(AP) -- California is rolling out a voluntary smartphone tool to alert people if they spent time near someone who tests positive for the coronavirus as cases and hospitalizations soar throughout the state.Gov. Roughly six percent of the male population - and less than one percent of the female population - suffer from colorblindness.It isn’t a deficiency that is debilitating, but it can be frustrating.For 11-year-old Andreas Koerber, reds and greens are mixed up, blues and purples are difficult to differentiate. The world, as he sees it, is generally more drab.The North Olmsted, Ohio sixth-grader and his family didn’t know there was a fix, until recently.Now, his eyes are open to an entirely new world after the discovery of specialized glasses.“Everything is more colorful, it’s brighter, it’s not as dark,” Andreas said.He realized he was colorblind at age five. It’s one of the biggest differences between him and his twin brother Luke. Luke is the one who had the idea to surprise Andreas with the glasses after learning about them online.“He’s my brother and really, it doesn’t feel fair that I get to see all the colors and he doesn’t,” Luke said. “I didn’t really realize how bad it was and what he wasn’t seeing.”For mom Rita Koerber, watching Andreas see colors for the first time was eye-opening.“It was just this totally special, emotional moment,” Rita said. "Kind of like Christmas when you have little kids and you’re seeing that through their eyes and they’re so excited, it was like that."The glasses run upwards of 0 and are not covered by insurance. Robert Grays was having the game of his life on Saturday as his Midwestern State University squad was beating Texas A&M-Kingsville 35-13. The 19-year-old sophomore had matched a career-high with seven tackles, with his team about to improve to 2-0 on the season. Saturday ended up being Grays' final game.  With 3:24 remaining in the fourth quarter, Grays went in for a tackle, severely injuring his neck. After being transported to Houston for treatment, Grays died on Tuesday from the injury. Grays was the squad's starting cornerback, and also played on special teams. Grays was a graduate of Fort Bend L.V. Hightower High School in Missouri City, Texas."We are saddened by the loss of Robert Grays, one of our own. This is not an easy time for anyone associated with the football program," MSU coach Bill Maskill said. "He was a tremendous individual. I really believe he might have been the most popular man on our team."He always had a smile on his face. I never saw him have a bad day. He was an uplifting spirit for all of us. He was an exciting, fun loving guy. He's going to be sorely missed. Somehow, someway we'll find a way to fight through it. Robert would want us to forge ahead."Saturday marked a deadly day in college football. SACRAMENTO  (KGTV) – Sexually transmitted diseases hit a record high in California in 2017, according to the California Department of Public Health.More than 300,000 cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and early syphilis were reported last year. The figure is 45 percent higher than five years ago.Health officials are particularly concerned by the hike because 30 women had stillbirths due to congenital syphilis, the highest number since 1995.STDs can cause serious health problems if untreated. Syphilis can cause permanent loss of hearing, vision and neurological issues. Chlamydia and gonorrhea can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility, ectopic pregnancy and chronic pelvic pain."STDs are preventable by consistently using condoms, and many STDs can be cured with antibiotics," said CDPH Director and State Public Health Officer Dr. Karen Smith. "Regular testing and treatment are very important for people who are sexually active, even for people who have no symptoms. Most people infected with an STD do not know it."Chlamydia and gonorrhea rates are highest among people under age 30, health officials said. Rates of chlamydia are highest among young women, and males account for the majority of syphilis and gonorrhea cases.  1277
