A Florida man was arrested after police say he left his 19-month-old daughter outside overnight during Hurricane Irma.Angelo Mitchell, 36, of Jasper, Florida, faces a charge of child cruelty related to the Sunday incident.According to Tallahassee's WCTV, the girl's mother called police Monday morning, telling them Mitchell had taken their daughter away the night before and when she saw him again on Monday, the girl wasn't with him.Police searched the area for the girl but were unable to find her. Mitchell allegedly denied ever taking her, telling officers she was probably with a family friend, according to WCTV.At about 11:30 a.m. local time on Monday, someone found the girl in the yard of a house about 500 yards away.Police said the girl's skin had turned purple after she'd spent the entire night outside during the storm being battered by wind and rain. The girl also had scratches and bug bites on her body, according to WCTV. She was hospitalized for a day before being able to go back home.Mitchell appeared to be "under the influence of something," police reported, according to Tallahassee's WTXL.Clint Davis is a reporter for the Scripps National Desk. A Florida man is accused of attacking a Volusia County ambulance crew on the way to the hospital Sunday night. The paramedics told deputies that the suspect, David W. Parsons, 33, had been belligerent throughout the evening. The paramedic who was driving the ambulance said he looked in the rear-view mirror and saw Parsons getting off the stretcher and attacking the paramedic riding in the back. The ambulance driver said he pulled over, opened the back door and found Parsons with the paramedic in a choke hold. The driver said he then put Parsons in a choke hold until he released the other paramedic. Deputies said the altercation then spilled out of the ambulance. The sheriff's office said Parsons then attempted to run at them and into oncoming traffic, where the altercation continued.Deputy Micah Stoltz arrived and found Parsons putting a paramedic in a choke hold on the side of the road. The suspect was straddling one paramedic while the other was trying to pull him off.Stoltz had to use his stun gun after repeated commands to let go of the paramedic. The paramedics were in good condition after the attack and scuffle.Parsons was later medically cleared at Florida Hospital DeLand before being transported to the Volusia County Jail. He remained held Monday afternoon on ,000 bail, charged with two felony counts of battery on an EMT. 1387

A judge ruled Wednesday that President Donald Trump’s son Eric Trump must testify in a New York investigation into the family’s businesses before the November election. State Judge Arthur Engoron said Trump must comply with a subpoena for his testimony no later than Oct. 7. Eric Trump's lawyers had claimed his “extreme travel schedule” on the campaign trail warranted a delay. The judge said the investigation and the court are not “bound by the timelines of the national election.” Democratic State Attorney General Letitia James is investigating whether the Trump Organization lied about the value of its assets in order to get loans or tax benefits.“We will immediately move to ensure that Donald Trump and the Trump Organization comply with the court’s order and submit financial records related to our investigation," James said. "Further, Eric Trump will no longer be able to delay his interview and will be sitting down with investigators in my office no later than October 7. To be clear, no entity or individual is allowed to dictate how or when our investigation will proceed or set the parameters of a lawful investigation. The court’s order today makes clear that no one is above the law, not even an organization or an individual with the name Trump.” 1274

A majority of voters in Puerto Rico approved a non-binding referendum that supports elevating the island territory to statehood status. The referendum narrowly passed by a 52-48 margin. The question was not the first time voters weighed in on Puerto Rico statehood. Most recently, 97% of voters approved statehood in 2017, but the vote was boycotted by opposition parties.Several previous referenda were not a straight up statehood vote.Given Puerto Rico’s status, the territory does not vote on US senators or representatives, although the territory elects a non-voting member who can serve on committees. Puerto Rico also does not get a vote in the presidential general election, but the territory does get a say in the Democratic and Republican primaries. While Democrats would likely welcome the opportunity to make Puerto Rico a state, the likelihood of there being enough political support for Puerto Rico to be the 51st state is still doubtful. 956

A Democratic lawmaker walked out of a moment of silence for the Texas shooting victims on Monday night to protest a lack of action on gun safety after mass shootings in the United States.Rep. Ted Lieu of California, an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, said he walked out of the House chamber because he wants to pass a universal background check law, a ban on assault rifles and a ban on bump-fire stocks."My colleagues right now are doing a moment of silence," he said during a Facebook Live from the hallway. "I respect their right to do that and I myself have participated in many of them. But I can't do this again. I've been to too many moments of silences. Just in my short career in Congress, three of the worst mass shootings in US history have occurred. I will not be silent. What we need is we need action, we need to pass gun safety legislation now." 880
