(AP) — California moved Friday to eliminate climate-changing fossil fuels from its fleet of 12,000 transit buses, enacting a first-in-the-nation mandate that will vastly increase the number of electric buses on the road.The California Air Resources Board voted unanimously to require that all new buses be carbon-free by 2029. Environmental advocates project that the last buses emitting greenhouse gases will be phased out by 2040.While clean buses cost more than the diesel and natural gas vehicles they will replace, say they have lower maintenance and fuel costs. Supporters hope creating demand for thousands of clean buses will bring down their price and eventually other heavy-duty vehicles like trucks.California has 153 zero-emission buses on the road now with hundreds more on order. Most of them are electric, though technology also exists for buses powered by hydrogen fuel cells."Every state could do a strategy like this," said Adrian Martinez, an attorney for Earthjustice, an environmental legal group that supports the rule. "This is something that California did first because we have major air quality and pollution problems, but this is something other states could pursue."Existing state and federal subsidies are available to help transit agencies absorb some of the higher costs of carbon-free buses, along with money from the state's settlement with Volkswagen over the German automaker's emission-cheating software.In approving the mandate, air board members cited both a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and improved air quality along heavily trafficked transit corridors in smog-polluted cities.The transportation sector accounts for 40 percent of California's greenhouse gases, and those emissions are rising even as electrical emissions have fallen substantially.California needs to drastically reduce transportation emissions to meet its aggressive climate change goals.The California Transit Association, a lobbying group, does not oppose electrifying the fleet but is concerned that zero-emission buses can't match the performance of the existing fleet and that there isn't enough money available for the transition, said Michael Pimentel, who is leading the organization's work on the issue."We do want to work alongside the Air Resources Board and our partners at the state and federal level to address these concerns and to ultimately achieve the goal of fully electrified fleets by 2040," Pimentel said. 2471

It can also be another way to share information about your health."With its largely female user base, Pinterest represents an opportunity for spreading credible information and communicating about health, especially women's health issues such as breast cancer, breast cancer prevention, and screening," said Carrie A. Miller, Ph.D., M.P.H., a postdoctoral fellow at the Virginia Commonwealth University's School of Medicine Massey Cancer Center and Department of Health Behavior and Policy.Miller led the Pinterest research study looking at how breast cancer information is communicated on the social media platform.VCU researchers analyzed a sample of 500 Pinterest posts which are referred to as pins. They were collected using Pinterest keywords such as breast cancer."We focused specifically on who posted the pin, the type of visual and textual information included in the pins as well as how users engaged with those pins. Whether those posts were repinned or saved or commented on," Miller said.The research found the posts were mostly text rather than posts of several pictures. Roughly 20 percent seem to come from everyday people."Individuals, Pinterest users just like you or me were posting. Often times, personal narratives, stories about breast cancer, their personal experience with the disease," Miller said.Dr. Miller says these posts can be used to empower the reader and encourage healthcare organizations to join the conversation.She also says if you have specific questions, always have a discussion with your doctor.Miller and her team are working on other social media studies. The 66-year-old would be the third Black person to serve on the court if he is confirmed by the Commission on Judicial Appointments.Jenkins would replace Justice Ming W. RICHMOND, Va. – A military veteran who died of a heart attack while onboard a Richmond city bus was robbed while unconscious. Several burobbed while unconsciouss riders jumped in to help the man while he went into cardiac arrest, but they ultimately got off the bus, with the exception of one.Police say 20-year-old Demontea Chappell stayed behind under the guise of giving aid but was seen on camera taking the man's wallet.A video reveals the heartbreaking details."Pop? What you name is Pop?" said a young man, as the older bus passenger struggled unconsciously and not breathing."Trying to find his wallet. Where the wallet at?" that young man continues.Chappell, according to police, was acting as if he was giving aid to the Air Force veteran, but the bus video showed he went inside the man’s wallet and then slid the cash into his own pocket.Sources told WTVR's Jon Burkett that the veteran always carried cash, but how much money he had that day was unknown.Police now have a warrant for Chappell's arrest.The veteran died on the bus near the corner of First and Federal last Thursday morning.Sources tell WTVR that after family members questioned why their loved one’s wallet was empty, officials with the Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC) went to the recordings and alerted police. The investigation led police to Chappell, who is still on the run.GRTC is helping police in this investigation.
