A company, that according to its website, ‘Cleans beyond what the eye can see.’ And in the age of COVID, business is good.“I’ve actually been able to bring people who needed work a source of income and employment,” says Jackson.For an essential business like Truvian Sciences, a COVID outbreak and loss of employees would be a devastating blow to its progress.“People touch stuff all day long. I’m a TSA guy,” says Jackson wiping down cabinet handles.T-S-A is Jackson’s term for Touch Sensitive Areas. He knows where bacteria live and how to kill it. But how he learned these skills is a complicated journey.“It was like graduating from the school of hard knocks, literally,” says Jackson remembering.That school was at the California City Correctional Facility.“I was incarcerated on weapons charges,” says Jackson.Jackson joined an Oceanside gang when he was just 14 and was in prison by the age of 24. After years in and out, he chose a different path that would offer a new life. He joined a prison work program that taught him how to clean and disinfect hospitals with the highest standards.“Everything I know about cleaning, that’s going to be my ticket when I get home,” added Jackson thinking back to his final months in prison.And that’s when Jackson was introduced to Defy Ventures. Think Shark Tank for prisoners. He spent five months in an entrepreneurial training program, culminating in a pitch competition judged by Venture Capitalists and CEOs.Mark Bowles, a San Diego biotech and technology entrepreneur, was there to hear Jackson’s pitch.“To really make a difference, you have to do more than just put a sign in your yard or post memes. I think you have to actually go do something, and this program does make a big difference,” said Bowles. “You’re not with him very long before you realize this guy is shot out of a cannon.”After several pitch rounds, Jackson ended up placing second.And by coincidence, that very night, he was released from prison. Bowles and his team invested in Jackson’s startup. And when COVID hit, he was hired fulltime by Truvian.“He’s a full capitalist now,” adds Bowles with a smile. “He’s got stock options, and he’s working in a high-tech company.”To understand what a life-transformation this is for Jackson, you must first know the recidivism rate for prisoners after three to five years of release, according to the DOJ, is roughly 70%. Timothy has been out of prison for 3 ? years and continues to rebuild his life.“For somebody to be able to do that, it just spoke volumes to me,” says Lt. Taurino Valdovinos.No one is happier for Timothy more than Lt. Taurino Valdovinos of the Oceanside Police Department. He was Jackson’s initial arresting officer.“My first experience with Timothy was on the night we arrested him,” adds Valdovinos.Now the two speak together, offering a way out to troubled youth in Oceanside.“It’s my favorite part of the program,” says Valdovinos. “When we let the kids know our past and that bond we have, it is incredible the look on their faces.”For Jackson, it is a surreal moment every time.“I never thought that I would be asked by law enforcement to do such a thing,” says Jackson. “You won’t catch me on the other side of that recidivism number.” 3680

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- A San Diego mother says working from home during the coronavirus pandemic cost her her job. She claims she was fired because her kids were making noises in the background of her teleconference calls."We're letting you go," Drisana Rios said. That was what her Human Resources representative told her in a call earlier this month. She said she thought the call was supposed to help resolve her workplace problems. Instead, by the end of the call, she says she was fired.Rios says it all began in mid-March when her bosses at an out-of-state insurance firm told her to work from home and telecommute via conference calls. This was in response to the state's COVID-19 lockdown orders.Rios says all parents working from home received an email from the company's regional boss that read, "thank you for the incredible effort you are putting forth through these difficult times." She says it also said that they would avoid layoffs during the pandemic.Like many parents, Rios was unable to find childcare for her four-year-old daughter and one-year-old son. Despite juggling parenting and working from home, Rios claims she was able to complete all her tasks. She adds that her clients never complained about her kids being in the background of her conference calls. The only complaints, she says, came from her male, direct superior."I said, 'Do you want me to lock my kids in the room? My one-year-old in the room? Do you want me to do that?' And… he responded and said, 'Figure it out.'" Rios said.She says she tried to arrange calls to be during her children's afternoon naptimes but claims her boss continued to ignore and demean her."He would purposely overlap schedules," Rios said.Rios then reached out to her HR department