SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former San Diego County sheriff's deputy who fatally shot a fleeing detainee outside the downtown San Diego jail pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a second-degree murder charge.Aaron Russell, 23, is charged in the May 1 death of 36-year-old Nicholas Bils, who was unarmed and running away from officers when he was shot just outside the San Diego Central Jail, according to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office.The former deputy, who had been with the department for 18 months at the time of the shooting, surrendered to authorities on Monday, according to his attorney, Richard Pinckard.Russell, who resigned from the sheriff's department shortly after the shooting, faces 15 years to life in state prison if convicted of second-degree murder, and up to an additional 10 years if convicted of a firearm allegation.RELATED: Suspect who escaped park rangers' vehicle shot, killed by deputyBils had been arrested by rangers with the California Department of Parks and Recreation for allegedly threatening a ranger with a golf club at Old Town San Diego State Park. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 66-year-old man was hospitalized Saturday morning with wounds he suffered in a stabbing in the Mira Mesa neighborhood of San Diego and a 19-year-old suspect was in custody.The victim was walking in the area of Westview Parkway and Galvin Avenue about 9:10 p.m. Friday when he got into an argument with the suspect, who stabbed him three times, then ran away through the parking lot of a business, according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.The victim was stabbed in the chest and suffered cuts to his stomach and finger. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 44-year-old pedestrian was hit by a car and seriously injured in Mission Valley Saturday, police said.The unidentified man was walking in a crosswalk at about 5 a.m. on 2300 Camino Del Rio North when a 57-year-old driver of a Ford Explorer traveling northbound on Qualcomm Way turned eastbound and the vehicle hit the pedestrian.The man walking in the crosswalk suffered a possible skull fracture, several facial fractures and internal injuries. SAN CARLOS, Calif. (KGTV) -- A grandmother and several children were forced to run out of a San Carlos home that burst into flames Saturday night. The fire broke out on Park Ridge Boulevard in San Carlos around 10 p.m. Saturday. Fire crews were able to stop the flames from spreading to a nearby canyon. Neighbors say they heard what sounded like explosions before they ran out and saw the home on fire. A woman was home watching her grandchildren when the house caught fire. All those inside were able to make it out safely.
