SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of the man killed on India Street on this month has identified him as David Hill. The 38-year-old was a pathology resident at Balboa Naval Hospital. In the Navy since 2004, Hill had reached the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He was an avid traveler, having visited dozens of countries. His mother, Carol Hill, said he had a goal of running a marathon on every continent. Hill had already checked off the hardest, Antarctica, though he had to get creative. “He did the 26 miles on the ship’s treadmill to fill that square!” said Hill's mother. He had made it a few blocks from his apartment when he was struck by the driver of a minivan on India Street near Olive and Palm. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of a missing Arizona grandmother believes that she may be heading to San Diego.On Monday, ABC10 News spoke to Aaron Richardson about his grandmother, Alice Fults, who was last seen on Friday morning in Chandler, Arizona. "You'd never think this would happen to you and for it to happen and [to] somebody you know totally tears you apart," he told ABC10 News.On Monday afternoon, Chandler Police confirmed that the 58-year-old stroke survivor and dementia patient got on a Greyhound bus on Friday morning that was bound for Los Angeles.Her family says that she could be trying to get to San Diego which is where she grew up and where her sister still lives. "She's from Lakeside so she always talked about Lakeside, California and how she wanted to go back to Lakeside," said Richardson.Fults has hearts with names tattooed on her legs and horseshoes tattooed on her arms. She has a drooping eyelid from her stroke and needs her seizure medication. Her family told ABC10 News that she left with her granddaughter's ID but not her own ID. She doesn't have a cell phone. Family added that she has a history of wandering off but never for more than a few hours."If you see this, Alice...I love you, grandma. Get some help, okay? Let us know you're okay," Richardson added.Chandler Police have issued a silver alert and are working on notifying law enforcement in Southern California about her disappearance. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Metropolitan Transit System has launched an initiative to keep their buses and trolleys clean and their riders and employees safe.MTS officials said their ridership has dropped 75 percent since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Now, with officials are seeing a recent uptick in riders, the agency is implementing new health and safety measures.Nikki Jefferson has relied on the trolley to get to work for the last three years. When the cases of COVID-19 started popping up around San Diego County, she was nervous about getting back on board.“I still use hand sanitizer after my last stop, anytime I touch the button,” Jefferson said.To help control the spread of COVID-19, the MTS is now cleaning their 800 buses and 135 trolley cars twice a day. MTS is even using the deep-cleaning fogging technique to disinfect high-touch areas.Additionally, hand-washing stations are installed at their 54 transit stops and plexiglass barriers protect bus drivers from passengers.When on a bus or trolley, passengers are urged to practice social distancing whenever possible.Officials said all riders on buses or trolleys, and riders at stops or stations, will be required to wear face masks or coverings.MTS CEO Sharon Cooney said, “We’re going to educate all of our customers so that they know you can’t come on board without as mask for some kind of face covering.”It’s a move Jefferson agrees with as she spends most of her time riding the trolley.“It makes me feel safer and less of a chance that I’m going to catch COVID-19, since I have to go to work, but I don’t want to bring it to work with me or have it around me,” said Jefferson.MTS officials said they will educate the public about the face coverings. Some staff will also have face coverings on hand. But they add if someone refuses to wear one, they’ll look into issuing a citation.So far, 33 MTS employees have tested positive for the coronavirus; 22 have recovered and have returned to work. 1984

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The former Imperial Beach man convicted of molesting and strangling two young boys in 1993 has died of coronavirus, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said. Scott Thomas Erskine, 57, was sentenced to death in San Diego County in 2004 for the first-degree murders of 9-year-old Jonathan Sellers and 13-year-old Charles Keever.The California Department of Corrections said Erskine died from complications due to the virus at an outside hospital. He was on death row at San Quentin. Both Sellers and Keever disappeared while on a bicycle ride near their South Bay homes. Erskine lured the victims to an igloo-shaped “fort” of brush before molesting and strangling them.In March of 2001, Erskine was serving a 70-year sentence for raping a San Diego woman when newly-tested DNA linked him to the murder of the boys.Erskine also pleaded guilty to a second-degree murder for the Florida slaying of 26-year-old Renee Baker. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The local protester who appeared in a controversial video getting taken away in an unmarked San Diego Police van is now speaking out, as police conduct an internal investigation.“No one should feel fear from the people that are supposed to serve and protect us,” Shayla Piccini told 10News on Monday as she shared the story of her arrest from last Thursday on Park Boulevard.The video shows a protester being taken away in an unmarked van as one officer warns her family around her not to follow them or he will shoot.“You see both of her legs kind of go up in the air because she's going [into the van] head first. That’s way too much force needed for this 20-year-old lady here,” said attorney Dante Pride.“That whole ride, I was asking several questions like, ‘Who are you? Where are you taking me?’ I was getting stares and no answers,” said Piccini.Piccini said she spent the day at a protest in Downtown San Diego. After several hours, the group was walking back to their car when she saw several police motorcycles driving past them. At that moment, she held up her cardboard sign.San Diego police say detectives witnessed her step off the sidewalk and swing the sign at a passing motorcycle officer, which she denied.In the foreground of the video, you can see men in what look to be marked police vests. But the people who handcuffed and detained Piccini in an unmarked van, are in plain clothes.One man wearing military-style tactical gear can be heard in the video saying, "You follow us, you will get shot. You understand me?"Piccini's cousin Brandi Matthews said she thought he was talking to her. “When he said the words, ‘I'll shoot you,’ I automatically just dropped to my knees to demonstrate that I'm not trying to hurt anybody...I just want to know where they're taking my cousin,” she added.According to San Diego Police, the statement about shooting those attempting to follow was made by a SWAT officer who had a pepper ball device. SDPD also told 10News that his comment was a valid announcement of use of force.Police said due to the large crowd still in the area, and the detectives felt the need to leave immediately.Piccini spent the night in jail on suspicion of assault on an officer.
