Father and son stories aren't supposed to look like this."I was praying for my friends and family to be OK," said Braden Freidkes, a freshman at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. He was inside the school when a gunman started shooting.Braden eventually made it out and into his parents' arms. They had been trying to reach him repeatedly and up until that point had feared the worst. "We were one of the lucky ones. We were able to get him and he was safe," said John Freidkes, Braden's father. But now Braden and his dad have a shared experience, in a way they could have never imagined.  605

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) — A verbal confrontation between a North County father and son turned violent after a knife was involved, leading to a stabbing.A man and his son living in the 1100 block of Saxony Rd. got into an argument at about 4:30 p.m. Friday, the San Diego Sheriff's Department said. The argument soon turned into a violent confrontation though, when one of the son reportedly stabbed his father, according to City News Service. The father was taken to a nearby hospital with a single, non-life threatening stab wound.Deputies were unable to find the man's son though, after searching the nearby area using K-9 officers and a SDSO helicopter.SDSO was still trying to locate the suspect Saturday. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Supporters of Newland Sierra, a large housing development north of Escondido, launched their effort to rally voter support Friday at a press conference outside the Registrar of Voters. The project would build 2,135 homes on unincorporated land next to I-15 along Deer Springs Road. The design includes amenitites such as new parks and hiking trails, while touting that it preserves 60% of the land as open space. Newland also points out green innovations, such as solar panels on every home and electric car plug-ins in every garage. Most importantly, supporters say the homes are desperately needed to support families in North County.Opponents say the massive development would change the rural character of the area. They argue that traffic would be unbearable along Deer Springs Road and that evacuating during a wildfire would be dangerously slow. Newland counters that it will expand Deer Springs Road and that it includes a state-of-the-art fire plan. "We'll still have our country feeling, but it's nice to have a safer road," said Corrie Lott, a neighbor who supports the porject.Opposition is led by the neighboring Golden Door resort. "The developer stands to make more than a billion dollars, and the vast majority of homes will require a six figure salary to afford," said a spokesperson in a statement to 10News. 1360

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) -- Encinitas resident Amy Dixon was always an avid athlete growing up in Connecticut, but in her 20's, her life would change forever. She noticed while working at a restaurant, she kept bumping into things, and later became very concerned when she fell down the stairs at her home. She says her vision was fine when looking straight ahead, but was losing sight from the outside in. A doctor originally though she had a detached retina, but that wouldn't be the case."It was this rare disease and it was progressive. At the time they thought I was going to be totally blind within a year."She would lose 98% of her vision, and started to think her days as an athlete were over."The words athlete and blind were not in the same sentence for me."The treatment for her disease was to suppress the immune system, but the medication she was taking caused her to put on weight. That's when she started swimming, riding a spin bike, and jogging."Someone said your swimming, you're biking, and you're running. Have you ever thought about doing triathlons?"She thought it sounded terrifying but fun. And not only did she give it a try, she excelled."I'm currently ranked number 6 in the world and number 1 in the United States."With 98% vision loss, she has implants in her eyes to help her see. Then she was introduced to Iris Vision. A product which at first glance looks like goggles. But for Amy, it would totally change the way she trained."It increases my visual fields," she says. "My vision is super tiny, it's like looking through a straw. What's cool about Iris Vision, is it allows me to see my computer screen, and more importantly, I can now see my heart rate and what my speed is. I'm can now see what the prescribed workout is that my coach sent to me."She has become a very successful triathlete, as she made the national team back in 2015. She was an alternate for the Paralympic Games in Rio in 2016. She was training for the 2020 games Tokyo when the COVID-19 pandemic hit."I am 44 years old and my disease is very challenging. It takes a huge team of doctors, because my eye disease is an autoimmune condition. So to get to Tokyo is pretty miraculous at my age. When everything got delayed it meant another hard year of training, and fund raising trying to cover travel expenses for me and my guide." 2347
