OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A state-wide program to help community college students transfer to 4-year schools has found increased success at Mira Costa College.The Puente Program helps educationally disadvantaged students navigate the complicated process of applying to 4-year schools, while also bringing them up to speed with other students who start their college careers at universities."They would transfer, but they were not ready," says Mira Costa Puente Counseling Coordinator Sinar Lomeli. "They didn't have the reading or writing comprehension skills. So they couldn't compete with students who were already there."The Puente Program began in 1981 at Chabot College in Hayward. It's now in 64 community colleges around the state. The students take two semesters of English reading and writing classes, and also get mentoring and counseling to guide them towards a 4-year degree."When I got to school, I was like a dog chasing a car," says Mira Costa Sophomore Manny Ramirez. "Getting into the Puente program gave me a sense of belonging. I could say I belong at college, and I can do whatever I set my mind to."Mira Costa's Puente Program is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2019. This year they're expanding to let current Puente students volunteer at elementary schools around Oceanside and Vista. That helps them get public service hours they can put on a college application. It also helps inspire the next generation to see college as a possibility."It gives us hope that we're leaving behind something for them to build on," says Ramirez.Results of the Puente Program have been well documented. Between 2013 and 2016, Puente student enrollment at UC schools has increased by 59%. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man was hit and killed by a train while crossing the tracks in Oceanside Saturday night.According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the man was hit around 11:20 p.m. on the 200 block of Surfrider Way. Deputies say the southbound train was traveling 55 miles per hour when the engineer spotted a man duck under the pedestrian crossing guard and try to run across the track. One day after Vermont lawmakers approved sweeping gun control measures that include limits on the size of magazines, gun-rights supporters held a large protest outside the state Capitol in Montpelier.And to boost enthusiasm, they handed out gifts: Hundreds of free rifle magazines, each capable of holding 30 rounds of ammunition.The stunt on Saturday was a direct jab at the new legislation, which Vermont Gov. Phil Scott has said he will sign. The amendment to the present law raises the purchase age of guns to 21; bans bump stocks, which allow semi-automatic weapons to fire more rapidly; and limits rifle magazines to 10 rounds.But Vermont residents will be permitted to keep larger-capacity magazines they already own, creating a sense of urgency among state gun owners looking to stock up before the bill becomes law."My fear is that legislators will pass knee-jerk legislation without any depth, any meaning, and it's really not going to make Vermont any safer," Rob Curtis, one of the rally's organizers, told CNN affiliate WCAX. OAKLAND, Calif. — A bust of Breonna Taylor was vandalized in Oakland, California.The Oakland Police Department is investigating after large pieces of the statue were found broken off sometime over the weekend, KGO and KTVU report.The sculpture was made by artist Lee Carson to honor the 26-year-old EMT who was shot and killed in her apartment by Louisville police officers in March. The deaths of Taylor, George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery prompted countless people across the country to take to the streets over the summer to protest police violence against people of color.Carson told KTVU that he hoped the piece would energize the Black Lives Matter movement, which seeks to eradicate white supremacy and intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities.Carson told KGO that the vandalism felt like an attack on Taylor and those fighting against racial injustice.The statue is made of clay, concrete, wood and foam, and was reportedly installed in the downtown area this month.
