General Motors’ self-driving car company will attempt to deliver on its long-running promise to provide a more environmentally friendly ride-hailing service in an unorthodox vehicle designed to eliminate the need for human operators to transport people around crowded cities.The service still being developed by GM’s Cruise subsidiary will rely on a boxy, electric-powered vehicle called “Origin” that was unveiled late Tuesday in San Francisco amid much fanfare. It looks like a cross between a mini-van and sports utility vehicle with one huge exception — it won’t have any steering wheel or brakes. The Origin will accommodate up to four passengers at a time, although a single customer will be able summon it for a ride just as people already can ask for a car with a human behind the wheel from Uber or Lyft.For all the hype surrounding the Origin’s unveiling, Cruise omitted some key details, including when its ride-hailing service will be available and how many of the vehicles will be in its fleet. The company indicated it will initially only be available in San Francisco, where Cruise has already been offering a ride-hailing service that’s only available to its roughly 1,000 employees.By eliminating the need for a human to drive, Cruise theoretically will be able to offer a less expensive way to get around — a goal already being pursued by self-driving car pioneer Waymo, a Google spinoff that has been testing robotaxis in the Phoenix area for nearly three years.Cruise had planned to have a robotaxi service consisting of Chevrolet Bolts working without human backup drivers by the end of 2019, but moved away from that last year after one of Uber’s autonomous test vehicles ran down and killed a pedestrian in the Phoenix suburb of Tempe, Arizona, during 2018.Still aware of the fallout from that deadly crash, Cruise is promising “superhuman performance” from the Cruise, which GM hopes to manufacture at half the price of comparable vehicles using fuel-combustion engines. GM also expects to announce where the Origin will be made within the next few weeks, Cruise CEO Dan Amman said.The Origin won’t be sold to consumers though. “It is not a product you can buy, but an experience you share,” Amman said.The Origin represents another significant step for Cruise, which had only 40 employees when GM bought it in 2016 as part of its effort to catch up in the race to build cars that can drive themselves. Since then, Cruise has attracted more than billion from investors, including .75 billion from Honda and .25 billion from Japanese tech investment firm SoftBank. Honda also helped develop the Origin. GM currently values Cruise at billion, fueling speculation that the subsidiary may eventually be spun off as a publicly traded company.Whenever Cruise’s ride-hailing service makes its debut, it will still be chasing Waymo, whose work on self-driving car technology began inside of Google more than a decade ago. Waymo’s Phoenix-area service already has given more than 100,000 rides, according to the company. It expanded beyond the test phase service 13 months ago with a ride-hailing app that now has about 1,500 active monthly riders, Waymo says.By comparison, ride-hailing leader Uber now boasts about 103 million active monthly users with a service that relies on human drivers — a dependence that is the main reason the company has been losing money throughout its history. But if you’re just buying animal products, it may be hard to spot what’s legal and what’s not.“We have to make sure everything is correct and nothing is illegal,” Andreas Tsagas said. Andreas has owned his fur and leather shop for over two decades.“Most fur I have I buy from Europe,” he explained. He said he checks for tags that show what animal the fur came from, and where. “The people for wildlife check every coat.”He said if something killed illegally comes through an American port of entry, law enforcement takes it. “I like to be in business,” he said. “I make sure 100 percent everything is the way it needs to be.”“What is coming in, what is being trafficked, and what species are being represented,” Metzer said. “We do want to have a small slice of that so we can have that snapshot of what we see.”These furs and statues now serve a larger purpose, after spending some time in the warehouse.”For these materials they have the opportunity to have a second purpose,” she said. “Besides just being a former seized item, they’re going out to places like museums and science centers.”Education institutions can request certain items from the repository for educational purposes. 3412

  

FOND DU LAC, Wisc. — A woman says she was fired from her serving job at a local restaurant after he refused to serve guests she says were making transphobic remarks.Brittany Spencer worked as a server at Fat Joe's Bar & Grill in Fond du Lac for a few months. On Saturday night, she says some of the guests she was serving began making disparaging comments about gender identity while a transgender woman was in the bar."They were asking me if I thought it was disgusting and wrong and why we would let someone like that into the establishment," Spencer said. "To which I answered, no, I do not agree with that and walked away."According to ownership at Fat Joe's, both groups are regulars at the bar.Spencer says she went to her manager to ask if someone else could serve the table because she didn't feel comfortable."[My manager] essentially told me to suck it up or go home," Spencer said. "To which I said, OK. I will leave."Tad Wallender, one of the owners at Fat Joe's, says that despite what was said, his restaurant has a duty to serve all customers. Ownership with Fat Joe's also said that if an employee refused to serve a transgender person, they would send that server home for the same reason."We don't discriminate against anyone," Wallender said. "If you want to walk in our front door and you want to have our food or drinks, watch TV, watch live music we provide, we're going to serve you as best we can and make you happy to your standards."Wallender says since Spencer refused to serve the table, they sent her home for the night. He says they planned on having a conversation with her the next day about what happened.But before their conversation, Spencer took to Facebook to sound off about what happened. Her post generated more than a dozen comments.The next day, Spencer was told she was fired. So, she encouraged her followers to leave negative reviews on Fat Joe's Facebook page."If you feel this was wrong, leave a review on their business's Facebook page," Spencer said. "I was in awe by how many people were disgusted by this behavior and left comments to the point they deleted their Facebook page to keep the reviews from spreading."Wallender says Fat Joe's deleted its Facebook page temporarily because the social media conversation had become more about politics than about the restaurant. "It's people from New York, Kentucky, Texas, California who admit they've never been here before," Wallender said.Wallender says he will only refuse service to a customer for legal reasons. Among them:: If a patron is over-served, if a patron is underage or if a patron causing a disturbance that requires the patron be escorted out."We are going to serve anyone in here as long as it's a safe environment," Wallender said. "I've been in the service industry for a good 15 years and I've heard hundreds of conversations I didn't agree with but it's a matter of fact of brushing it off and having to tough it out through your task. She took her moral beliefs and hey, everyone has their moral beliefs. I'm not going to hold that against anyone else. She refused to do a duty we hired her for. That's the bottom line in a nutshell. If you're not going to do your duty, you don't have to work that night. We'll just send you home."But Spencer says there are certain things she just can't let go."Ignoring hate and ignoring people talking like that is not being neutral," Spencer said. "That's allowing hate to happen in your establishment and I didn't think that was appropriate so I left.
