SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some former students of Brightwood College finally have something to celebrate after their school shut down earlier this month.Town & Country San Diego Mission Valley, where the graduation was scheduled to held, will now host the ceremony free of charge.Karlene Carpenter is one of those students looking forward to the graduation ceremony. She spent countless hours with her classmates, studying and preparing for the next phase of their lives. "The curiculum was amazing. This happened a few days before Carpenter was scheduled to finish the program. Teachers stepped in to help. Carpenter said some clinical instructors worked for free to help them finish. "My last term was straight A's," Carpenter said. At first, it looked like the graduation ceremony scheduled for January 18th at Town & Country San Diego in Mission Valley was not going to happen since the school was out of business."We still had the date booked, but there was no way to pay for it," Carpenter said. "I went to school a little later in life. You want to walk across that stage, you want to wear your cap and gown, you want to participate in the pinning ceremony inducting you into nursing."Then came a little holiday cheer thanks to Santa's helpers, in the form of Town & Country staff. "We have extended to them a complimentary graduation. Everyone in their families can see them and just really enjoy what they worked so hard for," said Susan Penman, director of sales and marketing at the facility. From stressful classes to a sudden college shutdown, it was the news Carpenter was more than happy to hear. "Thank you from the bottom of my heart. My entire class and all of these students are just elated. It was basically a Christmas miracle," she said. 1988

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Starting Monday, CVS Pharmacy will begin giving COVID-19 vaccines to staff and residents at California's long term care facilities. On Dec. 18, the first shot was given by a CVS employee at a nursing home in Connecticut."We'll be putting 9,000 vaccinators on the road to give those vaccines across the country," Jonathan Roberts, Vice President of CVS Health, said then.Ten days later, CVS pharmacy will begin its 12-week vaccination program at California's skilled nursing facilities and assisted living centers. The company expects to give the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to around 700,000 people at 15,000 facilities across the state."Retail pharmacies are the foundation of the approach here, both because we are convenient and we're everywhere," Dr. Troy Brennan, Chief Medical Officer of CVS Health, said.Earlier this month, the federal government awarded Walgreens and CVS contracts to roll out the vaccines because of already existing infrastructure and staff. CVS vaccinators will visit each facility at least three times for boosters and check-ups within the 12-week rotation.After this initial phase, CVS executives say they will move onto the next tier of priority recipients, which includes essential workers, older Americans, and those with chronic illnesses."We have the best chance of being able to reach the public, and the public likes that approach," Dr. Brennan said.Both pharmacies already use their websites and apps, where people can make COVID testing appointments. By April, they say a similar page will be set up for the general public to make their vaccine appointments."We have a fairly flexible digital front end and that we have developed for the testing, but it will be applicable here," Dr. Brennan said.The companies hope their wide reach can help mitigate the spread by summer."I would hope that by June or July, we are going to be in a situation where there's going to be enough reduction of overall transmission, that we are going to be able to [return to] some sort of normal life." 2042

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Saturday, San Diego County reported a record 1,478 new coronavirus cases and six additional deaths, bringing the county's totals to 70,709 cases and 966 fatalities.Saturday's new cases yielded a 7% positivity rate out of 21,947 tests reported. The new daily case report marks the third time in a week that the county has reported more than 1,000 new cases. It was also the 11th-straight day the county reported at least 600 new cases.Eleven new community outbreaks were also confirmed on Friday: Three in business settings, three in faith-based settings, two in childcare settings, one in a TK-12 school setting, one in a restaurant/bar setting, and one in a gym setting. A community outbreak is three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households over the last two weeks.County businesses saw purple tier restrictions go into effect on Saturday, further limiting reopening of the county due to the surge in coronavirus cases seen over the last couple of weeks.California's limited stay-at-home order is also set to begin Saturday night, limiting non-essential businesses between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. for one month in counties under the state's purple tier.County public health officials are worried that fatigue is setting in on San Diegans and urged residents to avoid large gatherings this week for Thanksgiving,"The virus is widespread and every element of our community is impacted," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "Now more than ever it is vital that San Diegans avoid gatherings and crowds, wear a face covering when they are out in public and stay home if they are sick."Hospitalizations due to COVID-19 continues to rise as well, with 440 hospitalized and 127 in intensive care. Those numbers are nearly double the amount recorded a month ago.The county is reminding residents that gatherings should be limited to three households, held outdoors if possible, and be two hours or less. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SeaWorld San Diego's next thrill ride has been given the all clear by the state.The California Coastal Commission Wednesday approved the park's request for a dive coaster called Mako, set to open at the park next year. The roller coaster is already being billed as the "tallest, fastest, and longest dive coaster in California," and the only floorless dive coaster in the state.The San Diego City Council gave the 153-foot ride unanimous approval last April, allowing SeaWorld to exceed the city's 30-foot height limitation in coastal zones.RELATED: SeaWorld San Diego brings back its popular annual SoCal PassSeaWorld says construction on Mako should begin in the next few months.The ride, announced in January, will be constructed by Switzerland-based Bollinger & Mabillard. Floorless cars will hold 18 riders at a time in three six-person rows. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Shoppers in Del Mar Heights are checking their receipts after learning through a social media app that some merchants are charging more sales tax than they should. Last year the City of Del Mar raised its sales tax to 8.75 percent, but the tax rate only applies to businesses within the city.  The problem arose when some businesses that share Del Mar's zip code, but get San Diego services, mistakenly charged the higher Del Mar rate. San Diego's sales tax is 7.75 percent. David did not want to give his last name, but he checked his receipt for the Jack in the Box restaurant in the beachside shopping center and discovered he'd been charged the higher tax rate, an extra 8-cents. David didn't complain to management and told us 8-cents wasn't a big set-back but did say he believed the problem should be corrected.  Several of his neighbors posted comments on the Nextdoor social media site about other establishments doing the same thing. 10News made purchases at three stores and found they charged the correct sales tax, but when we bought a salad and iced tea from Jack in the Box, we were charged at the Del Mar rate of 8.75 percent, just like David.  Another customer who did not want his name used also shared a receipt showing he paid at the higher rate. He also had a receipt dated April 24 of this year, showing he overpaid sales tax to the Del Mar Wine Company in the same shopping center. A spokesman for Jack in the Box told 10News the franchise made an honest mistake and re-set its cash registers to reflect the correct sales tax. A clerk at the wine store told 10News to email the manager.  As of this posting, he had not responded. 10News Contacted the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration.  Spokesman Paul Cambra explained that Del Mar was one of the few pockets of California that have a "zip code split".  Cambra called it a common problem when zip code boundaries don't match city boundaries. In an email to 10News Cambra wrote:"If a taxpayer overcharges, we will tell them to either return it to the customer or remit it to the CDTFA. If they have undercharged, they will still owe the tax, and depending on when they remit it, they may also be charged interest and penalties." Cambra noted that no consumer complaints about being overcharged had come from the 92014 zip code. Consumers are encouraged to know the sales tax in the communities where they shop.
