SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Sky10 was there as police and firefighters responded to a car crash in San Carlos Friday evening. The crash, which happened just after 5:30 p.m., happened in the 6200 block of Del Paso Avenue, not far from Patrick Henry High School. The female driver hit the gas pedal instead of the brake when approaching the garage door, police said. She hit the washer and dryer, pushing them through the wall and into the house. The driver and occupants of the home were not injured in the crash. Firefighters helped pull down the garage door and advised the family to have a structural expert check the walls where the washer and dryer pushed through.   700

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego-based Helix has new FDA Emergency approval for its COVID-19 test that will make getting a test easier.The test is now approved for self-administration and for asymptomatic people to take.That means testing sites can give more tests without having to increase their staffing levels."It simplifies the collection," says Dr. James Lu, the President of Helix. "You can do it without having to have another person watching you."The test is also much simpler than the traditional upper nasal swab, as it only requires the lower area of the nostril to be swabbed."It actually just goes into the anterior narrows of the nostril area, and you just rotate it five times in each nostril," says Dr. Lu."It can be totally done by yourself, is completely painless, and it takes less than 30 seconds."RELATED: University City lab switches gears to create COVID-19 testsHowever, unlike home-pregnancy tests or DNA swab kits, Dr. Lu says Helix's COVID test still needs to be done in a clinical setting, so medical professionals can report the results and advise patients after they get results."We still think it's essential to have a physician in the loop, particularly for those cases where you do have positives," says Dr. Lu. "Those patients do need to be reported, and also make sure they have the right guidance in terms of quarantine."The simpler, self-administered swab could also make people more likely to get tested since they don't have to go through the old way of testing, which involved a swab shoved all the way up their nasal cavity.More testing also means more people will know if they're sick even if they don't have symptoms. That will make it easier for businesses and schools to reopen in the future."We believe that accurate and easily available, fast turnaround testing is essential to controlling the disease," says Dr. Lu. "And it's essential for identifying individuals who are sick or potentially spreaders so they can quarantine."Helix plans to make 100,000 of the newly approved tests every day. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Pride announced Thursday they will not allow law enforcement agencies to have a contingent in the Pride Parade or a booth at the Pride Festival as a show of support for the black LGBTQ community and until policing changes are made.San Diego Pride's statement comes amid a major push for police reform and defunding across the nation in the wake of the in-custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis on Memorial Day.In a letter to San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, Pride officials asked that he and the City of San Diego “stand with us in support of our Black LGBTQ and ally communities.”Pride San Diego Executive Director Fernando Lopez told 10News, “It can be traumatizing for folks to see people with guns and Tasers and batons march down a parade.”He added, “Now someone who’s black can’t take off their skin. A law enforcement officer can take off their uniform. They are a whole human being. If they want to take off their uniform and march with a peace flag or Latin X community … if the police chief wants to not wear his uniform next to me next year, I’d be happy to have him walk next to me next year.”Pride officials laid out a 4-step action plan which they hope the mayor and city will support:STEP 1: Law enforcement agencies will no longer have contingents in the San Diego Pride Parade or booths in our Pride Festival. This may be reassessed after the completion of Step 4.For Step 1, Pride officials added: "Everyone is still welcome to march, volunteer, and enjoy at Pride. San Diego Pride will continue to maintain our relationships with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to continue serving as a bridge to our community and ensure community safety remains our number one priority. Law enforcement agencies will oversee road closures and vital safety precautions in coordination with Pride’s leadership team."STEP 2: The City of San Diego will recognize the San Diego Pride Parade as a free speech event and no longer bill the organization for road closures and safety.“San Diego Pride will use these savings to enhance the safety of our event through other groups and tools. The remaining savings will fund Black-led LGBTQ programming," according to Pride officials.Law enforcement will still be needed to help maintain order at the event."Go back to recognizing us as a free speech event. Just like you do all of our other marches and protests, just like when you close the streets for us there, just like when you work to keep us safe there, still do that work. But rather than siphoning money out of the LGBTQ community, allow us to retain those funds and invest them in the black LGBTQ community directly,” Lopez said.STEP 3: The City of San Diego will immediately adopt the #8CantWait Campaign recommendations.Pride officials are asking that the remaining items in the #8CANTWAIT campaign: Ban chokeholds and strangleholds, require deescalation, duty to intervene, ban shooting at moving vehicles, and require all force be reported. The other three items that are part of the campaign -- require warning before shooting, exhaust all alternatives before shooting, and establish use of force continuum -- are policies in place in the City of San Diego, according to Campaign Zero.STEP 4: Support a phased approach to policy reform recommendations centering Black LGBTQ San Diegans.According to officials, “San Diego Pride will host a series of intentional conversations centering Black LGBTQ voices to identify tangible reform, accountability, and transparency goals for law enforcement agencies. Pride will also amplify other issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in our region arising from these conversations. These phased conversations will include LGBTQ organization leaders, elected officials and community members. We will work as an organization and in coalition to realize these goals. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — State officials hope California’s new 10 p.m. stay-at-home order will slow the spread of COVID-19, otherwise, another 10,000 San Diegans are projected to contract the virus in the next 10 days.That’s according to a new county-by-county forecast from Facebook, which rolled out the prediction software last month.Facebook projects L.A. County will see the second-largest increase in cases in the country by November 30. San Diego County is projected to add the 15th most cases, reaching a total of 78,594 infections by Nov. 30.The two-week forecast was released before Governor Gavin Newsom announced enhanced restrictions. Facebook will release a new two-week forecast next week.“Many other forecasts around the world are only predicting caseload at a country or state level,” said Laura McGorman with Facebook’s Data for Good team. “We’re trying to be much more local in this approach because we know so much of the COVID-19 response is in fact local.”McGorman said the forecast tool could help county and state officials plan hospital bed space, ICU capacity, ventilators and other critical supplies.The map is powered by artificial intelligence that draws on seven kinds of data. They use outside metrics like confirmed cases, doctor visits and the weather combined with information Facebook collects like a survey of people’s symptoms and GPS location data.The location data helps gauge whether people are staying home and isolating or circulating among the community, according to McGorman.Facebook only pulls data from users who opt in and no, they’re not reading your posts. All of the information, which is aggregated to the county or state level to protect privacy, is available for the public to download.The tech giant initially started Data for Good three years ago to help with disaster-relief projects, McGorman said. Among other applications, their location data can quickly predict if evacuations are working.“Typically, groups like the Red Cross have to knock door-to-door to see if people are still home, or wait for people to show up at shelters to see if they’ve gotten out of harm’s way,” she said.The software has also been used to detect network outages when a hurricane knocks out cellphone towers, she said.Facebook’s COVID-19 mapping tools have been used to inform policymakers in New York and Mexico, and the data has helped analyze the effectiveness of stay-at-home orders in California, McGorman said. 2457
