BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese farmers have begun to reap crops as autumn drew to a close, and the nation is expecting a good harvest this year, China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) said here Tuesday in a statement on its website.The forecast is based upon higher average yields and an estimate that China's planting area for autumn crops rose by 10 million Mu (about 667,000 hectares) from one year ago, said the ministry.According to figures from the MOA, a total of 386 million mu of crops had been harvested by Sept. 27, accounting for 33.3 percent of the total.In a break down of the harvest, 130 million mu of rice, or nearly 50 percent of the total rice planted, had been reaped, while 140 million mu of corn and 60.7 million mu of soybean were harvested, accounting for 28.5 percent and 46.5 percent of the total, respectively, said the MOA.The ministry also arranged for 29 million sets of farm equipment to help with the autumn harvest, it said.China's grain output reached 530.8 million tonnes in 2009, the sixth consecutive year of growth in grain yield.In the wake of a severe drought in China's southwestern regions earlier in the year, summer grain output this year stood at 123.1 million tons, down 0.3 percent from one year ago.

XICHANG, Sichuan, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- China successfully launched the "SinoSat-6" satellite for radio and television live broadcast at 12:14 a.m.Sunday from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China's Sichuan Province.The satellite was carried on the Long March 3B rocket which took the SinoSat-6 into a geostationary transfer orbit 26 minutes after the launch.In the following days, Xi'an Satellite Control Center and Yuanwang tracking ship will manipulate the satellite's position and transfer it to enter the geostationary orbit.SinoSat-6 has a designed lifespan of 15 years and will eventually work at longitude 126.4 degrees east about 35,700 kilometers above the equator, said the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASTC), the satellite's researcher and producer.It will mainly serve for relaying TV and radio live broadcast signals and will greatly improve cultural life for people living in remote and mountainous regions, according to China Satellite Communications Corporation which will operate the satellite.China has launched the first SinoSat series satellite, SinoSat-1, in 1998. The SinoSat-2 was launched in 2006 but malfuctioned for it failed to deploy its solar panels and communication antennae.SinoSat-6 will serve as a substitute for SinoSat-3 which was launched on June 1, 2007, according to the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation.

BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- China and the European Union (EU) are forging a reliable partnership as one's stability, growth and prosperity are in the interests of the other, said an EU envoy on Thursday.Serge Abou, EU Ambassador to China, made the remarks before Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao attends the eighth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM8) and the 13th China-EU summit from Oct. 4 to 6. The ASEM summit, under the theme "Quality of Life: Achieving Greater Well-being and More Dignity for all Citizens," will focus on global finance and economic governance, sustainable development, and social and cultural exchange between Asia and Europe.China, as the second largest economy in the world, plays an important role in the meetings, Abou said, adding that the growth of Chinese economy contributed much to the world, especially amid the financial crisis.Abou described the relationship between China and the EU as "maturing partnership," with trade as "the first taproot" of the ties.The 27-member EU is China's biggest trade partner while China is the EU's second-largest trade partner and most important source of imports. This year, China-EU trade has witnessed remarkable growth and bilateral trade volume exceeded 300 billion U.S. dollars for the first eight months, up 36.2 percent compared with the same period last year.However, Abou was not satisfied with the figures.
