor Faulconer said active sports at the beach are still banned as well."We're continuing to make meaningful progress as we continue to reopen across San Diego," Faulconer said.This week, county beaches allowed visitors to sit, sunbathe, and relax on the sand, in addition to passive activities like walking and running.Ocean activities, like swimming, surfing, kayaking, and paddle-boarding continue to be allowed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police have identified the man killed in an officer-involved shooting this week in Mountain View.Police said 39-year-old Jose Alfredo Castro-Gutierrez was shot and killed after officers responded to the 300 block of South Pardee Street just before 5 a.m. on Monday over reports of a violent disturbance involving a weapon.According to SDPD, Castro-Gutierrez was staying at a home as a guest when the residents were woken up by him. He had reportedly been acting paranoid and ripped a metal curtain rod from a window and began breaking windows and other objects in the home.RELATED: San Diego Police shoot, kill vandalism suspect in Mountain ViewWhen police arrived, they saw Castro-Gutierrez in the front window and could hear him breaking objects and yelling inside.SDPD says officers gave directions in English and Spanish to try and communicate with Castro-Gutierrez but got no response. Eventually, Castro-Gutierrez crawled out of a broken window and made his way to the front of the property where officers were.Police said Castro-Gutierrez began to run at full speed toward them with the metal pole, prompting three officers to fire their weapons at him: One officer fired a bean bag round, another officer fired a Taser, and a third officer fired several rounds from his service pistol, SDPD says.Castro-Gutierrez was hit by at least one round and fell to the ground. Officers started first aid at the scene, but Castro-Gutierrez was pronounced dead at the hospital.The officer who fired his service pistol was identified as Isai Castillo, a two-year veteran of SDPD assigned to Southeastern Division.SDPD's homicide unit is currently investigating the shooting, after which the San Diego County District Attorney's Office will review the case to determine if the officers bear any criminal liability. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County reported 625 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, the region's second-highest daily increase of cases reported by officials.San Diego County's new cases reported a 6% positive rate out of 10,290 tests. Of the county's cases, 2,180 (9.4%) have needed hospitalization. Health officials add that 2.5% of all cases and 26% of hospitalized cases have been moved to the ICU.An additional six deaths due to COVID-19 were also reported, the county said. The deaths occurred between July 8 and July 16, and included four women and two men whose ages ranged from 60 to mid-90s. All had existing chronic conditions, the county said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diegans should get their flu shots before the flu season typically starts, county health officials said Wednesday.Most flu cases are reported between the end of October and April or May, according to the County Health and Human Services Agency.It takes about two weeks after receiving the flu shot to develop immunity to the virus, said officials.“People should get vaccinated before the worst of the flu season gets here,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “The vaccine is safe and effective and is available across the region.”342 people in San Diego County died of the virus during the last flu season, officials said. County officials say it’s important to be prepared because topsoil, mud, plant material, and debris can clog culverts and storm drains and damage roadways.
