SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A company with offices in Oceanside released data Friday supporting its drug remdesivir is helping severely ill COVID-19 patients recover.The data released by Gilead, who produces remdesivir, states there was a 62% reduction in risk of death, compared to patients who weren't given the drug, and 74% of remdesivir treated patients recovered by Day 14.Remdesivir was originally created to fight Ebola, a similar virus to COVID-19.Troy Kahle was diagnosed with COVID-19 and said he's alive today because of Kaiser Permanente doctors, nurses and remdesivir.He said he was admitted to the hospital March 14, and ended up in a coma for 12 days."The first memory I have is waking up with my hands strapped to the gurney and a tube down my throat," Kahle said he thought he was going to die and wishes no one to face what still haunts him.Friday he celebrated three months out of the hospital as a survivor of COVID-19.While the drug has helped people like Kahle, medical experts are wary."It's not a magic bullet," Molecular Biology Professor at UC San Diego Stephen Hedrick, PhD. said.He said the drug slows down the virus."It's going to decrease the severity of the symptoms of the viral infection, but it doesn't necessarily make you well overnight," he said comparing it to an antibiotic.This is because while the drug works to stop the virus from replicating, COVID-19 can counter it, "Coronaviruses, almost uniquely among RNA viruses, have an error correction capability."Survivors like Kahle, while thankful to be out of the hospital, aren't back to 100%."I get easily winded if I overexert myself, occasionally I'll get dizzy for no reason, I have foot pain when I wake up," Kahle said.Hedrick said he is optimistic, adding the drug is a good jumping off point to create a drug more suited to coronavirus, or a vaccine.In the mean-time both Kahle and Hedrick ask that we all wear our masks."If we all work together we can get to the other side of this pandemic," Kahle said.Gilead said they are ramping up supplies, "we have increased supply nearly 40-fold since January and our goal is to produce more than 2 million treatment courses by year-end and several million in 2021, if required."Gilead cautions that rigorous clinical trials are needed to confirm the latest data. 2303

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - With every other county in California reporting election results in 100 percent of precincts, San Diego County mysteriously lagged behind for more than 12 hours after polls closed Tuesday night.Riverside County's semi-final report of election results at 8:01 a.m. handed San Diego County the distinction of being the last county in the state without 100 percent of precincts reporting. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A driver heading the wrong-way on Interstate 805 died following a fiery crash with another vehicle Saturday.A Mitsubishi Lancer traveling the wrong-way on southbound I-805 near the I-8 connector collided with a Toyota SUV just before 3 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol. The collision sparked a fire, engulfing both vehicles, CHP said.Both drivers were transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to California Highway Patrol. The wrong-way driver later died. Another vehicle received minor damages in the wreck. That driver received minor injuries.CHP was still investigating where the wrong-way driver entered the freeway. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Weather forecasters are warning of "near-critical fire weather conditions" Sunday evening through Tuesday morning in San Diego County because of developing Santa Ana winds."Areas west of the mountains will see a sharp rise in temperatures early this week," the National Weather Service said, "with coastal locations potentially experiencing their hottest conditions so far this year."Inland areas and especially deserts will remain very warm through Thursday, the NWS said, before widespread cooling takes hold late in the week.Early morning satellite images showed widespread clouds extending to the coastal slopes, but much thinner than Saturday and with less uniform coverage, forecasters said. With clouds breaking up, clearer skies Sunday afternoon will allow temperatures to rise several degrees higher than on Saturday.Santa Ana winds will strengthen on Monday, with maximum gusts of 40 to 45 mph as humidity plummets, resulting in elevated fire weather conditions, the NWS said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 91-year-old La Jolla resident is the first confirmed case of West Nile virus of the year in the county.The man was hospitalized with encephalitis in September but was confirmed Thursday to have the virus by the California Department of Public Health.He has been discharged from the hospital and is recovering, according to the county.RELATED: Community gives gift of mobility to young West Nile survivorThe man had not traveled outside of the county within the month prior to becoming ill, leading officials to believe the mosquito bite was local.Mosquitos trapped near the man's home tested negative for West Nile by the county Department of Environmental Health.
