CHICAGO, Ill. -- As states begin to reopen, the new stage in the pandemic means elective surgeries are back on schedule.For 51-year-old mother of two Honaire Murillo, the pandemic delayed much needed spinal surgery.“The shooting pains all the time and you know, I have kids I have to run around. And so, it took about a year and I was so disappointed,” said Murillo.About 24 years ago, the aspiring pro-bodybuilder’s dreams were cut short when she was hit by a motorboat while visiting Puerto Rico on business.More than 20 surgeries later, Murillo needed another one.“The pain started coming back and so I knew I was going to have more surgery,” she said.Last week, doctors at Rush University Medical Center’s Midwest Orthopaedics in Chicago were able to get Murillo into surgery for a first-of-its-kind procedure. It was a minimally invasive spine surgery that utilized augmented reality.“The efficiency this provides because of the accuracy and the visualization of the spine is remarkable,” said Dr. Frank Phillips, the director and minimally invasive spinal surgeon at Rush who performed the procedure.A headset guidance system allowed Dr. Phillips to see Murillo’s spinal anatomy – essentially giving him x-ray vision.“That's exactly what it is,” said Dr. Phillips. “It really is x-ray vision. Except it's not just x-ray vision. You're actually seeing the real spine through the skin.”The CT scanned images are directly projected onto the surgeon’s retina and then superimposed right on top of the patient’s surgical area.“I was just blown away,” said Dr. Phillips. “The minute I put my headset on and looked down at the spine, it was like that wow moment. I was like ‘this is crazy.’”Researchers say the FDA-cleared x-vision system could revolutionize the way surgeons perform complex procedures.“It's so accurate, so precise, the visualization so good, you can do the surgery more efficiently, which obviously translates into less anesthetic time and advantages to the patient,” said Phillips.For Murillo, who eventually went pro 15 years after her accident, this latest groundbreaking surgery has her thinking about another return to competition.“I'm still looking to see if I could comeback one more time. I'm not sure. But, yeah to me it's a dream.”Augmedics, the maker of the technology, says it plans to explore the x-ray vision technology beyond just spinal surgery. 2387

CANTON, Ohio -- An Ohio police department is investigating three separate homicides that happened within 24 hours, including the death of a 1-year-old twin boy who was shot and killed while sleeping.Police in Canton, which is about 60 miles south of Cleveland, say the first homicide happened on Tuesday at around 8:25 p.m. in the 1400 block of Louisiana Court Northwest. A 31-year-old man, identified as Ronald Pleasant, was shot and killed at the scene. A 21-year-old man was shot and taken to a nearby hospital. His injuries are not life-threatening.The second homicide happened in the 100 block of Pulley Place SE at around 10:43 p.m. A 20-year-old man, identified as Brandon Bush, and another 20-year-old man, were both shot. Both were transported to local hospitals by the Canton Fire Department. Bush died from his injuries.The third homicide happened at around 2:28 a.m. Wednesday in the 1600 block of Clarendon Avenue SW. One-year-old twin brothers were shot while sleeping inside a home on Clarendon Avenue. Both were transported by the Canton Fire Department to local hospitals where one of the brothers, identified as Ace Lucas, died. Chicago police announced at a Monday morning news conference that 66 people were shot, 12 of them fatally, between Friday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 11:59 p.m.Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie T. Johnson said it was "no secret that we had an unacceptably violent weekend," at the news conference.In three hours beginning at 1:30 a.m. Sunday, records show, 30 people were shot and two killed in 10 incidents. In all, over the weekend, there were 33 shooting incidents. Fourteen juveniles were shot, and an 11- and 13-year-old were killed."The city of Chicago experienced a violent night," Bureau of Patrol Chief Fred Waller said Sunday afternoon. "Some of these instances were targeted and were related to gang conflicts in those areas."In at least one incident, shooters opened fire into a crowded street party, Waller said.Johnson said the issue stemmed from a small group of people such as repeat gun offenders."This isn't a widespread issue among citizens of this city. This is a small subset of individuals who think they can play by their own rules because they continue to get a slap on the wrist when we arrest them," Johnson said."I'm tired of it. Everybody in this city should be tired of it."Johnson said 46 people were arrested this weekend on gun charges, and 60 guns were seized as a result of ongoing investigations. The Sunday shootings occurred between midnight and 2 p.m., records show.Chicago has struggled with high shooting and murder rates in recent years. Waller said shootings are down 30 percent from 2017, and murders are down 25 percent.June marked 15 straight months of fewer killings and shootings, police said. CAMPO (CNS) - One person was killed today in a traffic crash involving an overturned semi-truck on State Route 94, the CHP said.The fatal crash happened at 12:06 p.m. Saturday when a semi-truck was reported on its side in the right shoulder of SR-94 west of Buckman Springs Road with no other vehicles involved, according to a California Highway Patrol incident log.Caltrans San Diego said all lanes of eastbound and westbound SR-94 were blocked and asked travelers to use an alternate route. The CHP said the freeway would probably be closed for a couple of hours while investigators look into the cause of the crash.No further information was available. 663

In 2020, though, those big winnings took a dramatic turn."For us, we were hit pretty hard. We offer video lottery at bars and restaurants throughout the state and by far that’s our highest revenue product and literally overnight when bars and restaurants shut down, that revenue line went to zero," said Matt Shelby with Oregon Lottery. Shelby says they were shut down for more than a month. Oregon normally brings in million a week on video lottery games and it goes to some crucial state programs."Things like schools, parks, natural resources, watershed development, most recently veterans' services and then we also fund problem gambling and treatment across the state. When our revenue goes down, we feel it first because we operate like any other business, but those state programs that rely on our dollars will feel that crunch in the next budget cycle," said Shelby.In Vermont, government-mandated shut downs prompted lottery ticket sales to plummet by about 30 percent. All of that money goes to fund education. Gary Kessler, the Deputy Commissioner of Liquor and Lottery for the State of Vermont, says they're now encouraging people to buy lottery tickets in advance to help boost sales. Kessler said, "they could buy them out 20 draws in advance. So, they could be safe and stay in the game at the same time. That was really our message that we tried to get out to our players and players really did respond. We saw quite an increase in our subscription services, which is where you can buy for six months or for an entire year and know that those numbers are set."While most lottery departments have been established for decades, that's not the case in Mississippi. "We hadn't been up and running for a year. We’re still in the building process and we have layers to complete. When COVID-19 hit we had about half of a business continuity plan and it hadn’t been completed," said Mississippi Lottery President Tom Shaheen. While the Mississippi Lottery saw an initial drop in sales, in April things started to pick back up. Mississippi Lottery was still able to contribute more than million to projects in its first seven months of operation."It helps fund roads, bridges and education, which was set by the legislature in the Lottery Act and approved by the Governor," said Shaheen. And while lottery officials across the country understand the current economy may keep some from buying lottery tickets, they hope the programs the lotteries fund aren't impacted too severely.
