COVID-19 has killed more than 50,000 people in nursing homes and long-term care facilities. That is at least 40% of all U.S. coronavirus deaths.The White House put in new measures recently to better protect residents.“The numbers are continuing to rise. We're just beginning to get some of the numbers out of some of the states and so this is a real outrage,” said Bill Sweeney, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs at AARP. “It didn't have to be this way, and this is a national disgrace.”AARP says required virus case data from facilities is happening too late. They're about a week behind and testing isn't consistent.Some facilities are still having issues with PPE, including training staff to wear it properly.Both Republicans and Democrats want to give more help to nursing homes in the next relief bill.AARP is concerned about the lack of inspections and oversight. It worries some facilities will get immunity from lawsuits.“Without inspections, without the ombudsman being able to go in and find out what’s going on in the facilities, without family visits being allowed, there's been no accountability at all and if they give immunity to these nursing homes, there won’t ever be accountability,” said Sweeney. “There will never be justice for families whose loved ones were treated poorly.”Before the pandemic, AARP says eight out of ten nursing homes were cited for infection control problems.Meanwhile, AARP encourages family members to call their representative in Congress if they are worried about their loved one and are not getting answers. 1573

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Cincinnati Reds and Fox Sports Ohio broadcaster Thom Brennaman tells WCPO he has resigned from his position more than one month after he was suspended for using a homophobic slur on air.“My family and I have decided that I am going to step away from my role as the television voice of the Cincinnati Reds,” Brennaman wrote to WCPO. “I would like to thank the Reds, Reds fans, and the LGBTQ community for the incredible support and grace they have shown my family and me.“Brennaman has been suspended from the Cincinnati Reds since the Aug. 19 incident. He had been with the Reds since 2006.“I have been in this profession that I love for 33 years,” he wrote. “It is my hope and intention to return. And if I'm given that opportunity, I will be a better broadcaster and a much better person.“WCPO reached out to the Cincinnati Reds and Fox Sports Ohio for comment."The Reds respect Thom Brennaman’s decision to step away from the broadcast booth and applaud his heartfelt efforts of reconciliation with the LGBTQ+ community," team CEO Bob Castellini wrote in a statement. COLLEGE AREA (KGTV) - A former San Diego State University student was arrested for arson on Saturday, according to university police.Madelyn Delarosa is reportedly connected to a string of fires within the College Area. Campus police arrested Delarosa on Saturday morning after, they say, she started a fire in a parking garage. The fire reignited Saturday night. Students were evacuated from the Granada on Hardy Apartments both times. Police say Delarosa's crimes started on Thursday, March 14th, around 11 a.m., when a university police officer spotted a parked vehicle on fire near the 5500 block of Hardy Avenue. The officer successfully extinguished the fire, police said. There were no injuries.Officers were then notified of another fire involving the exterior door of an apartment in the 5600 block of Hardy Avenue, according to a police press release. That fire was extinguished before crews arrived and no one was injured.On Friday, March 15th, at around 8:30 a.m., community members notified police of another fire involving an apartment near the 5500 block of Montezuma Road. There were no injuries, and the fire went out on its own. Delarosa was arrested for possession of arson materials, arson of an inhabited structure, and arson to property. The motive is still under investigation. 1309
