BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Xinhuanet) --The air quality has worsened in the Chinese capital since Wednesday, triggering renewed discontent among residents.Without rainfall and wind to dispel pollutants, particulate matter has been accumulating in the air. Most monitoring stations measured PM 10 (particulate matter smaller than 10 micrograms) at higher than 300 micrograms a cubic meter. In southwestern Beijing's Fangshan district, the Liangxiang station recorded 516 micrograms of PM 10 a cubic meter, the highest reading of the day, according to the Beijing Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center.More than 150 micrograms a cubic meter is considered hazardous to health.Beijing has been shrouded by heavy smog off and on this winter, and the ongoing air concerns are wearing on residents particularly as they prepare to celebrate the Spring Festival holiday next week."I almost got choked by the smog when I stepped out of the office building on Wednesday," said Yang Yanli, 24, an accountant. "The smell is so terrible, as though I'm inhaling chunks of coal, that it has spoiled my holiday mood.""PM 10 intensity has been particularly high these days," said Wang Qiuxia, a researcher at the Green Beagle, a non-governmental organization based in Beijing.Unlike the smog that hit mostly the southern part of the capital on Jan 1, the smog in recent days has shrouded the entire city, according to the Beijing environmental protection bureau.Worse yet, it will linger until Saturday, when the wind will pick up and disperse it, the bureau predicted. The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention suggests people stay at home to protect themselves from respiratory and heart problems triggered by heavy smog."The intensity of indoor pollutants is 30 to 60 percent lower than those outdoors during a hazy day," said Xu Dongqun, an officer with the environmental bureau. "I suggest people with respiratory problems put off traveling if the smog lingers."But many people said they had to brave the foul air to travel, especially migrants who are eager to reunite with their families during Spring Festival."No one likes to travel when the air is this bad, but do you have any choice when Spring Festival is coming?" asked Feng Xiao, a public servant at China's General Administration of Sport. The 24-year-old plans to travel by train from Beijing to her hometown in East China's Shandong province on Friday.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced Thursday a joint, large-scale, national study of tobacco users to monitor and assess the behavioral and health impacts of new government tobacco regulations. The initiative is the first large-scale NIH/FDA collaboration on tobacco regulatory research since the U.S. Congress granted FDA the authority to regulate tobacco products in an act in 2009. Scientists at NIH's National Institute on Drug Abuse and the FDA's Center for Tobacco Products will coordinate the effort."The launch of this study signals a major milestone in addressing one of the most significant public health burdens of the 21st century," said FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg in a statement. "The results will strengthen FDA's ability to fulfill our mission to make tobacco-related death and disease part of America's past and will further guide us in targeting the most effective actions to decrease the huge toll of tobacco use on our nation's health."Investigators will follow more than 40,000 users of tobacco- product and those at risk for tobacco use ages 12 and older. They will examine what makes people susceptible to tobacco use; evaluate use patterns and resulting health problems; study patterns of tobacco cessation and relapse in the era of tobacco regulation; evaluate the effects of regulatory changes on risk perceptions and other tobacco-related attitudes; and assess differences in attitudes, behaviors and key health outcomes in racial-ethnic, gender, and age subgroups."We are pleased to collaborate with the FDA on this study that may provide us with a better understanding of the impact of product regulation on tobacco prevention and cessation," said NIH Director Francis Collins. While smoking rates have dropped significantly since their peak in the 1960s, nearly 70 million Americans ages 12 and older were current users of tobacco products in 2010. As a result, death and disease caused by tobacco use is still a tremendous public health burden. Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of disease, disability, and death in the United States. Cigarette smoking results in more than 443,000 premature deaths in the United States each year -- more than alcohol, illegal drug use, homicide, suicide, car accidents, and AIDS combined.

ACCRA, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- A strange disease has hit inhabitants of the Amansie West District in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, near Kumasi, 270 km north of the capital, claiming two lives, health officials said here on Monday.Director of Public Health Dr. Joseph Amankwa told Xinhua that the disease, which had been identified as Laffa viral hemorrhagic fever, and had symptoms similar to those of malaria, caused victims to bleed to death.Dr. Amankwa said he received information about the infection over the weekend but indicated that no other details were made available."We are sending a team to the affected area to verify what the actual situation is to determine our next action. We are also liaising with the World Health Organization to gather enough data on the infections and soon information will be sent out to the public," he said.According to reports carried by local Joy fm radio station, the disease was the first of its kind in the country. The reports quoted health officials as saying infection was passed on from infected rodents like mice and rats and was highly contagious."About two months ago, a young man of 19 years came to our health center here and complained of malaria, so we treated him for malaria but suddenly, blood started coming from the nose, mouth, anus and the ears, and immediately he died," Municipal Director of Health in the Amansie West District, Dominic Brobbey told the radio station. He warned that although the situation was under control, there were no drugs to treat the disease in Ghana, and therefore urged government to expedite action to acquire the necessary drugs to prevent further deaths.

BEIJING, Nov. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- The U.S. FBI and police in the Philippines have arrested four alleged hackers in Manila with connections to a terrorist group in Saudi Arabia, according to media reports Monday. The four who were arrested last Wednesday hacked into AT&T Inc.'s phone systems as part of a plan to funnel money to a Saudi-based terror group, the reports said. The hackers, according to the investigators, worked for a group that helped finance a deadly 2008 terrorist attack in Mumbai, India.Investigators also said the hacking cost AT&T around 2 million U.S. dollars. And an AT&T representative told Reuters that it "ended up writing off some fraudulent charges that appeared on customer bills" but did not comment on the 2 million dollars figure."AT&T and its network were neither targeted nor breached by the hackers," AT&T spokeswoman Jan Rasmussen said. "AT&T only assisted law enforcement in the investigation that led to the arrest of a group of hackers."

MOSCOW, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- A Soyuz-2.1B rocket carried a Glonass-M navigation satellite into orbit early Monday after a two-day delay caused by high winds, a Russian Space Forces spokesman said."The launch of the booster rocket is as scheduled. The satellite Glonass-M was put into the orbit under control at 03:55 Moscow time (2355 GMT on Sunday)," said Colonel Alexei Zolotukhin.Zolotukhin told reporters that the rocket was launched at 0:15 Moscow time (2015 GMT, Sunday) from the Plesetsk Space Center in northern Russia. The Russian Space Forces said the launch was initially scheduled for Saturday but was postponed due to high winds.Glonass is the Russian equivalent of the U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS), which is designed for both military and civilian use. The system requires 24 operational and 2-3 reserve satellites in orbit to ensure global coverage. In December 2010, a malfunction of the booster resulted in a loss of three Glonass satellites.
