SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council voted unanimously Monday to expand city-imposed curfews on five local parks in North Park, City Heights and near Balboa Park. The vote will establish a midnight-to-6 a.m. curfew at Cedar Ridge Mini Park, Montclair Neighborhood Park, North Park Community Park and North Park Mini Park and a 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew at City Heights Square Mini Park. The council added curfews to the five parks after residents expressed concerns about people breaking the law after-hours on park grounds. The city does not currently have a blanket park curfew, which would make it illegal to be in a park after a certain time, but many of the city's parks generally close at or some time after sunset. Multiple City Council members expressed concern that the curfews could unfairly target homeless residents. North Park, City Heights and areas adjacent to Balboa Park currently have a significant portion of the city's homeless population. "This is about trying to address legitimate public safety concerns," said City Councilman Chris Ward, who represents the district encompassing all five parks. "A huge focus of mine is to make sure that this is not inappropriately used to criminalize homelessness." SAN DIEGO (CNS) - One of nine servicemembers killed last month when an amphibious assault vehicle sank in the ocean near San Clemente Island was laid to rest Friday at Miramar National Cemetery.Lance Cpl. Chase D. Sweetwood, 18, was among those killed in the July 30 maritime training mission when the vehicle they were in took on water and sank.Family members say the Portland resident was born in San Diego and grew up in Chula Vista, and died one day before his 19th birthday.Sweetwood was honored during a Friday morning funeral that included military honors and a procession from the Patriot Guard Riders.Eight Camp Pendleton-based Marines, including Sweetwood, and a Navy sailor died in the mishap. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council rejected an emergency ordinance Tuesday that would have banned motorized scooters on boardwalks in Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, Mission Bay and La Jolla.  State law already bans motorized scooters from sidewalks but doesn't mention boardwalks.   The vehicles have become increasingly common in San Diego since they were introduced in February by scooter-sharing companies Bird and LimeBike. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Kmart store in Spring Valley is among 46 unprofitable outlets slated to start closeout sales this week, according to an announcement from the Sears Holding Corp.Five stores in California are among the 12 Kmart and 33 Sears stores slated to close by November. This includes the Kmart store at 935 Sweetwater Road in Spring Valley.The other California closures are Kmart stores in Los Angeles, Antioch, and Clovis and a Sears in Santa Cruz.Sears Holding Corp. owns both the Sears and Kmart chains.
