The No. 29 Nationalists Corps fought hard to resist the siege, marking the official start of an eight-year resistance war.The Chinese resistance played a decisive role in inflicting heavy casualties on the Japanese. The Chinese people paid dearly for the victory, with an estimated 35 million casualties, including military and civilian, dead and wounded.The memorial has received more than 15 million visitors since it opened in 1987, said Li Zongyuan, deputy curator of the memorial hall.

XINING, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- A senior anti-corruption official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Monday urged strict supervision and inspection of relief and reconstruction work in Zhouqu County, which was devastated by a massive mudslide on Aug. 8.A supervision and inspection system must be established to ensure thorough implementation of the central authorities' instructions on disaster relief and reconstruction, said He Yong, deputy secretary of the CPC's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.He made the remarks at a conference on supervision and inspection of relief funds and supplies.He instructed intensified supervision and inspection of medical, mud-clearing, infrastructure rebuilding, resident relocation and epidemic prevention operations.He also ordered stepped-up supervision of the use of disaster relief funds, supplies and donations, and asked local officials to make public how they were utilizing the funds in a timely manner.He said the principle of openness and transparency must be applied throughout the period of disaster relief work and reconstruction, and vowed to punish any misuse of relief funds and supplies.The mudslide has killed 1,254 while 490 people remain missing as of Monday.

BRASILIA, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- The World Heritage Committee decided on Sunday to include China Danxia Landform in the World Heritage List at its 34th meeting being held in Brasilia, capital of Brazil."Danxia Landform of China" is the general name of a Serial Nomination for World Natural Heritage. This nomination consists of six geologically and geographically related Danxia Landform areas which collectively featuring the outstanding universal values of Danxia geomorphology in south-east China.The six Danxia landform areas are: Mountain Langshan and Mountain Wanfoshan (Hunan Province), Mountain Danxiashan ( Guangdong Province), Taining and Guanzhoushan (Fujian Province), Mountain Longhushan and Guifeng (Jiangxi Province), Mountain Chishui (Guizhou Province), Fangyan and Mountain Jianglangshan ( Zhejiang Province).Danxia landform, a unique type of petrographic geomorphology, could be defined as "landform consists of red bed characterized by steep cliffs." The total core area of above five regions is 73,945 hectare, and the total buffer area is 65,446 hectare.

BEIJING,Aug 9(Xinhuanet) -- China's high savings rate is expected to fall substantially in coming years as its workforce shrinks, the population ages and social security spending increases, a BIS report shows.In research published by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) on the “myth and reality” of China’s savings rate, Ma Guonan and Wang Yi found that the Asian giant needs its population to spend more in order to sustain rapid economic growth in coming years.The researchers, who were writing in their personal capacity, also reject claims that Chinese State firms have been benefiting from high savings thanks to exchange rate distortions and subsidies designed to drive economic growth.They point out that “less advantaged” and more efficient firms have been the ones posting the greatest gains in earnings in recent years rather than State-owned companies.China’s gross national savings soared from 39.2 percent of output in 1990 to 53.2 percent in 2008, far higher than the United States, which saved only 12.2 percent in 2008.Even compared to other Asian giants — Japan with 27 percent in 2007 and India with 33.6 percent in 2008 — China’s share of savings as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP) is significantly larger.Nonetheless, the population and social trends that have underpinned China’s growth and savings rates are likely tail off significantly over the next decade, the two Chinese researchers argued.In the wake of the global slump, world leaders and economists have been asking China to spend more, rather than pin its economic growth on exports to the West, in order to help address world trade imbalances.Ma, a BIS economist and Wang, who is from the Chinese central bank, said however that the current savings trend by Chinese households will not last.The swelling working population in recent years has boosted savings in recent years, they said.In addition, large-scale corporate restructuring between 1995 and 2005 increased job uncertainty, forcing workers to set aside more money in case they were fired. BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- The Agricultural Bank of China (ABC), one of China's "big four" state-owned commercial banks, won the title for the world's largest initial public offering (IPO) after selling another 3.34 billion shares at its IPO price of 2.68 yuan per share.The ABC said in a statement at the Shanghai Stock Exchange Sunday that it raised an additional 8.94 billion yuan (1.31 billion U.S. dollars) after fully exercising the over-allotment option of its Shanghai share offering. The bank has now raised 22.1 billion U.S. dollars.The previous record was set by the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, which raised a record 21.9 billion U.S. dollars in its IPO in 2006.ABC shares rose 0.37 percent to 2.69 yuan on the Shanghai bourse Friday.The ABC is the last of the "big four" state-owned commercial lenders to go public. The other three banks -- the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, China Construction Bank and Bank of China, are listed on both Shanghai and Hong Kong bourses.The over-allotment, or so-called greenshoe option, allows the sale of additional shares to the public if demand is high.
