SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One man is behind bars after a series of events in Rancho Penasquitos, including nearly running over a firefighter. Around 2:30 p.m. California Highway Patrol received a report of a reckless vehicle on SR-76 near Cole Grade Road Monday. The blue Toyota RAV4 was reported after unsafely passing vehicles and speeding in the area. Shortly after, CHP reported that the driver - Falahi Abrahim - was involved in a crash and started a brush fire.Shortly after Cal Fire responded to the fire, 37-year-old Abrahim from fled the scene - nearly hitting the firefighter who was trying to help him.Police officers followed, but Abrahim refused to stop and a pursuit began. The pursuit continued westbound on SR-76 to I-15 and transitioned to I-15 Southbound. The vehicle continued to flee from officers on I-15 Southbound and exited the freeway at Camino Del Norte where the vehicle progressed eastbound.During the chase Abrahim failed to stop for two red lights at separate intersections and officers discontinued the pursuit in the interest of public safety.A San Diego Police Department helicopter continued to follow the car, communicating Abrahim's location to the CHP. At 3:11 p.m. the driver stopped near the 10000 block of Carmel Mountain Road. After a short foot pursuit, Abrahim was taken into custody and arrested under suspicion of driving under the influence of a drug and felony evading charges.The incident involving the assault of the firefighter at the collision scene is still under investigation. 1572

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More than 18,000 San Diegans got hired in May as employment began to recover from the depths of the coronavirus shutdown. The Employment Development Department reported Friday that from April to May, employers added 18,200 people to their payrolls. Still, the employment situation in San Diego County is dire. From May 2019 to May 2020, payroll employment is still down by 195,800 workers. "The positive thing is that the worst is behind us and we've seen month over month job growth so we're improving," said Alan Gin, an economist at the University of San Diego. "The negative spin is that we're improving but the situation is still bad."The hard-hit restaurant industry led the way with 9,100 new jobs, as coronavirus related restrictions began to lift, allowing in-house dining with reduced capacity.Eric Adler, who co-founded the Artisan Mexican restaurant Puesto, said this year has been particularly. But he says the chain is going to re-hire the upwards of 600 people it let go. On Friday, it held a job fair for its upcoming Mission Valley location, scheduled to open in July. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- New details are emerging after an infant was attacked by a pit bull in Logan Heights Monday night.Family members now say the dog broke free of its leash before running to the infant’s bouncy chair. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting in San Diego's Southcrest neighborhood. The shooting happened on 40th Street near National Avenue around 5:13 p.m., according to Captain Tom Underwood with the San Diego Police Department. In an evening update, Underwood confirmed that the suspect of a machete attack died at the hospital. Wednesday night's events started earlier in the afternoon on Boston Avenue, where police responded to several 911 calls for the machete attack. The suspect, identified Thursday as 48-year-old Vaughn Harrison Denham, wielding the machete is said to have known the man he attacked. 10News spoke to a man who lives at the home where the attack happened. He said the attacker is his sister's boyfriend. He said the boyfriend came over to the house and got into an argument with a family friend over a dog chain. The boyfriend then grabbed a machete and began striking the victim over the head, then to the rest of his body. That man was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.Shortly after the machete attack, Denham was pointed out to police by witnesses.Denham had a three to four-foot metal chain in his hands when an officer approached, which he then began to swing at the officer, police said. The officer backed up, according to witnesses, telling Denham to drop the chain. When he failed to comply the officer used a taser, but it was ineffective and Denham continued to approach. At this point the officer fired his weapon at Denham, hitting him at least once. "The suspect then fought police, who tried to take him into custody," Underwood said. "He was ultimately taken into custody (and) immediately transported to the hospital, where unfortunately he did not survive his wounds and was pronounced dead at the hospital."Those who know Denham told 10News he is usually a nice person, but he had been acting up lately. Neighbors said they saw him swinging around a bat a day before the attack. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More than five percent of San Diego homeowners owe more on their mortgages than their homes are even worth, according to a new Zillow report.A total of 23,290 homes in the region are in negative equity, meaning a home's value is lower than the balances on the mortgage.
