SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The family of a Navy sailor nearly killed in Syria is starting the new year with one less challenge.Over a year ago Navy EOD Tech Kenton Stacy was left paralyzed after an IED explosion. As Stacy was recovering in San Diego, renters were destroying the family’s Virginia home. “Just with everything we’re going through, it added stress. I just couldn’t believe how someone could damage our home and be okay with it,” said Kenton’s wife Lindsey.The home reeked of cigarettes, and the carpet, walls, and blinds were destroyed. When the EOD community in Virginia learned what happened in November they began to make repairs on the home.Julie Fish, a real estate agent with Signature Realty Select, also stepped in to help, taking over as the realtor.After reaching out for more help, people around the country offered money, time, services and resources. “These guys are...it’s like a brotherhood, there’s nothing they wouldn’t do for one another, and I like to think the wives are the same way,” said Fish, whose husband is also a Navy EOD Tech. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The 21-year-old killed while driving across the trolley tracks near Encanto has been identified.The San Diego County Medical Examiner says Alex Garza, 21, was believed to be distracted, possibly on the phone, when he reportedly tried to drive his Toyota Prius across the tracks just before midnight at 60th Street and Imperial Avenue. The vehicle was struck by a trolley before it became pinned against a poll.San Diego Police and fire units responded to the scene where Garza was pronounced dead. 525

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The city of San Diego has a long to-do list when it comes to improving their Bridge homeless shelters. On Saturday morning, 300 people moved into the new Alpha Project bridge shelter in East Village, after the facility was flooded on December 6th. But for all of those residents, their stay is temporary. “This exists for one reason. To help people get back onto their feet. To help them get that apartment, and get that job,” Mayor Kevin Faulconer said while pointing at the mended Alpha Project tent.After contaminated flood water inundated the area, the city scrambled for a week to reopen the shelter. For nine days, residents spent their nights at SDCCU stadium. Once the East Village facility was sterilized and fixed, residents were bused back and moved into their bunks Saturday morning. But the city faces several other challenges. According to FEMA, the improved Alpha Project tent housing sits directly on top of a floodplain. Instead of rebuilding on a lower-risk area, the city decided to rehouse 325 residents in the same spot.
