CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The man suspected of robbing a South Bay credit union was arrested following a crash Wednesday afternoon. According to Chula Vista Police, a man entered the Cal Coast Credit Union on the 300 block of East H Street around 2 p.m. Wednesday. Police say the man approached the teller window with his hand in his pocket simulating a weapon and demanded cash from the employee. After receiving the cash, the suspect left the credit union, getting into a getaway vehicle. Police were able to locate suspect based on vehicle information provided by a customer at the credit union. Officers spotted the vehicle going eastbound on H Street and tried to pull the suspect over, but he didn’t stop instead leading police on a chase. At some point during the chase, police say the man ran a red light on Otay Lakes Road, slamming into another vehicle. Both the suspect and victim in the crash were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police haven’t yet released the name of the suspect but say he is under arrest for the bank robbery and felony evasion. 1100

CHULA VISTA, Calif (KGTV) -- As Chula Vista continues to grow, so does the need for police officers in the city. Last June, voters approved a half cent sales tax increase, giving Chula Vista the highest sales tax in San Diego County. The money goes into the general fund, but os designated for hiring more police and firefighters. Despite the new sales tax, some business owners say they are still having issues with the department's response times. A bakery owner on Third Avenue tells 10News she sometimes has to call police multiple times a week to report a crime, but that sometimes police don't show up or shows up hours after the crime. Captain Phil Collum says the department has hired nine of the 12 officers currently allowed by Measure A. According to SANDAG, crime in Chula Vista is actually down 3 percent in 2019, including property and violent crimes. "Sometimes the perception that crime is on the rise or perception that things feel less safe than they were, in fact all of the data suggests otherwise," said Collum. In a recent survey, 91 percent of Chula Vistans said they are "very satisfied" with the department, despite not meeting response times for priority one and priority two calls. Collum said those response times are slowly improving. The police department says additional positions will be filled through the Measure A sales tax, meaning 31 additional officers by 2023. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Sweetwater Union High School District is tightening its belt on the budget. On the table is a plan to not replace dozens of positions and cut bus routes. Critics say the move could leave hundreds of students without a ride to school. The board meets Tuesday night to finalize the plan to save money. One of the biggest moves on the table is not replacing some 80 positions within the district. Positions on the chopping block include assistant superintendent positions and nine bus drivers. No one within the district will be at risk of losing their jobs. Instead, the positions won’t be replaced after employees retire. Roughly 300 employees already chose to take an early retirement. The district also plans to eliminate 30 bus routes next school year that will save half a million dollars per year. Four of the districts 13 high schools will be affected by the route cuts. Several parents say they were blindsided by the news. "Out here we have year round schooling, so schools going to be starting for us in July. That’s just a couple months to figure out for parents that are working how they're going to change their schedules and if they can't then these kids are left to fend for themselves,” said Sara McIntosh. The district says Sweetwater is one of a few districts that still offers bus service. Many districts cut it years ago when the state stopped requiring it. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police are looking for three people who tried to steal an ATM from outside a Mexican restaurant in Chula Vista Tuesday morning.According to the Chula Vista police, at around 5 a.m., three men were seen ripping the machine from the ground outside the restaurant in the 2500 block of Main Street, near Broadway.The trio tried to load the ATM onto the back of a large flatbed truck, but it fell off. They struggled to get the machine back on the truck and eventually gave up.Witnesses told police they saw the three men run away down Main Street.Police say the ATM was heavily damaged, but it doesn’t seem like they got away any money. The truck was believed to be stolen.Police are hoping nearby surveillance video will help in the investigation. 782
