SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A broken water main damaged a Santee street and flooded at least one nearby business early Friday morning.At around 3:45 a.m., authorities were called to Prospect Avenue and Cuyamaca Street in response to a water coming out of the roadway.The water blasted out of the street and flooded an auto repair business. At least six vehicles were partially submerged due to the rising water.By 4:15 a.m., authorities were able to shut off the water and begin road repairs.A city official said they believe the overnight temperature change may have caused the water main break.ABC 10News learned repairs are expected to last throughout the day.The public is asked to avoid the area of Prospect Avenue and Cuyamaca Street, as lanes have been closed. 772

(KGTV) - After seven years of planning and more than a year of construction, Mast Park in Santee is almost ready to reopen.The new park features all modern technology and brand new amenities, but planners wanted to make sure it kept its original feel of being surrounded by nature."If you think of Santee's parks along the river as a string of pearls, this one was the oldest and needed some polishing," says Bill Maertz, the City of Santee's Director of Community Services."We've kept the feel of the natural park," he adds. "So we have a brand new park here, but we've got 100-year-old trees here."The park's new features include three picnic shelters, a larger parking lot with electric car charging stations, three larger dog parks, a nature discovery play area, a forest-themed playground, a new basketball court, and an enhanced disc golf course.There are also more than 100 new trees planted throughout the 80-acre park, as well as native and drought-resistant landscaping."A portion of the park is part of the San Diego River Trail. So we wanted to keep that natural experience along the river," says Maertz.Multiple public meetings also showed that the community wanted to help kids build a connection to nature through the park."Children have a nature deficit disorder, there's too much time with screens, TVs and stuff," says Maertz. "So, we're trying to get them reconnected back to nature."The park will also have an active storm-water drainage system that runs through it like a river. Water runoff from nearby apartment complexes and businesses will filter through the park, with natural elements helping to clean it and block debris and trash from entering the San Diego River. The city built 12 bridges in the park to let people walk over the runoff areas like they're walking through a forest."The only reason we have 12 bridges is that we didn't have room for 13," jokes Maertz.The park will also have new bathrooms and a concession stand. SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle's police chief says she will retire. The move was reported Monday, the same day the City Council approved reducing the department through layoffs and attrition. The cuts were supported by demonstrators who have marched in the city following the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. The reductions were strongly opposed by the mayor and police chief. KING-TV reported that Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best, the city's first Black police chief, told the department of her decision in a letter, saying her retirement will be effective Sept. 2. “I am confident the department will make it through these difficult times,” Best said in the letter. “You truly are the best police department in the country, and please trust me when I say, the vast majority of people in Seattle support you and appreciate you. ... I look forward to seeing how this department moves forward through the process of re-envisioning public safety. SAN YSIDRO (CNS) - A body was found Wednesday morning near a San Ysidro intersection, police said.Dispatchers received a report of the body around 3:30 a.m. near the intersection of Smythe Avenue and Sunset Lane, San Diego police Officer Dino Delimitros said.No details about the victim were immediately available.The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office was called to the scene to take custody of the body for autopsy and identification purposes.Homicide detectives were investigating the circumstances leading up to the death. 542

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona — It's not paper or plastic that's taking over a Scottsdale, Arizona recycling center — it's trash. Every day at Republic Services workers line a conveyer belt scouring for items that don't belong. But the belts are moving slower than they used to. That's because so much trash has been moving through, workers need more time to pick it out. "A cushion like this, not recyclable," Richard Coupland with Republic Services said. "Baby seats, not recyclable." But it's not just time-consuming. Coupland said when you put things that don't belong into a recycle bin, it can contaminate the other items that do belong. In return, that produces more trash. "Focus on your fundamental material, but most importantly that it's empty, clean and dry," he said. Fundamental material includes paper, plastic, aluminum and cardboard. However, if you're recycling a ketchup bottle, it must be completely empty and rinsed out. All the trash coming through the center is also costing more money. Coupland said China was at one time one of the largest buyers of recyclable material. However, the center has stopped shipping items there. "They've lowered their acceptable criteria from 3 percent to .5 percent," Coupland said. "That's a level that few folks are able to achieve right now without making significant changes to their operation." That's forcing the company to sell all it's paper, plastic, and aluminum to different markets, at a cost. "Those markets are not able to pay the same value for the material," Coupland said.In return, that can cost you more when it comes to pick up fees. However, you can help by being conscious about what you put in your bin. "Many don't realize that the bottom of a pizza box which is contaminated with grease of a pizza, that's trash," Coupland said. "No one is interested in buying that. So the proper thing to do is rip the box, give me the top and throw away the bottom."  2052
