LOS ANGELES (AP) — Health officials say the number of coronavirus cases in California is surging to the highest level since the start of the pandemic. The California Department of Health and Human Services reported more than 15,000 cases Saturday and another 14,000 cases on Sunday. They come even before the Thanksgiving holiday that has many health officials concerned. A curfew took effect Saturday requiring people to stay home from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. affecting most Californians, and Los Angeles is on the verge of an even tougher lockdown. (CNS) - The California State University system Tuesday extended its fall 2021 application deadline to Dec. 15 to accommodate students coping with the coronavirus pandemic.The application deadline was originally this Friday.Applications for any of the CSU campuses can be submitted online at www2.calstate.edu/apply.Prospective students were also encouraged to explore CSU financial aid options after applying, with officials noting that 80% of all CSU students receive some form of financial aid.The University of California system on Monday extended its application period, not because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but due to a problem with the online application portal. LOS ANGELES (AP) — A new rule approved by the California Horse Racing Board means jockeys competing in the state won’t be allowed to strike a horse more than six times during a race and then only in an underhanded position. The rule would allow no more than two strikes in succession using whips that must meet new board standards to soften the blows. The board voted 4-2 to approve the rule. LOS ANGELES (AP) — A famous South American chef says he was stopped as he brought 40 piranhas in a duffel bag through Los Angeles International Airport.Virgilio Martinez, chef-owner of Central restaurant in Peru, tells the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday that he hoped to serve the predatory, sharp-toothed fish during an LA food festival.Martinez was featured in the third season of the Netflix show "Chef's Table."He says customs agents pulled him into an interrogation room last week when they found the cache of frozen, vacuum-sealed piranhas.After five hours, the agents let Martinez through with the fish. He used them that night on a salad.
