Residents in states hit by Hurricane Laura continue the long recovery to restoring their homes and businesses destroyed in the Category 4 storm.The death toll from Hurricane Laura has risen to 19 people across Louisiana and Texas.Power and water outages were widely reported in the hardest-hit areas, and it is expected to take weeks before the outages are restored.One of the places hit by the storm was Orange, Texas. Strong winds destroyed buildings, downed power lines and uprooted trees.Resident Robert Matthews is an employee at Mowers, Tractors Inc. in Orange. President Donald Trump tweeted on Friday that he has signed an executive order calling for stiff punishment against those who damage statues and monuments.The order comes days after protesters attempted to topple a statue of President Andrew Jackson from Lafayette Park near the White House. Dozens of officers moved in to push the protesters back.In recent weeks, there have been calls from supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement to remove statues and monuments of those tied to slavery and the Confederacy. Those calls have been met with swift opposition from Trump and fellow Republican leaders.But the movement has found support from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Califfornia, who has asked for 11 statues in the Capitol of Confederate leaders being removed from the complex. “We are looking at long-term jail sentences for these vandals and these hoodlums and these anarchists and agitators,” Trump said earlier this week.Trump later added in an interview with Fox News, “We should learn from the history. And if you don’t understand your history, you will go back to it again."“I just had the privilege of signing a very strong Executive Order protecting American Monuments, Memorials, and Statues - and combatting recent Criminal Violence. Long prison terms for these lawless acts against our Great Country!” Trump tweeted late Friday.The executive order calls for federal laws to be used to arrest those who topple statues and monuments, but it's unclear how the order will be largely enforced across the country. President-elect Joe Biden will not be sworn into office until January 20, but it appears he is taking action now to do what he can to control the record-breaking spread of the coronavirus.Biden will announce a coronavirus task force on Monday, according to comments he made Saturday night. "On Monday, I will name a group of leading scientists and experts as transition advisors to help take the Biden-Harris COVID plan and convert it into an action blueprint that starts on January 20th, 2021. That plan will be built on a bedrock of science. It will be constructed out of compassion, empathy, and concern," Biden said during a speech Saturday night.The announcement about this team comes before other traditional presidential transition team announcements, like potential cabinet members and senior White House staff.Aides to Biden tell media outlets the task force plans to hold frequent televised briefings on the crisis.The task force will be led by three people at this point; former Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, former Food and Drug Administration Commissioner David Kessler and Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith of Yale University, a Biden campaign official told NBC, CNN, and Axios. There will reportedly be 12 members of the team."Our work begins with getting COVID under control. We cannot repair the economy, restore our vitality, or relish life’s most precious moments — hugging a grandchild, birthdays, weddings, graduations, all the moments that matter most to us — until we get this virus under control," Biden said. President Donald Trump tweeted on Monday that Sec. of Defense Mark Esper has been terminated.Trump added that he has tasked Christopher C. Miller to take over as Acting Sec. of Defense.Esper took over as Acting Sec. of Defense in June and was named as the department's director shortly thereafter. Late last week, NBC News reported that Esper had drafted a resignation letter in the days following the 2020 presidential election.Esper has been at odds with Trump throughout his tenure. In June, he said he opposed the President's call to use active-duty military members to break up protests against police brutality in the wake of George Floyd's death.NBC News also reports that Esper plans to help Congress draft legislation that would re-name military bases that honor Confederate generals — a policy that Trump also opposes.Esper was Trump's second full-time Secretary of Defense.
