JERUSALEM, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Middle East envoy Wu Sike on Wednesday met with Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Dan Meridor in Jerusalem. They discussed Sino-Israeli relations and the current status of the Middle East peace process.China has consistently advocated that all concerned parties settle their differences through negotiations, and achieve comprehensive peace in this region, said Wu. The direct talks between Israel and the Palestinians, which started early September, is an important opportunity in the peace process, and has firm support from China, he added.Wu said that China is deeply concerned about the present stalemate in the talks. Chinese government calls for efforts from all parties to show flexibility and compromise on various issues, including settlement construction, so as to put the negotiation back on track, reach a final-status agreement, and realize peaceful coexistence between Israel and the Palestinians, he said.Meridor speaks highly of the active role China has played in promoting the Middle East peace process. FUZHOU, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Tropical storm Lionrock, the eighth of this year, made landfall on east China's Fujian Province early Thursday morning, local meteorologists said.The storm landed at Gulei Town of Zhangpu County at around 6:50 a.m. with a speed of 82.8 km per hour near its center.Under the impact of Lionrock, torrential rain was seen along the coast of Zhangzhou City, and the rain was the heaviest in Dongshan and Zhangpu counties.No casualties have been reported.Local meteorologists have warned residents of mudflows and landslides that might be triggered by the tropical storm.The meteorologists forecast that rainfalls would be up to 100 to 200 mm in Zhangzhou, Quanzhou, Xiamen and Putian cities of Fujian from Thursday to Friday.By 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, 162,200 people in the province had been evacuated to safe places, and 50,703 fishing ships had been back to harbors.

VIENNA, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- China supported the proposal of establishing a Middle East nuclear-weapon-free zone, a senior Chinese diplomat said here Thursday.China had always stood by strengthening the international non- proliferation regime, and committed to advancing the universality, effectiveness and authority of the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), said Hu Xiaodi, China's permanent representative and ambassador to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Vienna.To this end, China supported building a Middle East nuclear- weapon-free zone, maintained Israel should join the NPT as a non- nuclear-weapon state at an early date, and put all its nuclear facilities under comprehensive safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said Hu, who was addressing the IAEA board meeting, which started Monday."Meanwhile, all countries in the region should conscientiously fulfill NPT obligations, as well as sign and ratify the IAEA safeguards agreements and its Additional Protocols," Hu added.He went on to say China welcomed the proposal endorsed in the final document of the NPT Review Conference this May, which calls for convening an international conference in 2012 on the establishment of a zone free of nuclear weapons and all other weapons of mass destruction in Middle East.Hu also stressed the willingness of the Chinese to work with the international community for a non-nuclear-weapon area in the Middle East, and achieving peace and stability in the region.
