All hail the king."Black Panther," Marvel's first film directed by an African-American, brought in an estimated 2 million for its three-day debut in North America this weekend. That's the fifth biggest opening of all time. The opening for the film starring Chadwick Boseman and Michael B. Jordan did not just shatter expectations, it broke multiple box office records too.It blew away the record for the largest opening for an African-American director. That belonged to F. Gary Gray and "The Fate of the Furious," which opened to million last April.Disney estimates that the film will bring in 8 million domestically for the four-day holiday weekend. The film brought in an opening of 1 million around the world."Black Panther" also shattered the record for an opening in February, which belonged to "Deadpool," the R-rated superhero film from 20th Century Fox that brought in 2 million when it opened in 2016.It is the second biggest opening for a Marvel Studios film, behind 2012's "The Avengers." It out paced other huge hits like "Avengers: Age of Ultron," "Captain America: Civil War" and "Iron Man 3." It is the studio's 18th straight number one opening. The record-breaking weekend is watershed moment for Hollywood. With "Black Panther" reaching box office heights that have eluded other African-American titles, the film's totals could impact change in the industry by encouraging diversity in front of and behind the camera. The film is an "important milestone," according to comScore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian."'Black Panther' exceeded even the grandest box office expectations while simultaneously breaking down cinematic barriers and marking a turning point in the evolution of the genre," he said. The film garnered an "A+" CinemaScore from audiences and a?near perfect 97% score on review site Rotten Tomatoes, which makes it one of the best-reviewed superhero movies of all time. 1935
After making a go at in-person classes, a jump in COVID-19 cases on campus has prompted the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill to shift to virtual only for all undergraduate courses, the university announced Monday.UNC will start distance learning on Wednesday. The university reported 129 confirmed COVID-19 cases last week, and a jump in its positivity rate from 2.8% to 13.6%. The university said it has tested 954 students with 177 in isolation and 349 in quarantine. The university said that most of the infected students have mild symptoms. The university said graduate, professional and health affairs schools will continue to be taught as they are, or as directed by the schools.UNC will allow students to cancel residence hall housing without penalty in an effort to depopulate the campus.“There are no easy answers as the nation navigates through the pandemic,” UNC President Peter Hans said. “At this point, we haven’t received any information that would lead to similar modifications at any of our other universities. Whether at Chapel Hill or another institution, students must continue to wear facial coverings and maintain social distancing, as their personal responsibility, particularly in off-campus settings, is critical to the success of this semester and to protect public health.”The university’s football team is still slated to play this fall, along with other members of the ACC. Two of the five “Power 5” conferences, the Pac-12 and Big 10, have opted to delay their seasons to the spring. The ACC, SEC and Big 12 are still slated to play this fall. The good news for the state of North Carolina is coronavirus cases are declining. According to New York Times data, the state was averaging 2,000 new cases per day, but that number has fallen to under 1,300. Deaths are still an issue in the Tar Heel state, with an average of 25 people dying per day from coronavirus-related illnesses. 1926
Actress Tamera Mowry-Housley was active on social media on Thursday looking for help locating her and husband's niece Alaina Housley who was presumably at the California bar where a gunman killed 12 before taking his own life. Late Thursday morning, the couple confirmed to NBC News that Alaina Housley was among the 12 killed. "Our hearts are broken. We just learned that our niece Alaina was one of the victims of last night’s shooting at Borderline bar in Thousand Oaks," the couple said in a joint statement to NBC. "Alaina was an incredible young woman with so much life ahead of her and we are devastated that her life was cut short in this manner. We thank everyone for your prayers and ask for privacy at this time."Mowry-Housley's social media thread hours after the late-night shooting shows the frantic nature of trying to gather information of loved ones after mass shootings. The shooting took place before midnight late Wednesday night, and Mowry-Housley's Instagram post came more than nine hours later. Mowry-Housley's sister Tia Mowry was also active on social media trying to gather information. "Alaina Housely we are praying," Tia Mowry wrote in Instagram Thursday morning. "We love u! If you know anything or any information please let us know. We love you! #borderline"Earlier on Thursday morning, Alaina Housley's roommate had posted a plea on Twitter trying to find information on her roommate. Mowry-Housley responded to her niece's roommate and went to Twitter looking for any information she could gather on her niece. Mowry-Housley's husband Adam Housley then went to a California hospital in search of their niece. The Los Angeles Times reported that he was turned away by guards at the hospital. “My gut is saying she’s inside the bar, dead. I’m hoping I’m wrong,” he told the LA Times. He added that his niece's Apple Watch and iPhone locators were tracked to the bar's dance floor. The Los Angeles Times reported that Alaina Housley was 18 years old and a freshman at Pepperdine University. Pepperdine confirmed that 16 of its students were at the bar at the time of the shooting, and there was one unaccounted for as of late Wednesday morning. 2335
Air pollution could be more damaging to our health than previously thought, according to a new study, which found that prolonged exposure to dirty air has a significant impact on our cognitive abilities, especially in older men.According to the study published Tuesday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, breathing polluted air causes a "steep reduction" in scores on verbal and math tests.Researchers at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) examined data from the national China Family Panel Studies longitudinal survey, mapping the cognitive test scores of nearly 32,000 people over the age of 10 between 2010 and 2014 against their exposure to short- and long-term air pollution. 730
Airbnb has updated some of its COVID-19 protocols, requiring everyone to wear a mask and social distance when interacting with each other, as well as introducing a five-step cleaning process for hosts to follow amid the coronavirus pandemic. The online rental company also stated in its announcement that by Nov. 20, hosts must comply with their five-step cleaning process or risk having their accounts suspended or removed from the site. The company's cleaning program, which was developed alongside fellow health and hospitality experts, consists of hosts preparing themselves and their team to clean effectively, sweeping and dusting before sanitizing, spraying high-touch surfaces (door handles, light switches) with approved disinfectant spray, referring to its room-by-room checklist to make sure everything is cleaned correctly, and resetting the room.Once a host commits to the five-step cleaning process, Airbnb says their listings will have a highlight spotlighting their commitment to clean. To stop the spread of COVID-19, Airbnb only allows a maximum of 10 guests per stay, washing your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds, and wearing protective equipment at all times.Airbnb has a list of protocols for cleaning on specific rooms in your house for guests, which can be found here. 1305
