An Alabama woman says the temporary teeth that she wore with her zombie Halloween costume almost turned into permanent teeth.Anna Tew of Mobile County, Alabama told WKRG-TV she was forced to schedule an emergency dentist appointment after the "Devil Teeth" she wore with her costume wouldn't come out after nearly a day.Tew said she bought the fake teeth at Walmart to wear with a zombie costume as part of a haunted house at a local school. The teeth came with an adhesive that she applied before putting them in her mouth. But soon after leaving the haunted house, Tew realized the teeth wouldn't budge. On top of that, the teeth were extremely painful, meaning she couldn't eat or drink. At one point, Tew thought that drinking hot coffee would loosen the adhesive, but she told the Ledger-Enquirer that she ended up "drooling" the drink. 850

An influx of college financial aid applications this year means that money could run out for students who don’t file early.Due to financial strain caused by COVID-19, nearly 40% of families that didn’t previously plan to apply for federal financial aid now expect to do so, according to a recently released survey from Discover Student Loans. The federal government, states, colleges and other organizations use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, to award financial aid. You must complete the FAFSA to be considered for financial aid.You have 21 months to submit the FAFSA for any given academic year. For the 2021-22 school year, the FAFSA opens Oct. 1, 2020, and closes June 30, 2022. But that doesn’t mean you should wait.“There is no downside to applying early, but a lot of risk in applying late,” says Manny Chagas, vice president and head of marketing and product at Discover Student Loans. Here’s why you should file the FAFSA now.Better shot at more free moneyThe sooner you submit the FAFSA, the greater your chances are of getting free aid you don’t have to repay, such as grants or scholarships.Federal Pell Grant money likely won’t run out, but other need-based aid, including that awarded through your school and state, is limited and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Jack Murphy, financial aid counselor at the University of Northern Iowa, named the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant and his school’s tuition assistance grant as examples. The Federal Work-Study Program also has limited funds, so you’ll want to file the FAFSA early to take advantage of it.More time to appeal a financial aid decisionStudents and parents who are dissatisfied with their aid amounts or have a change in economic circumstances can appeal the financial aid award from their school. To do this, you need to petition your school with a financial aid appeal letter and provide evidence to support your need for more aid. If you wait too long, the aid money could run out. Those who file the FAFSA early are more likely to receive their school-based financial aid awards with their college acceptance letters. While your federal aid will be the same no matter where you attend college, you can send your FAFSA information to several schools to see which will give you the best school-based aid package. Doing so early will allow you to compare offers and appeal if necessary. If you apply for the FAFSA late, you not only risk a smaller award to begin with, but you also have less opportunity to “shop around” and submit a successful appeal letter.A quarter of parents surveyed by Discover Student Loans say they’ll appeal their financial aid decision because of previous award amounts and pandemic-induced changes in family finances. In speaking about the survey, Chagas emphasizes that there tends to be more money available early in the process, so students should make the FAFSA a priority.Murphy agrees. “Filing early makes sure you’re in the running to receive as many awards as possible,” he says. “We see students that get [aid] one year, but not the next.”They don’t lose out on aid because they no longer qualify, Murphy explains. They just waited too long.More From NerdWalletNerdWallet’s FAFSA GuideYour FAFSA Questions AnsweredWhat Are the FAFSA Requirements?Cecilia Clark is a writer at NerdWallet. An officer who hit and killed Susan Lotempio, 64, in a car crash last Friday was not driving with emergency lights or sirens on, Buffalo Police revealed Thursday morning. An attorney representing the officer confirmed to Scripps station WKBW in Buffalo that the man is Officer Daniel Ahearn.Lotempio was taking her morning walk near Hertel Ave and Tennyson Ave when an officer hit her with his police car. She died at the scene. The manual for Buffalo Police officers differentiates calls for service into three categories: routine, rapid and emergency response, according to Buffalo Police Captain Jeff Rinaldo."Based on the nature of the call that the officer was responding to, it would fall either within the routine or rapid response," Captain Rinaldo explained. "But, based on our very preliminary investigation, the officer was following our policy and it was not a call for service that necessarily dictated the use of the emergency lights and sirens."The Buffalo News first reported details about the emergency lights and sirens, citing anonymous police sources who said the officer "was traveling at between 30 and 40 mph, providing backup for another police officer going to a complaint about "an irrational person" on Starin Avenue"."At this point, we do not believe that speed was a factor," Captain Rinaldo said. "But, again, we're waiting on the final accident reconstruction from the State Police."Tom Burton, the attorney representing Officer Daniel Ahearn, said the officer is cooperating with investigators. Officer Ahearn immediately submitted a blood sample following the crash and a check of his phone showed it wasn't being used at the time of the accident, according to Burton."Where this appears to be leading is that it is a tragic accident, but nothing that involves any criminal wrongdoing," Burton said.New York State Police are handling accident reconstruction during the investigation. The New York State Attorney General's Office is investigating the death, as it does with any civilian death in an officer-involved situation.“The Attorney General’s Special Investigations and Prosecutions Unit has opened an investigation into this morning’s incident, pursuant to the Attorney General’s authority under Executive Order No. 147. We’re committed to conducting an independent, comprehensive, and fair investigation.” 2397

