SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — City Council members will consider two proposals to develop vacant city-owned properties into permanent housing for homeless veterans, seniors, and youth and young adults.The two proposals, conditionally awarded development bids by the city, will also provide on-site supportive services. One proposal by Community Housing Works’ includes building 26 units for chronically homeless youth and young adults on a .336-acre site at the former Serra Mesa Library. That proposal includes on-site case management by YMCA Youth and Family Services. Ideally, the development would open in August 2023.The second proposal by San Diego Community Housing Corporation would turn the 1.42-acre Scripps Ranch Park and Ride site into 60 units for veterans and seniors. San Diego Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly would provide on-site services. That proposal aims to open in January 2024."After a comprehensive review, we determined that both organizations submitted well-qualified and responsive proposals," said Deputy Chief Operating Officer Erik Caldwell. "Now, we will work on presenting both proposals to the City Council, so construction on these vital permanent housing projects can commence as soon as possible."The two proposals are in addition to two recent hotel purchases by the city to help homeless individuals transition into permanent housing. Last year, Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced that eight city properties would be offered up to develop into permanent supportive housing as well.In 2019, San Diego's Community Action Plan on Homelessness identified the need to increase permanent supportive housing by 2,659 units within the next 10 years, with 60% of those units developed within the first four years.A date hasn't been announced as to when the council will consider the two latest proposals. 1841

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Community activists spoke Friday at Lincoln High School, demanding a long-time teacher be removed amid allegations of racist and sexual comments made to students.The school board launched an investigation and put a monitor in the classroom at the Lincoln Park school.Activist Tasha Williamson went live on her Facebook page Monday at the school.“You better talk to our children like you would talk to your own children. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Before Vice President Mike Pence made his way to Coronado, he spent the morning at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel.The Vice President and Second lady stayed there during their San Diego Visit. A few protestors inflated the now well-known "Baby Trump" outside of the hotel; It's possible the Vice President got a look at the giant balloon. "We're hoping that the Vice President sees this and sees that there is resistance here in San Diego," says protestor Will Johnson. The giant balloon was an attention grabber for many who saw it on Park Boulevard. "I knew he was coming to town, but I didn't know he was staying here," says Kate Permenter. Permenter is in town for a convention and staying at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel, saying, "So last night people kind of started freaking out."Outside of the hotel, security checked every car making its way into the garage. Hotel guests say there are dozens of police officers and secret service agents inside of the hotel. "At every entrance, there are cops just kind of staring at you."Dozens of officers escorted the motorcade as the Vice President left downtown this morning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Coming to California, leaving the Golden State, the pandemic's opened up possibilities for people looking to move.Some are escaping cities with high costs of living, and others are looking for cities that offer bigger houses and more room to work from home.“When we landed on Florida, he said, ‘I can live there,’ and I said, ‘I can live there,’” said Crystal Sargent.About a week ago, Sargent moved from San Diego to southwest Florida.California's original stay at home order has changed the way she operates her company.Most everything is now done remotely; no need to all be in one physical location."During COVID, you know when you were just more stationary, and you didn't have to fight traffic, you didn't have to rush off from one meeting to the next, for me I could just focus on my client's success," Sargent said."There's just a lot that Utah doesn't offer that California does," said David Keller.Keller's a web developer for an eCommerce company.Right now, he lives in Utah."I've been here for a couple of years now, and I just could not wrap my head around the snow," he explained.Keller said his company changed its remote work policy, allowing some employees to work from anywhere in the country.At the end of this week, he's packing up and moving back to sunny southern California.Keller said if the pandemic hadn't shifted many employees to a remote work environment, he probably wouldn't be moving to California.People Moving According to a COVID-19 migration report from Hire A Helper, Americans are moving. The report found that across the country, 15% of all moves between January and June 2020 were forced by the pandemic. The company said another key finding of their report is that 37% of people moving due to COVID moved because they couldn't afford to live where they were living."At the state level, it's the states with a higher population, and a higher rate of COVID spread that saw the biggest net losses of moves. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As we continue to work through the pandemic, a couple of Carmel Valley kids are working to spread “some good news” for San Diegans. Brothers Zach and Asher Swazey are putting together their own newscasts.Its called “SGN San Diego.” The newscast is filled with good news.“You want to have something that will affect people in a positive way,” says 13-year-old Zach.The brothers are now working on episode two. They say it was a lot of work putting everything together.“It took us 2-3 weeks,” says ten-year-old Asher. “We went through multiple stages of editing. It took a little of time to make the script and film.”The boys say they were inspired to start SGN San Diego after watching actor and filmmaker John Krasinski on Youtube.The boys say their video is getting more views, but their headline is to make people feel good.“When you’re making a YouTube channel, it’s not about how many likes you get or how many subscribers, it’s how it affects people.”The brothers say their parents are also a big help.
