WASHINGTON, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- An inexpensive drug that treats Type 2 diabetes has been shown to prevent a number of natural and man-made chemicals from stimulating the growth of breast cancer cells, according to a newly published study by a Michigan State University researcher. The research, led by pediatrics professor James Trosko and colleagues from South Korea's Seoul National University, provides biological evidence for previously reported epidemiological surveys that long-term use of the drug metformin for Type 2 diabetes reduces the risk of diabetes-associated cancers, such as breast cancers.The research appeared online this week in PLoS One.For the study, Trosko and colleagues focused on the concept that cancers originate from adult human stem cells and that there are many natural and man-made chemicals that enhance the growth of breast cancer cells. Using culture dishes, they grew miniature human breast tumors, or mammospheres, that activated a certain stem cell gene. Then the mammospheres were exposed to natural estrogen -- a known growth factor and potential breast tumor promoter -- and man-made chemicals that are known to promote tumors or disrupt the endocrine system.The team found that estrogen and the chemicals caused the mammospheres to increase in numbers and size. However, with metformin added, the numbers and size of the mammospheres were dramatically reduced. While each of the chemicals enhanced growth by different means, metformin seemed to be able to inhibit their stimulated growth in all cases."While future studies are needed to understand the exact mechanism by which metformin works to reduce the growth of breast cancers, this study reveals the need to determine if the drug might be used as a preventive drug and for individuals who have no indication of any existing cancers," Trosko said.

BEIJING, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- China restored 23,000 hectares of wetlands in 2011, according to the latest figures from the State Forestry Administration (SFA).An SFA spokesman said China reinforced wetland protection in 2011 by increasing subsidies in protecting wetlands. In the year the country carried out 42 wetland protection projects, increased 330,000 hectares of protected wetland areas, added four wetlands of international importance and 68 national wetland parks.The spokesman said in 2012 the country will further step up wetland protection and restoration, finish the second national wetland resources investigation and carry out pilot projects in assessing healthy conditions of the wetland ecological system.So far China has built more than 550 wetland natural reserves, 37 wetlands of international importance, which were listed in the Ramsar international wetland convention, and 100 national wetland parks. BEIJING, Otc. 26 (Xinhuanet) -- The more coffee people consume, the less likely they develop the most common form of skin cancer, a new study suggests, according to media reports Tuesday."Our study indicates that coffee consumption may be an important option to help prevent basal cell carcinoma," stated Fengju Song, lead researcher of the study and a postdoctoral fellow in the department of dermatology at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston.Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is reported to be a slow-growing form of skin cancer that accounts for 75 percent of all skin cancers. It is the most common type of skin cancer, with nearly one million new cases diagnosed each year in the United States.Although BCC is hardly fatal, if ignored, there may be consequences of treatment, including disfigurement, according to a USA Today report.The US researchers found that women who drank over three cups of coffee a day were 20 percent less likely to develop BCC, whereas the risk of having BCC for men who consumed more than three cups per day lowered 9 percent.To get the findings, the researchers analysed data from almost113,000 people between1984-2008 and over 23,000 were diagnosed with BCC.The researchers agreed that caffeinated coffee was associated with BCC risk reduction, but decaffeinated coffee did not have such effect.According to a Fox News report, besides cutting the risk of skin cancer, coffee consumption has also been found to lower the risk of breast cancer and prostate cancer and cancer overall."To the best of our knowledge, coffee consumption is a healthy habit," said Fengju Song, cited by the Fox News.The findings were presented Monday at the American Association for Cancer Research International Conference in Boston and not yet published in a scientific journal.
