While many think of NASA as the government agency that sends scientists into space, some of NASA’s most important work frequently is used to help people on Earth.In recent months, NASA has used its extensive network of scientists and researchers to combat the coronavirus. And in short order, the agency provided patients and healthcare providers with tools that may have been used to save lives.This week, NASA outlined a number of innovations the agency developed to support the fight against the virus.NASA created an open source for N95 respirators so people can make their own masks by using 3D printers. N95 respirators are unique as they protect the wearer from the virus. NASA’s designs were engineered to meet or exceed standard N95 performance, can be used for different purposes, are compatible with commercially-available filters, and do not disrupt the supply chain.If you have access to a 3D printer, here is how to create an N95 respirator designed by NASA.In addition to NASA’s open-source N95 respirators, the team from Johnson Space Center developed and tested a sterilization protocol to combat a national shortage of N95 masks. This allows N95 respirators to be reused by healthcare providers.“I had a very deep and personal connection to the evaluation (of N95 masks), because my wife is a medical professional… on the frontlines, with only one mask allocated for her to use and re-use daily,” said NASA engineer and project lead Jeremy Jacobs. “She has been very concerned about cross contamination between patient-to-patient and to our family.”Among other innovations, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California designed a new high-pressure ventilator tailored specifically to treat COVID-19 patients. While unofficial vote count totals show that Joe Biden has won the 2020 election and will become the 46th President of the United States, President Donald Trump has yet to concede. In fact, the Trump administration has so far blocked the transition process from getting underway.Trump has falsely claimed victory in the election on the unproven basis of widespread voter fraud. The campaign has filed several lawsuits in states where vote counts are tight, but it's unlikely that those lawsuits will result in a massive swing in votes needed to change the outcome of the election.However, there are a handful of Republican lawmakers that have recognized Joe Biden as the President-elect, and more still that have said the transition process should get underway while courts hear Trump's challenges.Below is a list of high-ranking Republicans currently in office that have congratulated Biden or called for the transition process to begin.Sen. Mike Rounds, South DakotaIn an interview with NBC News, Rounds, who won re-election earlier this month, did not directly respond to questions about Trump's claims of widespread voter fraud. However, he did say that "certain parts" of the transition team should "move forward."Sen. Marco Rubio, FloridaWhile Rubio has echoed the Trump administration's unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud, falsely claiming that Republicans should be suspicious about mail-in voting. Wildlife biologists with the Conservancy of Southwest Florida shared a shocking python find in Collier-Seminole State Forest on Thursday. An invasive Burmese python's eyes were a little bigger than its stomach when it decided to devour a white-tailed deer fawn. Officials say pythons have been known to kill and ingest large prey and this was a record breaking meal.  Officials stumbled upon the python with the massive prey inside. The biologists removed the python out of the wild into an open area and the python was stressed so it pushed the deer out of its mouth. In the photo below you can see the breathing tube and tongue of the python as it has its mouth wrapped around the deer. Biologists believe it is the largest python-to-prey ratio documented. The python was 31.5 pounds and the deer was 35 pounds; 111% of the python's mass. The findings will be published in the March 2018 issue of the Herpetological Review.“This observation is another important piece of evidence for the negative impact invasive Burmese pythons are having on native wildlife across the Greater Everglades Ecosystem” said Ian Bartoszek, Conservancy of Southwest Florida wildlife biologist. “Imagine the potential consequences to the state and federally protected Florida panther if Burmese pythons adversely affect the number of white-tailed deer, a panther’s primary prey.”Biologists are focused on the impact the python is having across the food chain. Since 2013, the Conservancy and its research partners have been conducting research to document the invasive Burmese python's biology and behavior in Collier County, including the tracking, removal and necropsy of captured pythons.Kelly Bazzle is the Digital Executive Producer at Scripps Station WFTS. When Hurricane Michael barreled through Florida's Mexico Beach, it reduced the beachside town to pile of rubble, mangled structures and splintered houses.These aerial images from NOAA offer a stark look at how there's nothing left in some parts where houses once stood.Most houses in the northern section of Mexico Beach, where the canal and marina start, aren't there anymore.The pier toward the bottom of the image, isn't either.Zooming in closer on the marina, the debris from houses is piled up on the northern shore of the canal.The boat moorings, gone. Will Power won the 102nd running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday afternoon, but another major story throughout the race was the number of crashes during the race.In all, there were seven different crashes involving eight different cars, after nearly 1/4 of the race had been run.
