Often as long-winded and cumbersome as its title, "The Personal History of David Copperfield" sputters at times but manages to make you feel good while you're sort of bored.In many ways, it's the ideal pandemic movie. The timeless, Job-like tale follows a put-upon man who is subject to one ludicrously unfair situation, managing to thrive by maintaining his faith in himself.Director Armando Iannucci ("In the Loop," "The Death of Stalin") has a clear love for the 1850 Charles Dickens source material. Maybe he has too much reverence for every laborious twist and turn of the gigantic novel, which seems more comfortable in a miniseries format rather than a tight two-hour package.You could hardly dream up a better cast. Dev Patel thrives in the lead role as adult David, granting him a can-do attitude that makes him easy to get behind amid all the challenges he faces.Hugh Laurie is deliciously cantankerous as the ne'er do well Mr. Dick, and Tilda Swinton is regal as Betsey Trotwood, whose own riches-to-rags tale echoes that of David.The producers assembled a refreshingly diverse cast to tell the old tale, and the choices largely make sense in historical context. Played by a man of Indian descent, the subtle racism and structural disadvantages David faces are all the more searing and impactful when they're based not on happenstance but partially on skin color.If only the story itself was injected with such reimagination. While the costumes and set design are exquisite, there's a stolid and creaky feel to the show that recalls a stuffy theatrical repertory production. Even at its best, Dickens is dense and bulky, and without much effort to recast and slim down the storylines for modern times, it's easy to get hopelessly lost amid the barrage of plodding plot developments.Despite its flaws, the film is a welcome sight for sore, theater-deprived moviegoers jonesing for a reason to grab a soda and bucket of popcorn and get back to the old routine. On the corner of South Park Street and West 16th in Little Rock, Arkansas, sits a bus bench.To the untrained eye, it is nothing more than some wood and concrete, but to the students at Central High School across the street, it is a reminder of the racism our country has faced.In 1957, Central became the first high school in a major U.S. city to desegregate when nine black students were escorted through crowds of white students by the National Guard so they could attend class.One of those black students, Elizabeth Eckford, was mercilessly heckled as she approached the school. So much so, that she turned away and retreated to that bus bench as a safe haven while she waited for a ride home."Even though it’s history, it didn’t happen too long ago,” said Adaja Cooper, who graduated from Central High School last year.Years after the 1957 Little Rock Nine crisis, the bus bench Eckford had sat on was removed for no particular reason. In the decades that followed, most did not bat an eye, until Cooper, a black student, was in her junior year of high school and wanted to recreate the piece of history as part of a school project known as The Memory Project.“It’s not just the story of building a bench, but the retelling of the history,” said Cooper. “It created a bond, and it’ll last for the rest of my life.”With the help of sophomore Milo Williams Thompson and history teacher George West, Cooper began pouring concrete, cutting wood, and reassembling the bench.It was not the first piece of history recreated by The Memory Project, but it was the most technical."It was supposed to be a one year project, and we couldn’t stop after we saw the experiences the students were having,” West said.By 2018, when Cooper was a senior and Williams Thompson was a junior, the bench was completed and placed on the corner once occupied by the original. For the students, it marked an achievement in craftsmanship, as well as personal growth."It’s that relationship that students begin to create, build, and experience beyond just the small universe that they arrive in,” said West. “They have a voice in the community.""We have to recognize that racism didn’t end in the 60s,” added Williams Thompson. “It’s still around and it’s still a national problem.”The Memory Project has created walking tours that supplement the ones taken by tourists at the Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site. (KGTV) -- A 63 year old man is grateful to be alive Saturday night after his sailboat capsizes and he was left swimming for his survival.Andrea Aria was on a trip back from Catalina, “I’m alive for the grace of God. Aria sat down with 10 News and talked about the horrific details, “I didn’t even see the wave until I made the turn and it was too late it was up on me”. The wave tipped the boat, he tried holding on, “I let go and went back in the water and I went under the boat and the boat went over me once then twice and the propellers are going”.During that moment he didn’t realize the injuries he was getting, “I didn’t feel, the adrenaline the cold water the salt all I know I couldn’t move my fingers I knew my hands were messed up “. Two casts on his hands because doctors say, he cut tendons leaving his fingers unable to move. The propeller on his boat also gashed his foot leaving him with 28 stitches.He swam about a half mile to shore, “every two strokes I was getting hit with a wave and I’m submerging and I’m having trouble handling it” Aria tells us.He says just as he was about to give up, his foot hit the sand and he crawled his way to the beach, “I finally made it and there were two police men and they said someone called us must have been an angel”.Saturday night, Aria is thankful to be alive, but he’s now realizing just how much he lost, along with his boat, “the things that I need to function everyday, they’re gone, they’re all gone” he continued, “I’m really without anything at this moment”.He’s now left to depend solely on his faith, “it wasn’t my time, I guess when its your time its your time. OCEANSIDE (CNS) - A fire at an Oceanside home early this morning displaced four people, but no one was injured, fire officials said today.Around 11:30 p.m. Friday, dispatchers received a report of a fire at a home in the 4000 block of Marcella Street, which is just west of College Boulevard and south of Oceanside Boulevard, according to the Oceanside Fire Department.Crews arrived and initially believed the fire was contained to a sunroom that had been added onto the home in the backyard, officials said.However, firefighters found out the fire had actually engulfed the kitchen and spread to the attic.  The fire was out about 30 minutes after crews first arrived, officials said.A family of four adults was displaced and the American Red Cross helped with providing them shelter.A fire department investigator will look into the cause of the blaze, officials said. 888

On its website Friday, the bureau listed the deadline for processing data used to apportion the districts as Dec. 31. As recently as Thursday, it had listed a time frame of Oct. 31, 2020 to April 30, 2021 — an estimate based on a request for an extension that it submitted to Congress in April.The request passed the Democratic-controlled House as part of coronavirus-relief legislation but is now stalled in the Senate. The chamber’s inaction coincides with a memorandum Trump issued last week to try to exclude people living in the U.S. illegally from being included during the process for redrawing congressional districts.Civil rights activists worry the sped-up deadline could affect the thoroughness of the count. The census determines how .5 trillion in federal spending is distributed and how many congressional districts each state gets.
