BOULDER, Colo. — Employees at the Boulder County Hazardous Materials Management facility have seen quite a few changes over the years.The facility acts as a collection for the hazardous materials people use in their households. The center collects, separates and then safely disposes of chemicals, batteries and other items that are too dangerous to simply throw away.“Cleaning products, garden products, pool and spa chemicals, things like that,” program manager Shelly Fuller said.The list of items the facility accepts is quite long.“Latex paint, any cleaning products from your home, fluorescent lightbulbs — a lot of times you’ll have the four-footers or even the curly cues that are CFLs, so they all contain mercury,” Fuller said. "Pesticides, herbicides, rodenticides, fungicides, oil and antifreeze.”Fuller has been working at the facility for about six years and has been working with hazardous waste management for about 10 years.She said she’s seen some interesting items pass through the facility over the years.“We had some breast implants come in because of the silicon and formaldehyde they were in. We had snakes that someone had picked up off of the side of the road and wanted to keep as a specimen. Last year we got a jar of teeth,” Fuller said.Lately, though, employees at the facility have been dealing with a new challenge — vape products have been coming in by the pound.“In the last couple months, we’ve received about five pounds of e-liquid. An autopsy report released Friday has revealed the cause of death of the 7-year-old Guatemalan girl who died after being taken into US Customs and Border Protection custody late last year.Jakelin Caal Maquin died from a bacterial infection known as streptococcal sepsis, according to the autopsy report from the medical examiner's office in El Paso County, Texas. The report says streptococcus bacteria was found in the girl's lungs, adrenal gland, liver and spleen. It goes on to say the infection was "rapidly progressive," which led to "multiple organ dysfunction and death."Jakelin died in December, two days after she and her father, Nery Gilberto Caal, 29, were detained by US Customs and Border Protection.The law offices of Lynn Coyle, who represents Jakelin's family, released a statement saying it will continue to ask for an independent investigation of her death."While the report sheds light on Jakelin's cause of death, it still leaves many questions that require further review," the statement said. "The report's findings suggest that Jakelin's chances of surviving would have been improved with earlier medical intervention. According to a report by the National Fire Protection Association released in 2017, nearly 200 structure fires a year are blamed on Christmas trees. According to the report, fires originating from Christmas trees cause six deaths per year, on average. One-in-four fires from Christmas trees start from heat source such as a candle. Although buying an artificial tree likely decreases the risk of a fire, for every three fires sparked by a real Christmas tree, one is caused by an artificial tree. The National Fire Protection Association released Christmas tree fire prevention tips:· Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.· Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 2” from the base of the trunk. · Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights. · Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit. · Add water to the tree stand.
