SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For the first time in over two decades, there will be a new San Diego County Supervisor for District 1. Nora Vargas will be the first Latina to ever serve on the Board of Supervisors. The Democrat will take over for Supervisor Greg Cox, who is termed out. She beat her Democratic opponent, state Sen. Ben Hueso, by roughly 13%. Nora Vargas, a Chula Vista resident, said her background is in health care and education. She's served on the board at Southwestern College since 2013; she's been board president since 2018. She's also an executive at Planned Parenthood. Vargas said her top priority as she heads into office is the COVID-19 pandemic. District 1 primarily serves the South Bay, which is one of the areas hardest hit by the pandemic in the entire county. "For me, it’s really important that we find a balance -- how do we make sure that our small businesses are thriving, that they stay open but at the same time that our communities are healthy and safe? That has to be a priority," explained Vargas. Vargas was born in Tijuana and raised in Chula Vista where she became a U.S. citizen. As the first Latina to serve on the board, she hopes she won't be the last. "I see that as a big responsibility but also as a great opportunity to have dialogue about the issues that really matter for our communities," said Vargas. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For decades Veterans Village of San Diego has been committed to serving homeless veterans, aiding in transitional housing and rehabilitation. In recent years, however, they've been struggling to fill vacant beds."Over the last several years, we've just seen a change in the environment. There's a lot of resources here in San Diego for homeless veterans. The number of veterans who've wanted to come through our programs has decreased," said Kim Mitchell, President and CEO of Veterans Village. "Some just aren't ready, as you know there's are a lot of homeless here in San Diego, not only veterans but non-veterans, people are in various stages of where they are in life."Now the nonprofit hopes to welcome non-veterans into two of their programs: County-funded Drug Medi-Cal and the transitional housing program. "There is a lot of people that want to get off the street and want to go through a program to get clean and sober, and so if we have beds in this program that can help them do that we want to do that," said Mitchell.Mitchell says they have full support from the Housing Commission and the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs.Leaders will ask City Council on Tuesday to approve the request. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Dozens of families and children with down syndrome were out at Crown Point Park in Pacific Beach for the first-ever Donut Run in San Diego. The money raised benefits Gigi's Playhouse which is a down syndrome achievement center. The center provides therapeutic and training programs for people of all ages. The services are completely free. Gigi's Playhouse has 37 locations across the country and even a few in Mexico. All of the staff are volunteers so donations are always welcome in order to continue providing the services. The goal was to raise ,000 but the organization doubled that goal.   667

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Firefighters responded after a fire broke out in an abandoned building in San Diego’s Lincoln Park neighborhood Saturday morning. The fire started inside a building on Ocean View Boulevard and 47th Street around 9:30 a.m. Large plumes of black smoke could be seen from miles away. The building that caught fire is owned by a nearby church. According to a church official, the building was used to help house the homeless. The official told 10News the church recently told those staying in the building they had to leave after several incidents.At this time, it’s unclear what started the fire or if anyone was injured. "This fire has been stopped. Crews will be here for a few hours. Please use caution if you are in the area but take alternate routes if possible," San Diego Fire-Rescue said in a Tweet. 833
