BEIJING, March 11(Xinhuanet)-- People with more fat around their waist, often known as “apple shape”, may not have a greater risk of heart attack than those with fatter bottoms and hips, according to a new study published in Lancet as quotted by media reports Friday.This study funded by the Medical Research Council and British Heart Foundation, reviewed 220,000 individual records from 17 countries and monitored the occurrence of heart attacks or strokes based on body mass index (BMI) versus waist-hip circumference. It found that people with "apple-shaped" obesity were at a higher risk of having heart risks compared to those with general obesity as assessed by their BMI.  This contradicts previous claims that "apple shaped" bodies were three times more likely to suffer heart attacks than those with more generally distributed fat.But experts warn obesity is still bad for the heart, no matter where the fat is, and they argue there is confusion about the best way to measure it. "Regardless of how you measure it, being obese is bad for your heart. BEIJING, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- China's new rules for reviewing proposed mergers and acquisition (M&A) deals by foreign firms on grounds of national security would benefit both Chinese and foreign investors, a Ministry of Commerce (MOC) spokesman said Thursday.The rules will facilitate the growth of foreign-invested enterprises (FIEs) in China and improve the quality and structure of foreign direct investment (FDI) flowing into China, MOC spokesman Yao Jian said at a press conference.The move also marked an improving legal environment for the security of China's business sector along with its opening-up drive, given that M&A by FIEs will increasingly become a trend in the coming years, Yao said."The adoption of the rules in China will also increase policy transparency and improve law-based government administration," said Yao.Yao's words came after the State Council, China's Cabinet, announced last Saturday that it was establishing a panel to check whether M&A deals struck by foreign firms in the country endanger national security.The panel will review attempts by FIEs to buy or merge with domestic companies whose business pertains to national defence, agriculture, energy, resources, key infrastructure, transport systems, key technology sectors and important equipment manufacturing industries, according to a statement published on the central government's website www.gov.cn.The review will be conducted by a foreign investment security review board under the cabinet, members of which come from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the MOC and other agencies.The new regulations, which take effect in March, come at a time when China is expected to see more M&A deals struck by foreign firms.Currently, inward M&A accounts for about 3 percent of China's total FDI, a sharp contrast with the global average level of more than 70 percent, said Yao. LOS ANGELES, April 6 (Xinhua) -- Freeze-dried strawberries may play a role in the prevention of esophageal cancer, a new study suggests."Strawberries may be an alternative or work together with other chemopreventive drugs for the prevention of esophageal cancer," said lead researcher Tong Chen, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor, division of medical oncology, department of internal medicine at the Ohio State University.Study findings were presented at the ongoing 102nd annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) in Orlando, Florida, according to the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) on Wednesday."We concluded from this study that six months of eating strawberries is safe and easy to consume. In addition, our preliminary data suggests that strawberries can decrease histological grade of precancerous lesions and reduce cancer- related molecular events," said Chen, who is also a member of the Molecular Carcinogenesis and Chemoprevention Program in the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center.The study involved a group of participants who consumed 60 grams of freeze-dried strawberries daily for six months and completed a dietary diary chronicling their strawberry consumption.The researchers obtained biopsy specimens before and after strawberry consumption. The results showed that 29 out of 36 participants experienced a decrease in histological grade of the precancerous lesions during the study.Using freeze-dried strawberries was important because by removing the water from the berries, they concentrated the preventive substances by nearly 10-fold, Chen said.Esophageal cancer is the third most common gastrointestinal cancer and the sixth most frequent cause of cancer death in the world, she noted.Chen and her team are studying esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) which makes up 95 percent of cases of esophageal cancer worldwide. China, where this study took place, has the highest incidence of esophageal SCC, according to the AAAS.In a previous study, Chen and colleagues found that freeze- dried strawberries significantly inhibited tumor development in the esophagus of rats. Based on these results, they embarked on a Phase Ib trial that included participants with esophageal precancerous lesions who were at high risk for esophageal cancer."Our study is important because it shows that strawberries may slow the progression of precancerous lesion in the esophagus," Chen said.But she said they need to test this in randomized placebo- controlled trials in the future.
