OWENTON, Ky. -- A McDonald's worker who handled food while infected with hepatitis A might have spread the illness to customers, according to a news release from the Three Rivers District Health Department in Kentucky. The announcement arrived less than a week after a similar one from Clermont County, where a Taco Bell worker was diagnosed with the virus."While it is relatively uncommon for restaurant patrons to become infected with hepatitis A due to an infected food handler, anyone who consumed food or drink at the Owenton McDonald's (between Aug. 16-27) is advised to get a hepatitis A vaccination," district health officials wrote in a news release. The McDonald's in question is located at 506 South Main Street in Owenton, Kentucky.Officials added the McDonald's management was cooperating with their investigation, employees had been told to receive a vaccination and the entire staff reviewed standard hygiene practices to prevent transmission.Kentucky is in the midst of a statewide outbreak of hepatitis A, a liver infection that can remain asymptomatic for many weeks before causing fatigue, nausea, joint paint and low-grade fevers. People with existing health problems, especially older adults, can sometimes experience sudden liver shutdowns, according to Mayo Clinic. Hepatitis A is normally transmitted through small particles of feces that remain on an infected person's hands after using the restroom. If they prepare food or drink afterward, they can potentially infect large numbers of unsuspecting people. Effective hand-washing and vaccination reduce the risk of the infection spreading. 1632

PHOENIX - Believe it or not, a shelter pup was returned to the Arizona Animal Welfare League in Phoenix because he was too good.In a Monday Facebook post, AAWL said 1-year-old Binx was adopted and returned within 48 hours with notes saying he's potty-trained, good with kids and fun to play with. Turns out, Binx's temporary new family wanted more of a challenge from their adoptive pooch and returned him to AAWL.According to the shelter's Facebook page, Binx "can't get anything done at the shelter because everyone is petting me, telling me what a good boy I am, and taking me for walks!"Binx's profile on the AAWL?website says an active family would be ideal for the large-breed dog, who loves to run, hike, and do "anything that involves being outside."Anyone who wants more information on Binx can check him out here. 836

Parents are approaching back-to-school as best they can, whether their kids are learning at home or face-to-face in the classroom. Many are also relying on after-school programs to help keep their kids mentally and academically successful."The reality is that because most of our schools are virtual or hybrid, after school is all the time and so our programs have been on overdrive to try and meet the need of all of our working parents. And whether you’re working from home or you have to go into work, it’s really hard to do that when you have kids that are home," said Jodi Grant, the Executive Director of the Afterschool Alliance.Grant says after-school programs during the pandemic are essential. The national organization works with 27,000 programs across the country that are not only providing meals to children, but also virtual classroom spaces and childcare for working parents."I think we need to stop and put the kids first. And there’s a lot of creative ways that our kids can be learning, and they don't need to be isolated. After-school programs have jumped to do that and jumped through hoops to do that," said Grant.YMCA of the USA has slowly been reopening some programs since the spring, including a number of day camps this summer. As the fall approached, organizers realized they needed to expand after-school programs."We saw the need in the community to pivot to an all-day childcare model, where the children can now come to the Y, they’ll be separated into different pods and staff as they go through their virtual learning programs via their schools," said Ryan O'Malley with YMCA of the USA.O'Malley says there are more than 370 YMCA locations providing full-day childcare and virtual learning classrooms in 45 states across the country. Boys and Girls Clubs of America has 4,700 locations in the U.S. and right now more than 83% of them are providing some level of service."I think it's critical for both the physical safety but also the emotional safety for those young people and being able to provide those services," said Misty Miller, Senior Vice President for Organizational Development, Field Operations for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.Miller says a majority of their Boys and Girls Clubs have opened in some capacity."With many of our schools being virtual, we have about 1,300 sites that are opening for the full day to be these virtual learning hubs or safety zones, if you will, which is a different place for us. And it's a very expensive place for us. Clubs are increasing their operating costs," said Miller. Boys and Girls Clubs reports it’s spending at least three times as much as it normally does on after-school care to accommodate safety protocols for COVID-19. YMCA of the USA says they've lost more than billion in revenue since the spring and that after-school programs are suffering financially right now."Very much so. I think it's a combination of things. One is that the programs that are operating its much more expensive to do. In many cases they have to rent additional space, they have to hire more staff, it's longer hours. We are pushing very hard in the next COVID bill to get some federal resources into after-school [programs] so that we can do this one-time short-term influx of money," said O'Malley. Some after-school programs are even helping families cover the costs of childcare, since many parents are finding it hard economically right now to pay the fees."We are looking to the communities for that support but we’re also looking to the federal government for that support. Ys are facing financial hardship that only the federal government can provide, so we’re really asking Congress to give back and look for that relief for charities that are so important to keep non-profits open like the Y open," said O'Malley. 3810

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Florida — A heroic act caught on video.A baby nearly choked to death at a Florida mall but quick-thinking officers who just happened to be nearby stepped up to save her life. The incident unfolded nearly two weeks ago. One-year old Lucia Graham was rescued by two Palm Beach Gardens, Florida officers who happened to be eating lunch nearby when she started choking."They were there for a reason and that reason was to save her life," said Ana Jaramillo de Graham, Lucia's mother. In the surveillance video, Jaramillo de Graham can be seen with her two kids, including Lucia's toddler brother, enjoying Kid's Day at Palm Beach Gardens Mall."We got hungry, and like we always do, we went to Chick-fil-A," she said.Lucia then started choking on a chicken nugget."She looked at me with her eyes wide open. She tried to do something with her mouth — she couldn't cough, couldn't do anything," said Jaramillo de Graham. The mother tried a technique taught to her by her pediatrician, which involved sharp blows to the baby's back to dislodge the object. She said in a panic she must not have been performing the technique hard enough, so she started screaming for help.Officer Robert Ayala and Officer Rafael Guadelupe rushed over right away."Officer Ayala stepped in, I handed her to him. He sat down and so quickly started performing what he needed to do to make sure she was OK. And I sat on the floor panicked. I just wanted to make sure she was OK," she said. Finally, the chicken was removed and Lucia was able to breathe again."They're our heroes. They are the best, best angels we could've had that day at the mall," Jaramillo de Graham said.Lucia was immediately checked by EMT staff at the mall. Despite the close call, baby Lucia is 100 percent healthy."They knew exactly what to do to save her life," Lucia's mother said. "So, thank you so much officers because if it wasn't for you guys, we probably, definitely wouldn't be here with our Lucia."Jaramillo de Graham recommends all parents take classes so they can properly administer CPR or life saving techniques to children if they are choking. On Thursday night, those officers were honored by city council and Lucia's parents. 2260
