SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Rep. Susan Davis of the 53rd Congressional District won’t seek re-election in 2020, the Congresswoman announced Wednesday. Davis was first elected to Congress in 2000. “I have struggled to make this very difficult decision. I will not seek another term in Congress. My decision today represents a desire to live and work ‘at home’ in San Diego,” she said. Davis is currently the second highest-ranking Democrat on both the House Education and Labor Committee and the House Armed Service Committee. Among measures recently supported by Davis is the Green New Deal, introduced by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She also helped spearhead the repeal of the “don’t ask, don’t tell,” a Clinton-era policy which allowed LGTBQ people to serve in the military only if they remained in the closet.“It makes us a better military, a better country, and I was very happy to be a part of that,” said Davis.So far, only two other candidates have officially entered the race. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diegans are signing up to build accessory dwelling units, or granny flats, in numbers that haven’t been seen in years. According to the city’s development services department people, more than 200 people went through the permitting process in 2018. “It fits for us to build an additional unit, the ADU since the council changed their ordinances,” said San Diego resident Efrain Conrique. Efrain Conrique has been in the same house since the 1960s but is now planning to build a 1,100 square foot accessory dwelling unit in his backyard. The house is for his granddaughter. He says since the City of San Diego streamlined the ADU process, nearly half calls he gets are people looking to build. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Renters in the city of San Diego will have one final day to apply for emergency financial assistance.The deadline to apply for the city’s one-time program, which provides up to ,000 per household, is Friday, Aug. 7.Families with past due or upcoming rent payments are eligible, and payments for those who are selected are expected to be distributed in the next few weeks.Each household has to provide documentation to prove they are not currently receiving any rental subsidies.