and asked how she should deal with the harassment she says she was experiencing-- a move she says that backfired a week later."She was shamed for having children, so she first elevated it to Human Resources," Daphne Delvaux, Sr. trial attorney at Gruenberg Law, said. "Human Resources took the side of the abusive manager, and terminated her for complaining."Rios has since filed a lawsuit against both her direct boss and the company for Gender discrimination, Retaliation, Gender harassment, Failure to prevent gender discrimination, Negligent supervision, Intentional infliction of emotional distress, and Wrongful termination in violation of public policy.In her complaint, Rios claims her HR representative told her that the company was "...experiencing a reduced revenue due to COVID-19 and they were laying [the] plaintiff off as a result of the pandemic." But Rios believes this was retaliation."The fact that they tried to cover it up because I went to HR, it's obvious what they did," Rios said.ABC 10News reached out to the company headquarters for comment on this lawsuit. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- A San Diego-based genetics company received the FDA's Emergency Use Authorization for its revolutionary type of COVID-19 testing. The new test not only provides a positive or negative reading, but it also provides vital genetic information that can help create a vaccine.From concept to the FDA's emergency use authorization, the San Diego-based team at Illumina worked at warp speed."The idea came 58 days ago," Susan Tousi, Sr. VP. of Production and Development at Illumina said. "It took a village of all of us in San Diego to make that happen."There are already many different types of COVID-19 tests on the market.But the scientists and engineers at Illumina came up with a test that reveals a lot more."Our test not only gives you a yes or no answer for the presence of the virus, but it also gives you the genetic sequence of the virus," Tousi said.On Tuesday, the FDA approved the Emergency use of the world's first COVID-19 test that also shows the biological makeup of the virus.The results can help researchers track and trace the virus and study different mutations over time and in different regions."Knowing this is really critical, not only to the development of effective vaccines but also for us to detect its presence, recurrence, and whether there is a mutated form that we need to be prepared for," Tousi said.The sample is collected via nose or throat swab and sent to the lab.A sequencing machine can run up 43,000 samples a week. From swab to results, it takes only 24 hours."This was the culmination of an incredible amount of work. And I'm confident we're going to make a big difference in the fight against COVID," Tousi said. "The understanding of this virus at the genetic level is going to make all of the difference in the world in fighting this and future disease."The company has already started to ship its tests to large labs across the world. 1904

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The threat of a major lawsuit has led to several San Diego County cities changing how they are holding elections. As voters in those districts head to the polls or get their mail-in ballots, they will notice a big change in their options on who to vote for.15 jurisdictions in the county are switching from at-large elections to district elections. This means those jurisdictions have been carved up into districts. In those races voters will only be able to vote for someone who lives in that same district."It's going to create some confusion at the ballot box," Encinitas City Councilmember Tony Kranz told 10News. "You're going to wonder why you can't vote for some of those folks."Encinitas made the change for 2018, along with Carlsbad, El Cajon, Oceanside, Poway, San Marcos, Santee and Vista. School Districts using the new voting system are Cajon Valley Union, Carlsbad Unified, Oceanside Unified, Poway Unified, San Dieguito Union High School, and San Marcos Unified.In most cases, the change is a response to a threatened lawsuit. Attorney Kevin Shenkman, who works in Malibu, has threatened lawsuits challenging the legality of at-large elections across California. He says at-large elections are a violation of California's Voter's Rights Act of 2001."It's just a fundamentally unfair election system that freezes out minorities," Shenkman told 10News.Shenkman says at-large elections make it easier for the majority, even a slim majority, to take full control city councils, school boards, and other elected bodies. He says studies have shown that leaves minority groups without a voice.In an interview with 10News, he pointed out examples, including a claim that Hispanic voters did not have enough representation in Encintas, and a claim that voters in the southern portion of Poway have disproportionally less power than those in other parts of Poway."District elections are just a more fair system," Shenkman says. 1974
