Chinese officials said water quality was improving in the country's third-largest lake, choked by a polluted slick of algae, but experts warned that tap water in the area was still not safe, state media reported on Saturday. Taihu Lake, in the southern province of Jiangsu, has been struck by a foul-smelling canopy of algae that left tap water undrinkable for more than 2.3 million residents of nearby Wuxi and prompted a run on bottled water at local supermarkets. Residents said the government was telling them it was safe to drink boiled water, but complained that it still had an unappealing green film on top. Environment experts said it was unlikely to be fit to drink. "Although quality of the water supply has improved significantly on Friday and now it is safe for washing hands or clothes, it still takes some time to become drinkable," the Zhang Xiaojian, an environment specialist at Tsinghua University in Beijing said. Algae blooms can develop in water that is rich in nutrients, often because of run-off from heavy fertiliser use, industrial waste and untreated sewage. Officials have invoked emergency measures, diverting the Yangtze river and seeding clouds to provoke rainfall, to try to flush out the algae. Heavy rainfall is also expected in the area in the next few days. Residents of Wuxi said the algae, which they said smelt like rotten meat, was driving a roaring trade at McDonald's and KFC fast-food outlets in the city. "Here they fry food," said a company manager named Zhao as he queued at KFC. "I can't eat dumplings or noodles because they would be cooked in water and it's too expensive to use bottled water."

BEIJING - China's food watchdog issued an emergency circular on Wednesday to ensure food safety in the face of severe winter weather that has blocked transport and endangered supplies in much of central, eastern and southern China.The State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) ordered all the local food and drug bureaus to tighten inspections of food production and sale facilities so as to prevent inferior or fake food from entering the market.The snow, the heaviest in decades in many places, has been falling in China's east, central and southern regions since January 10, causing building collapses, power blackouts, highway closures and crop destruction.The SFDA ordered all local bureaus to maintain food market order and to prosecute law violations, noting supplies of some foods was already tight.The extreme weather in the past two weeks hit as Chinese travelers began one of the world's biggest annual mass migrations for the Chinese Lunar New Year, or the Spring Festival, the most important festival for Chinese family gatherings.The SFDA also ordered local bureaus to promptly report and tackle emergencies and prevent mass incidents of food poisoning.

SHENZHEN: A student at an IT college in Zhuhai, South China's Guangdong Province, ran amok on Tuesday, stabbing six of his classmates, police said Wednesday.One of the victims suffered a deep gash to the neck, which required intensive care treatment, but he is said to be in a stable condition.The 21-year-old attacker, surnamed Chen, was later arrested and is now in custody. He is believed to be suffering from a mental illness, a spokeswoman for the Zhuhai public security bureau told China Daily yesterday.She refused to give any further information, however, as the case is still under investigation.According to a report by the Guangzhou-based Southern Metropolis Daily, the incident happened at about 10:40 am at the start of a new class.Witnesses said Chen pulled out a 15-cm-long fruit knife and "casually" stabbed the two people sitting next to him and in front of him."I saw blood gushing from one boy's throat and another had been stabbed in the right side of his neck," the newspaper quoted one witness, who asked not to be named, as saying.Chen then attacked four other classmates, as they and their teacher attempted to escape the room, the witness said.After the attack, Chen remained in the classroom.A teacher locked the door from the outside and called police, the Guangzhou Daily reported.Police arrived soon after and arrested him.The victims were taken to a nearby hospital. BEIJING, March 15 (Xinhua) -- China recorded 68.02 billion U.S. dollars in foreign trade of electronics and information products in January, a growth of 19.3 percent year-on-year.     Sources with the General Administration of Customs said on Saturday that the growth rate was 12.9 percentage points lower than the year-earlier level.     The total trade volume included 38.29 billion U.S. dollars in export value, up 22.9 percent, and 29.73 billion dollars in import value, up 15.2 percent.     The sources said the growth rate for exports was 12.8 percentage points lower than the same month of last year, while that for imports was 13 percentage points lower.     Of the total exports, wholly owned foreign companies accounted for 24.94 billion U.S. dollars, or 65.1 percent, the sources added.

China will undertake nearly 10 percent of an international fusion-research project to be implemented this year.The project is called ITER and wants to demonstrate the scientific and technical feasibility of fusion power - the energy of the sun or hydrogen bomb - for peaceful use."The project aims to find a shortcut to solve our energy shortage," Luo Delong, deputy director of the ITER China Office, said at the Oriental Science and Technology Forum held in Shanghai over the weekend.He said Chinese researchers will be in charge of producing various components of the project and escorting them into Cadarache in the south of France where the ITER's key equipment will be constructed.China will inject about one billion yuan (US7.5 million) into the project, accounting for nearly 10 percent of the overall ITER investment, officials said.Other partners in the project include the European Union, the United States, Japan, India and Russia.According to Zhang Jie, a fusion-power scientist of Jiao Tong University, researchers of universities in Shanghai, including Fudan and Donghua, are conducting fusion-related studies.China will further enhance its education in the area to lift the country's overall research power.The long-term objective of the research is to harness fusion nuclear energy to help meet the future energy needs of mankind, project officials said.The aim of ITER is to show fusion can be used to generate electrical power and do the preparation work to build and operate an electricity-producing plant.The key part of the project is to develop a viable fusion-power reactor.Scientists of ITER will test a number of key technologies, including the heating, control, diagnostic and remote maintenance that will be needed for a real fusion-power station, officials said.Local experts said fusion may produce dozens of times more energy than fission, which now directs most of the world's nuclear-power plants.Fission can only be caused by uranium. However, the resource to trigger fusion can be found in ordinary substances from the sea, they said.According to the Website of ITER, the overall construction cost of ITER is estimated at five billion euros (US.37 billion) over 10 years and another five billion euros are earmarked for the 20-year operation period.The ITER organization owns the ITER device and is responsible for all aspects of the project, such as licensing procedures, hardware procurements and operation.