ANAHEIM (CNS) - Thousands of Disneyland enthusiasts lined up early Friday to experience the theme park's newest Star Wars Land ride.Bobby Navarro of Garden Grove said he got up at 4 a.m. with his friends and got into the park by 5:30 a.m.Navarro experienced Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance when it debuted at Disney World on Dec. 5, so he had some practice in using the company's application to sign up for a pass to the attraction. Navarro said it was key to get everyone in the group connected on the app and requesting a pass simultaneously, but that also meant he had to de-select others who were not at the park with his group.RIDE REVIEW & VIDEO: 'Rise of the Resistance' fulfills missing 'Star Wars' feel at Galaxy's Edge"The queue for the digital app started at 6 o'clock... and we still had to wait hours before the app opened," Navarro said. "And then, it was whoever is able to push the button fastest."Navarro and his group were assigned to boarding group 84, and he was advised the park may only be able to handle 82 boarding groups on Friday, but he was hopeful his group will get a chance to see the Anaheim version of the ride."The first day in Florida, they got up to boarding group 125," Navarro said."We're close to group 50 now," he said about 1 p.m.Navarro said even the wait in line for the ride in Florida helped guests feel immersed in the experience. The attraction included a hologram explaining the "context and storyline," he said.RELATED: California Adventure's 'Avengers Campus' set for summer 2020 openingCast members help guide guests through the line until the fun begins with an abduction and imprisonment by stormtroopers, he said. One of the more impressive attractions is a glass panel that makes participants feel as if they are looking into outer space, he said.As the "prisoners" are being told they will be "eliminated," resistance fighters break through with lightsabers to help lead an escape, Navarro said."They tell you, `Hurry up, get out,"' Navarro said.RELATED: Disneyland tickets are on sale for as low as right nowThe guests make their escape on a pod, he said."The mag-lev system is what really makes the ride," he said of the battleship in the attraction. "This really feels like a battleship.""They really did a great job of transporting you to a different place," he said. The ride takes about 20 minutes, he said.Anaheim police Sgt. Shane Carringer said the city has not experienced any issues with traffic in the area despite also hosting the National Association of Music Merchants convention."I haven't heard of any problems," he said. "These large events, although extraordinary for Anaheim, are definitely not out of our comfort zone to handle these pretty regularly. And Disney has ingress and egress down to a science."Carringer said he got to experience the new attraction last night."It was cool," he said. "My wife enjoyed it too." 2912

As Juventus and Napoli players emerged onto the pitch for Sunday's key Serie A match, viewers' attention was drawn to a red mark on each of the players' cheeks.Part of a campaign organized by Italian organization WeWorld Onlus, the league and players' association, the line of red lipstick was to help raise awareness of domestic violence in Italy. As well as every player in the league wearing the red mark across the weekend's fixtures, the initiative has also been supported by players using the hashtag #unrossoallaviolenza (a red card to violence) on their social media accounts.Napoli captain Marek Hamsik, who recently overtook Diego Maradona as the club's all-time top goalscorer, was pictured with the red mark alongside wife Martina Franova. As was Lazio striker Ciro Immobile, the league's current top goalscorer, who posted a photo with girlfriend Jessica Melena. 881
