SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A five-vehicle pileup at a College Area intersection left two young women severely injured and sent four others drivers to the hospital, police said Thursday. The crash was reported around 9:10 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of 70th Street and El Cajon Boulevard, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A 63-year-old man driving a 2016 Mercedes E400 eastbound on El Cajon Boulevard suffered an unknown medical issue and slammed into the back of a 2015 Ford Fusion sitting in the northbound turn lane to 70th Street, Buttle said. The impact pushed both vehicles into the westbound lanes, where they were both struck by three vehicles -- a Nissan Rogue SUV, a BMW and a Honda Civic, the officer said. At that point, the Ford caught fire, leaving two 22-year-old women trapped inside before witnesses pulled them from the car. Both women suffered second- and third-degree burns over 70% of their bodies, along with uncontrolled internal bleeding, Buttle said. They were taken to a hospital for treatment of their injuries, which were considered life-threatening.The Mercedes driver was taken to a hospital for treatment of unknown injuries, Officer Tony Martinez said. The Nissan driver, a 20-year-old woman, the BMW driver, a 63-year-old man, and the Honda driver were taken to local hospitals for treatment of minor injuries, Buttle said.No details about the Honda driver were immediately available. 1427

SAN DEIGO (KGTV) -- As the migrant caravan makes its way through Mexico, local attorneys and shelters in Tijuana are monitoring their progress, in case the immigrants arrive at the Tijuana and San Diego border. The group Federal Defenders of San Diego worked illegal entry cases during the last caravan in April. Kara Hartzler is one of their attorneys, she says theirs already a daily backlog with immigration cases and this caravan will further overwhelm the system.Hartzler says many immigrants from April's caravan are still in the asylum process.  It's estimated the new caravan is 4,000 to 7,000 immigrants in size, roughly three times bigger than the one in April. In Tijuana, shelters are having meetings to prepare for the possibility of a large arrival. In a series of tweets Monday morning, President Trump called the latest caravan a "national emergency" and threatened to cut off aid to certain Central American countries, adding that he's already alerted Border Patrol and the military.  1038

SAN DIEGO  – The affidavit accusing San Diego County Congressman Duncan Hunter and his wife, Margaret, of prohibited use of campaign contributions provides shocking details about how the couple allegedly spent the money and covered it up.The grand jury's indictment accused Hunter and his wife of misusing campaign funds on everything from vacations to tequila shots at a restaurant. The affidavit says the Hunters made purchases with campaign funds including more than ,000 for a family trip to Italy, more than ,300 for purchases at Costco, and more than ,000 for airline tickets and hotel rooms for their family and friends.Numerous alleged charges also cover amounts in the hundreds at grocery and retail stores and restaurants, including one charge in 2015 at Disneyland totaling 9.44 for Minnie Mouse Ear headbands and apparel, and another in 2016 for "30 tequila shots and one steak" totaling 2.46 at a restaurant. 983

SAN DIEGO — Democratic Congressman Mike Levin appears poised to keep his seat in the House of Representatives, according a scientific poll released Tuesday. The ABC-10News Union-Tribune poll showed Levin ahead of Republican Brian Maryott 49 to 37 in the 49th Congressional District, which stretches from Del Mar into southern Orange County. Levin, a first-term Congressman, defeated Republican Diane Harkey in 2018, flipping the seat longheld by Republican Darrell Issa, who decided not to seek re-election amid changing voter demographics. "We're going to do everything we can to leave no stone unturned for the next 50 days or so to make sure that we keep the 49th this coming November," Levin said. Democrats now outnumber Republicans in the district by about 3 percent. The SurveyUSA poll shows, however, that 13 percent of Republicans surveyed said they planned to vote for Levin. Meanwhile, just 2 percent of Democrats said they'd support Maryott. "If it was 25 percent or higher I would say something's going on," said political analyst John Dadian. "(Levin's) been an incumbent for two years, his challenger is an elected official but not in a good majority of the region."Maryott said it was still early in the race and that he and his campaign are working to get their message out. "People are just really starting to tune in now. Obviously Mike has name recognition that we don't, but we're out there talking to people everyday," said Maryott. Maryott said he would continue to push a message that Levin is to the extreme left of the Democratic Party. Levin said he expects attacks like that this campaign season but stands by his record. The SurveyUSA poll was conducted between Sept. 11 and Sept. 14, of 517 likely voters, with a margin of error of 5.8 percent. 1782
