WASHINGTON (AP) — No one budged at President Donald Trump's White House meeting with congressional leaders Wednesday, so the partial government shutdown persisted through a 12th day over his demand for billions of dollars to build a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico. They'll try again Friday.In one big change, the new Congress convenes Thursday with Democrats taking majority control of the House, and Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said outside the White House that there would be rapid passage of legislation to re-open the government — without funds for the border wall. But the White House has rejected that package, and Trump said ahead of the session with the congressional leaders that the partial shutdown will last "as long as it takes" to get the funding he wants."Could be a long time or could be quickly," Trump said during lengthy comments at a Cabinet meeting at the White House, his first public appearance of the new year. Meanwhile, the shutdown dragged through a second week, closing some parks and leaving hundreds of thousands of federal employees without pay.Democrats said they asked Trump directly during Wednesday's private meeting held in the Situation Room why he wouldn't consider their package of bills. One measure would open most of the shuttered government departments at funding levels already agreed to by all sides. The other would provide temporary funding for Homeland Security, through Feb. 8, allowing talks to continue over border security."I said, Mr. President, Give me one good reason why you should continue your shutdown," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said afterward. He complained that Democrats interrupted Homeland Security officials who were trying to describe a dire situation at the border."We were hopeful that we could get more of a negotiation," said McCarthy.He said the leaders plan to return to the White House Friday to continue negotiations.The two sides have traded offers, but their talks broke down ahead of the holidays. On Wednesday, Trump also rejected his own administration's offer to accept .5 billion for the wall. That offer was made when Vice President Mike Pence and other top officials met with Schumer at the start of the shutdown. Instead, on Wednesday Trump repeatedly pushed for the .6 billion he has demanded.Making his case ahead of the afternoon session with Democratic and Republican leaders, he said the current border is "like a sieve" and noted the tear gas "flying" overnight to deter arrivals."If they knew they couldn't come through, they wouldn't even start," Trump said at the meeting, joined by Cabinet secretaries and top advisers, including Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump.Trump complained that he had been "lonely" at the White House during the holiday break, having skipped his getaway to Mar-a-Lago in Florida. A spokesman for GOP leader Mitch McConnell said Republicans would not take action without Trump's backing.Even if only symbolic, passage of the bills in the House would put fresh pressure on the president. (KGTV) - A six-year-old Vista boy said he was approached by an unknown man in a car Monday night who asked him if he wanted pizza.Erika Bristow said her son was playing on their driveway when the man drove up and tried to get the boy’s attention.“He definitely realized immediately it wasn’t a safe situation,” Bristow said of her son, who ran inside to tell them about it.Her son has special needs and is normally very friendly, according to Bristow. So over the past year, she and her husband have been reinforcing the “stranger danger” lesson. Earlier this week they said the topic was even addressed during their son’s karate class.After his son told them about what happened, Craig Bristow said he ran out to the driveway to look for the car. He said he saw it up the street parked behind some trees before the driver sped back down the road.He said he caught a look at the car and the driver but was too distracted to take down the license plate.“All those thoughts are coming through your mind. It’s like a parent's worst nightmare,” he said.They called the sheriff’s Ddepartment, which sent out patrols, but they could not locate the car. The Bristows described the vehicle as a new, white Honda Civic hatchback with roof racks and a sunroof.The family said they did not get any pictures of the car and so far have not heard from any of their neighbors if the car was captured on surveillance cameras.Erika Bristow said the incident has shattered her sense of safety on their winding, quiet street in Vista.“One hour I’ll just cry. WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal appeals court said Thursday it plans to review a decision ordering the dismissal of the Justice Department’s case against former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn.The action by the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia is likely to prolong the fight over Flynn’s fate and represents yet another dramatic development in a case that has taken unexpected twists and turns over the last year and turned Flynn into something of a cause celebre for President Donald Trump and his supporters.Flynn pleaded guilty in 2017 to lying to FBI agents about his conversations with a Russian diplomat ahead of the inauguration of President Donald Trump.The court set arguments for Aug. 11. It did not offer an explanation for its decision in a brief order posted online, saying only "FURTHER ORDERED that oral argument before the en banc court be heard at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 11, 2020. WASHINGTON — President-elect Joe Biden introduced his picks for top health positions in his administration Tuesday, and listed three goals his administration will take to fight the COVID-19 pandemic in his first 100 days.The first of those goals has already been widely reported — Biden says he will ask American to "mask up" for the first 100 days of his administration. He said Tuesday that he will enact mask mandates where he can, like on federal property or on airplanes and other inter-state travel. But he said he's asking the rest of the country to join him in wearing masks even where they are not mandated.Biden also said Tuesday that he hopes to administer 100 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines in his first 100 days. In order to aid his administration in his goal, he says he hopes Congress can pass additional funding that would assist in distribution. Finally, Biden said he hopes to get as many children back into schools for in-person learning as he can within his first 100 days.Biden ended his remarks by reminding Americans that while a vaccine is coming, there are a few difficult months ahead."It's daunting, but I promise we will make progress starting on Day 1 ... we can beat this," Biden said.The health care team assembled by President-elect Joe Biden points to stronger federal management of the nation's COVID-19 response, a leading role for science and an emphasis on fair and equitable distribution of vaccines and treatments.With Monday's announcement of his health secretary and a half dozen other key officials Biden is aiming to leave behind the personal dramas that erupted under President Donald Trump. Walt Disney World has announced that the 2020 'Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party' at Magic Kingdom is canceled amid coronavirus concerns.Poor Jack Skellington, but at least there's Christmas, right? Well, maybe.Looking even further ahead, Disney said they are monitoring conditions for 'Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party' and the 'EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays,' including the Candlelight Procession. A decision on those events will be made later.Disney hopes to open the Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom parks on July 11, followed by Hollywood Studios and Epcot on July 15, but with new safety guidelines and limited crowds.The theme park will require employees and guests to wear masks and get temperature checks at park entrances.In order to keep capacity down, guests will need to make a reservation for park entry in advance.
