SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- All evacuation orders and warnings have been lifted following a brush fire that erupted in San Diego's Talmadge neighborhood Tuesday afternoon. The fire started after 1 p.m. on Fairmont Avenue and Aldine Drive near Central Elementary School. The fire could be seen burning up a canyon in the area as smoke billowed into nearby neighborhoods. At times, flames came within 200 feet of homes. Evacuations were briefly ordered for Norma Drive, Constance Drive and Natalie Drive. The Hoover High School football field had been set up as a temporary shelter.RELATED: Check today's forecastThe fire also knocked out power to thousands in the area, but electricity was restored around 5 p.m. The fire sparked amid elevated fire weather concerns. Gusty offshore winds are expected in the mountains and foothills through Wednesday with afternoon humidity between 15 and 25 percent. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego woman who was shot at the Route 91 music festival in Las Vegas is making great strides in her recovery.Tina Frost and her boyfriend were with eight friends when Stephen Paddock opened fire. Frost was the only one of her group who was shot. The bullet went into her eye.Her family says the recovery has been difficult but that she continues to power forward with her therapies.Frost’s mother posted an update on the GoFundMe page indicating Frost has walked without assistance, thrown a ball, baked cookies, and painted an eye patch for herself.Amy Klinger, a close family friend, says Frost's strength and resilience is no surprise."She is not going to let anything get in her way of getting back to her normal, happy, and healthy life," said Klinger.  "It was so amazing, I walked into the room and she was talking with her physical therapist and because her sentences were so clear, I did forget for a minute she had not been speaking."A lifelong soccer player, Frost has even been able to kick a soccer ball to her dad in the hallway."The fact that they did say at the very beginning, let's see what happens in a year, and it's only less than five weeks out and she's walking and she's talking, she's just, the progress has been amazing and is a testament to who she is," said Klinger.Klinger believes the worldwide support and power of positivity has been a factor in the healing, for both Frost and her family."Just knowing there's this enormous community, Team Tina, that's out there behind the family, it keeps their spirits up and keeps them positive because this is a lot to do deal with," said Klinger.Frost has a big surgery in the upcoming weeks where doctors will begin facial reconstruction. 1749

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman who was hit by a car in Normal Heights says she’s been left stranded for six months after her wheelchair was damaged in the crash. Now, replacing it is a challenge. Pet photographer Tamandra Michaels’ love for the camera came to a pause after she was hit from behind while crossing the street.“It sent me flying," Michaels said. The wreck damaged her custom wheelchair, which cost more than ,000.“It slightly bent the frame to where one of the front wheels don’t quite hit the ground.” Michaels says Geico, the insurance company of the woman who hit her, won’t replace the wheelchair after giving them proof the chair must be replaced.“Months went by, they said they did some research and that the chair should only cost between ,500 to ,100," said Michaels. Michaels says without being able to work, she can’t afford to pay the difference.“It's incredibly frustrating. They’re treating it like its a car or maybe even a bike. This is like my legs; this is my life. I don’t understand why they don’t get that."Michaels says she is now seeking help from an attorney. 10News reached out to Geico’s claim department, but they said they could not release any details about the claim.  1251

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A statue of a dog that sits in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter is often overlooked, but historians say it says a lot about San Diego's past and its present."A lot of people walk by every day and don't even know the story of who Bum is," said Professor David Miller with the San Diego History Center.Bum the Dog was a stray in the 1890s. According to the History Center, he arrived on a boat without an owner or any identification and made himself at home in his new town."He was really owned by nobody but loved by everybody, and he became a symbol of the new San Diego community," said Miller.Throughout his life in San Diego, Bum would wander through all parts of downtown, often bridging the gap between the upper-class areas north of Market Street and the "seedier" parts of the Gaslamp Quarter."This was the area that you had the bars, the saloons, the brothels," said Miller. "Bum didn't live by the social categories that we had created. So he was just as comfortable going to the firehouse as he was going to the brothel or the Chinese butcher shop."Bum also had adventures. Miller tells a story of how he wound up on a train to LA, spent a few days there, and then came back.He also lost a paw in a fight with another dog. Local veterinarians took care of him whenever he got injured."A surgeon had to amputate part of Bum's leg. So he walked around with a limp for the rest of his life, but he was this hero who had to stand up for himself," said Miller.The statue of Bum, also missing a paw, sits in the garden at the Gaslamp Historical Foundation. Most people who walk by it every day never see it.Other parts of San Diego have paid homage to Bum. The city's dog licenses in the early 1900s had his picture on them. And the History Center's kids club is named after Bum.Miller said Bum's story teaches us all about the importance of history."History is fun stories, it's people's lives, it's dogs getting into fights and kicked by horses and getting on trains to LA," said Miller. "But those stories tell us something more important about ourselves and who we are as San Diego."The statue is located on 4th and Island on the Northeast corner. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Airbnb is now threatening swift punishment and even legal action against guests and hosts who throw or allow parties.The vacation rental giant says it is banning parties and capping occupancy to 16. The company cited COVID restrictions as part of its rationale."Some have chosen to take bar and club behavior to homes, sometimes rented through our platform," Airbnb said in a statement. "We think such conduct is incredibly irresponsible – we do not want that type of business, and anyone engaged in or allowing that behavior does not belong on our platform."In San Diego, home to at least 11,000 vacation rentals, both residents and hosts praised the move. Andrew Kaperonis owns a home in Mission Beach sandwiched between two vacation rentals. Things got so bad with the unit to the south that he took the owner to court, ultimately making the situation better with a required seven-day minimum stay. It still, however, is a vacation rental. "You get a little bit of anxiety because you just don't know who you are going to get," he said. "You're always kind of looking around and going, 'oh, who's checking in today?'"Kaperonis said Airbnb's party ban is a step in the right direction, but questioned how it would be enforceable. Airbnb says it maintains a 24-hour hotline and rapid response teams. People can also message the site. Hosts also told ABC-10News they backed the move. Blaine Smith, owner of 710 Vacation Rentals, which manages 180 listings largely in Mission Beach, said it's good Airbnb is holding people accountable.Smith says he vets reservations and will decline them if he senses there will be a problem, but not everyone does. "I know a lot of these neighbors, I'm not trying to upset any one of them, whereas if you're a single owner that does not live in the area, I think that's where a lot of the issues come from," he said. Cy Pilkington, who manages four vacation rentals in La Jolla and Pacific Beach, said he was glad Airbnb was taking the stance. He is an on-site manager for three of the units and does not allow parties. "We want people to be able to come and enjoy a piece of our life that they normally can't have, when they live inland or hotter communities or rural communities that want to come and enjoy the beach," he said. The city of San Diego has failed to implement any new regulations on vacation rentals.
