SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- COVID-19 related hospitalizations continue to sure across California.Without any intervention, Gov. Gavin Newsom said current projections show hospitalizations could increase two to three times the current amount in just one month.“We’ve seen a significant increase, 89 percent increase over the 14-day period of people who have been hospitalized that have tested positive for COVID-19,” Newsom said during a press briefing Monday.Hospitalizations are rising in San Diego County, with local hospitals seeing more COVID-19 cases than they ever have.“We’re seeing about three times the number that we saw just a couple of months ago,” said Dr. Omar Khawaja, the Chief Medical Officer for Palomar Health. “About 25 percent of the positive patients are ending up in the ICU; that’s less than we saw during the first spike.”Khawaja said he expects more hospitalizations in the coming weeks as COVID-19 cases related to Thanksgiving gatherings start to show up.In Escondido, Palomar Medical Center has had room to handle more COVID-19 patients from other hospitals for several months now. A federal medical station is set up inside the hospital with 202 beds that haven’t been used yet.Khawaja said they’re now ready to take on patients from other hospitals across the county that become overwhelmed, but the set-up is not meant for ICU patients.“It could be beds that we would be offload some of the less sick patients from other systems into there so they can handle the sicker patients; we don’t have a solid plan for it yet,” he said. “I don’t think it’ll be activated in the next week; it may be three or four weeks out, so we’re planning for that now.”Khawaja said the details are actively being discussed with other medical officers across the county.“The county and hospital systems are all working very well together, collaborating, communicating on at least a weekly basis. We are actively discussing right now, what would it look like, how would we open it, and what type of patients would go into there,” he said. “Are we worried? Absolutely. Is the spike coming very quickly? Yes, but we do have some capacity and redundancy available now, and we are planning to have even more."Creating more capacity could include scaling back on the number of elective surgeries scheduled, but this time Khawaja said it would look much different than what we saw months ago.“What we’ve done is essentially looked at surgeries and classified them in terms of how long can this be put off to be safe, we all saw that JUST shutting everything down just let to really, just poor patient care, and we don’t want to do that again.” 2646

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Consumer spending in San Diego was down nearly .3 billion between February and April 2020, showing just how badly the COVID-19 pandemic crippled the local economy.Since stay-at-home orders began in March, SANDAG says taxable sales in the region dropped from an average of .3 billion to billion in April.The largest losses in the region were seen at apparel stores (an 83% decrease in sales) and restaurants (down 67%).On the other side, big-box retailers like Costco, Target, and Walmart have fared well, SANDAG says. Grocery stores and pharmacy, though, were actually down 10% in taxable sales. Home improvement sales were also up, likely due to stimulus checks, SANDAG adds."It is interesting to learn that grocery stores and pharmacy sales are actually down by 10%, while home improvement sales have spiked," said SANDAG Chief Economist Ray Major. "We can assume that during the pandemic, people had more time to work on outdoor landscaping, gardens, and other home beautification projects. Plant seed companies also saw increases-- nearly four times their average sales."Consumer spending among online retailers like Amazon increased 35% as well.SANDAG's report estimates that consumer spending will continue to be down through August, though slightly less each month. 1306

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Days after Governor Gavin Newsom signed a new law aimed at child sex abuse, three San Diego women came forward to announce a lawsuit against the Diocese of San Diego. The three women say they were abused by Monsignor Gregory Sheridan as children. Sheridan worked in this diocese for 35 years and is on the diocese’s list of credibly accused abusive priests. This new measure gives survivors of childhood sexual assault, regardless of their age, a three-year “window” to bring a civil lawsuit against any perpetrator and employer or third party that was aware of misconduct that created a risk of childhood sexual assault. The new law also extends the statute of limitations for survivors of childhood sexual assault, giving survivors more time to file civil lawsuits: up to their 40th birthday (previously their 26th birthday) or within five years (previously three years) from the date of discovery of an adult psychological injury caused by the childhood sexual assault. One of the victims told 10News, "It doesn’t mean you don’t love God, doesn’t mean you don’t support your church, it means this priest was a bad apple."10News reached out to the Diocese of San Diego and they sent a statement that reads in part, "There is no crime or sin worse than a priest abusing the young people he is sworn to serve and protect. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cockatiels rescued from unsanitary conditions in a Rancho Bernardo apartment are now available for adoption, the San Diego Humane society announced Tuesday. Humane Society Law Enforcement Officers seized more than 80 birds from one unit Jan. 23. They were flying freely through the home, creating an unhealthy situation, shelter officials said.Veterinarians cleared the birds for adoption. The cockatiels will need socialization and time to adjust to their new homes, according to the Humane Society.
