Police in Paris have fired tear gas and used water cannon against protesters on the Champs Elysées, in the center of the French capital.The "yellow vest" protests, which began as a campaign against rising gas prices, have morphed into a wider demonstration against the government of President Emmanuel Macron in recent weeks.Police say they have mobilized 3,000 officers in Paris to contain the 8,000 protesters. A security perimeter has been set up in the city center, with government buildings protected. Parents are still confused about why dozens of Wisconsin students got sick in March.Jesse Coates's 13-year-old daughter went to the emergency room after passing out at the Oconomowoc Arts Center in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. She's one of the 200 students who mysteriously got sick at Oconomowoc High School and the Oconomowoc Arts Center in March."They were told that it was potentially a CO leak and that's why they were evacuating the building," Coates said.But the Oconomowoc Area School District said it wasn't carbon monoxide."There's just a lot of unanswered questions," Coates said. "You don't want to see it happen again," he said.Even other school districts have taken notice. After seeing the news, Wauwatosa decided to take action in case they ever do have a real carbon monoxide leak.Some schools in Wisconsin are installing CO2 detectors, even though they are not required by law."It's just one more step we can do to ensure the safety of our students," said Melissa Nettesheim, the manager of building and grounds for Wauwatosa School District.At about each and less than 10 minutes to install, Nettesheim said the district is putting at least one carbon monoxide detector in each of its buildings."All the alarms are in place in case carbon monoxide levels did reach a level that would require us to evacuate the building," Nettesheim said.She said that's never happened. And that it's a proactive measure not required by law.Wisconsin state law says "the owner of a residential building shall install a carbon monoxide detector in all of the following places."All of the listed locations are residential. Police said a two-year old boy died after ingesting medication at his grandmother’s house in Henrico County, Virginia Friday afternoon, according to WTVR-TV.Lt. Richard Brown with Henrico Police said the two-year-old swallowed up to 12 adult-dosage pills before he was transported to VCU Medical Center where he died.Officials said his body has been transported to the medical examiner’s office to determine his exact cause of death.When reporters arrived at the home Saturday, social services workers were inside investigating.The family’s spokesperson, Ricky Johnson, said he could not provide additional information since Kejon Edwards’ death is still under investigation.“We suffered a loss and we are just asking that you pray for this family and pray for this community,” said Johnson with the Ricky Johnson and Friends Foundation. “The family is asking for privacy right now, while we try to figure this out. Philadelphia Police have released 911 audio from an arrest at a local Starbucks that has prompted national outrage.The audio was uploaded to the Philadelphia Police's YouTube page on Tuesday. "Hi, I have two gentlemen in my cafe that are refusing to make a purchase or leave. I'm at the Starbucks at 18th and Spruce," a female caller tells at dispatch officer.The officer told the caller that police would be out "as soon as possible."The recording also included dispatches between officers. At one point, officers request "another unit along with a supervisor" for help dealing with a two men "causing a disturbance" at the coffee shop.Later, officers inform dispatch that they've made two arrests and are en route back to headquarters.Following the arrest, Starbucks would decline to press charges and the men would be released. The woman who called police was reportedly the manager of the store. She has "left the store" while Starbucks investigates the matter.Video of the arrest filmed by a customer at the shop has been shared thousands of times on social media and prompted a rebuke by the company's CEO. Yesterday, Starbucks announced it would close 8,000 company-owned stores on May 29 to conduct racial-bias education with its employees.  1302

Over the past month, Eric Janota’s garage has become a workshop.“Me personally, I've built around 25 desks,” he said.These desks are for kids who don't have them, kids who have been spending time doing school from home due to the pandemic.“We found out there was a huge need for them,” said Kim Gonsalves.Together, Gonsalves and Janota started Desks for Kids, their way of helping kids in need who are learning from home.“We first heard about it because Eric’s brother lives in Maryland, and we found out about Desks by Dads because his brother started building with Desks by Dads,” Gonsalves said.The Desks by Dads idea has inspired people across the U.S.“It’s like a group in Michigan, a group over her in another state that’s building desks, and it started with Desks by Dads and a lot of them reference Desks by Dads,” Gonsalves said.“I thought, I can build a dozen desks that seems a reasonable amount of time, effort and money. And I got into it and we started looking at the need and more than 200 desks were needed just for our little suburb,” Janota explained.So, they got to work.“We started just using our own money, just buying up some plywood and supplies and now it’s sort of grown a little bit,” Gonsalves said.With the help of monetary donations, wood donations, and others offering to build desks, they are now working with schools to deliver desks to those who need them most.“They're doing their distance learning all day long on the bed or on the floor,” Gonsalves said.Back at the beginning of the school year, when it became clear many students who went home in the spring still would not go back to face-to-face learning, economists saw kid desks and other supplies go out of stock. Now, as a second wave of COVID-19 sends students home again, the need is still great.“What we saw with desks was the same thing we saw with many other things,” said Mac Clouse, an economist and professor at the University of Denver. “The pandemic has created new markets for just more existing products that become more important in a pandemic.”Clouse said desks are a great example of people finding ways to fill supply needs when there’s a demand.“When we have a situation where there's a demand for the product and there's not enough being produced, then economic theory says suppliers will convert resources if they can and they'll produce what's necessary,” he said.And that’s exactly what these volunteer builders from across the U.S. are doing, using the resource available to help fill a need.“If you’re a family who needs a desk, you could contact your school and say are you in touch with any builders who are building desks and giving them away,” Gonsalves said. “Everyone can make a difference. If you have you can donate to a builder, they can make a desk for a kid.”As the desks are built, Janota and Gonsalves load them up and drive them off to where they are needed most.“To know that you're making just a little bit of a difference, because you wish you could help more. That student might need more than just a desk but this might just help this student be a little more successful this year,” Janota said.“Eric just started with a little idea. Maybe I can make a dozen desks and help some kids, and it’s just blossoming. To see the community pull together, it's really given me a lot of hope in a year that's been pretty terrible,” Gonsalves said. 3384
