There was a disturbance in the Force at the box office this weekend.Disney and Lucasfilm's "Solo: A Star Wars Story," a prequel film about the origins of Han Solo, made an estimated 1 million domestically for its four-day weekend opening which includes the Monday holiday, according to Disney. That makes "Solo" the smallest opening for a "Star Wars" film since 2002.The number, while being the biggest Memorial Day Weekend debut in the last four years, is also solidly under industry expectations. There will be two new headquarters for Amazon, with 25,000 people in each location.Amazon has not announced which two cities the headquarters will be in, but that information is expected later this week, according to?the Wall Street Journal.The HQ2 split will happen because of a lack of technology talent.It has been more than a year since the company sought proposals from cities desiring to be home to the headquarters. Amazon's current headquarters is in Seattle and has led to problematic traffic and increased housing costs. TIJUANA, Mexico (KGTV) — Health conditions continue deteriorating Friday in Tijuana where thousands of migrants are camping, contributing to the opening of a second shelter 45 minutes away.The new shelter in an area known as El Barretal has a roof, dry floor and can house 3,000 migrants, Rodolfo Olimpo, a representative from Baja California State's Special Committee on Migration Issues said. Friday, about a thousand were shuttled by bus to the new shelter. There are no lighting fixtures, but migrants are using portable lights as well as flashlights.In the first shelter, the floor is mud, puddles everywhere and the entire area is littered with junk. One man brushed his teeth over a muddy puddle.10News Reporter Laura Acevedo went to Tijuana Thursday and spoke with the migrants living in squalor. One woman from Honduras, Leida Reyes, told her she thinks this is better than what they lived with back home.She said she couldn't walk around freely without fear, her children never attended school because it was too dangerous.When asked about the President's hard stance on migrants, she said she thinks he'll have a change of heart when he understands they're coming from a country that they can no longer live in safely.Reyes has been in TJ for about 20 days and is waiting for her number to be called so her case for asylum can be processed.No one has stated how long either shelter will be in place. 1418
Through music, New York City's "Hip Hop Public Health" is creatively reaching underserved communities. Using a variety of campaigns and health-related topics, they're not only getting local and national interest, they're getting noticed around the world. Their most recent release has to do with salt and uses a popular song from the 90s.You might recognize the song and tune, but this time, instead of "Let's Talk about Sex," "Let's Talk about Salt" stars the Grammy winning Cheryl "Salt" James from the musical group Salt-N-Pepa. The song is focused on preventing hypertension, which has a lot do with salt.“The reality is most people consume way too much salt. It’s ubiquitous in the American diet,” said the "Hip Hop Doc," who is also known as Dr. Olajide Williams. “I still haven’t fully embraced it but it's a fun name and whatever I can do to further the cause to inspire young children to be healthy, I’d embrace any moniker for that."Dr. Williams is a neurologist, public health expert, a professor at Columbia University, and chief of staff of neurology at Columbia University. As if that wasn't enough on his place, he's also the founder of Hip Hop Public Health.“I started it because of the tremendous disparities and inequities that flood communities of color.”Dr. Williams says that to affect systemic change, we need a multi-layered approach, which has a lot to do with communication.“Information – adequate, effective information doesn’t penetrate a lot of our marginalized communities of color sufficiently enough, effectively enough to enable, ignite and inspire behavior change,” said Dr. Williams, who also says there are often problems with the credibility of the messenger.Dr. Williams developed a model in which hip-hop icons deliver messages. People are drawn to the music which then connects them to the information. Hypertension prevention is just one of their missions. They've promoted inclusion and fought childhood obesity with Special Olympics.This past spring, they released "20 Seconds Or More" to empower youth with accurate information about COVID-19. CEO and Executive Director of Hip Hop Public Health, Lori Rose Benson, says “we’re hearing from schools all around the country, in fact all around the world, about how habits are changing.”Benson says their handwashing song was used at an international school in India.“We have a very strong infrastructure in terms of connecting with school communities. We work very closely with school districts all around the country, from New York City to Seattle to West Palm Beach, Florida, and Boston.”All of the resources are free, and their reach is crafted towards the platforms in which youth would engage. That includes things like social media websites and YouTube.According to a 2017 statistic from the American Heart Association, African Americans were 20% more likely to die from heart disease and African American women are 60% more likely to have high blood pressure. And affecting change, Dr. Williams says, starts with our youth.“We know that knowledge is power and when you’re empowered by knowledge, you can change your behaviors and operate a certain way and sometimes these behavior changes are the difference between life and death.”These efforts are culturally tailored to make a difference, which will hopefully have a huge impact on all of our futures. 3359
They are everywhere.Residents in the Dobson Ranch neighborhood of Mesa say they're fed up with the number of feral cats that are roaming the neighborhood. Alan Robinson, who has lived in the community for more than 20 years said the problem started about four or five years ago. "There was one time I opened my door and I counted 35 cats on my front lawn," said Robinson.Now with cats mating, neighbors reported seeing dozens of kittens also roaming the streets. Robinson said these cats were urinating and defecating on front lawns, planters, by front doors, and in backyards.He says cushions on his backyard patio furniture that were coated with a thick layer of cat hair. During an interview, a cat appeared out of nowhere in the backyard and jumped onto a wall.Robinson said he had installed spikes on parts of his backyard wall to keep the cats away.Another resident said he had to buy expensive chemicals to treat his yard because of the waste left behind."When I try to mow the lawn the smell is so strong, I'm inhaling it. I've had to buy masks so I don't breathe it in," resident Jim Jarvis said.Residents believed the feral cats were attracted to their neighborhood for a reason."The problem statement is not that we have feral cats. The problem statement is that some people feed those feral cats. They call this place home," Robinson said.Pictures and videos of the feral cats taken by residents in the community showed at least eight cats sitting in the backyard of one home, by a swimming pool. Another woman who asked us not to identify her shared photos and videos of almost a dozen cats sitting on a neighbor's front lawn.Other pictures taken by Robinson showed cats on the sidewalk, cats sleeping on top of parked cars, on the roofs of homes.One cat appeared to have several large lumps on it's back.Robinson said he had done a lot of research that showed the health hazards in communities with feral cats.He pointed to a study published in "Trends in Parasitology" showing cat feces can be a source of parasites that can affect humans and other animals in the neighborhood.However, most Phoenix-area shelters will not take in alley cats, as they are considered free-roaming creatures, unlike dogs.Some animal advocates say feral cats can live healthy lives outdoors. Most Arizona counties have Trap-Neuter-Return programs for feral cats, calling it the best way to control the growing population of alley cats in the community.The Animal Defense League runs a trap, neuter and return program in Arizona. Officials ask those interested in the program fill out a form on their website.According to information posted on the site, the number of animals killed in local shelters has decreased since their predecessor started the Spay Neuter Hotline. 2829
